Book excerpt: Epoxy-resin systems have been formulated, sold, and used for a wide variety of applications because of their strength, adhesion, stability at high temperatures, resistance to chemical attack, abrasion resistance, and electrical characteristics. This report reviews the available literature and manufacturers' publications to determine the potential uses of epoxy resins on Civil Works projects. These possible uses fall into three general categories: adhesives, fillers, and coatings. The particular epoxy-resin system to be employed in a given application should be carefully selected to have the most appropriate characteristics as related to requirements of application, properties after curing, and lowest cost. Book excerpt: This report includes a summary of the uses and types of applications, the procedures involved, and the performance of epoxy resins used for civil works projects since 1959; and a guide for recommended practice for use of epoxy compounds with concrete. A TOTAL OF 80 APPLICATIONS OF EPOXY RESINS ARE DISCUSSED, WITH THE TYPE AND NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS AS FOLLOWS: bonding fresh to hardened concrete, 33; patching and filling and repairing cracks, 25; applying protective coating, waterproofing, and sealing joints, 8; bonding metal to hardened concrete, 10; applying coatings for erosion resistance, 3; and bonding hardened concrete to hardened concrete, 1. The performance of 15 of these 80 applications of epoxy resins was rated as unsatisfactory or poor. Causes for the unsatisfactory performance are attributed to wet or damp substrates, insufficient removal of unsound material around area being bonded or patched, weakened surface conditions caused by bushhammering, and softening of cured epoxy when immersed in water. It is essential that proper techniques of mixing the epoxy components, of surface preparation, and of application, and properly selected epoxy formulation be used for optimum performance.
