Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Episodes of Anglo-Indian History It is a frequent complaint that the English public know little of India. It is certainly curious that, until within the last few years, the study of Indian history formed no part of the ordinary curriculum of our schools; though it might have been supposed that a record so full of brilliant deeds would have had a strong and special attraction for our English youth. One reason, however, for this general indifference or ignorance may have been the want of popular books upon the subject, calculated to engage the attention of the ordinary reader. Down to quite a recent date, almost the only compositions of this kind were Lord Macaulay's picturesque essays on Clive and Warren Hastings. And though much, it is true, has recently been done in this direction, there still remains room, if I mistake not, for a compilation such as the present, in which the leading facts of Anglo-Indian history are presented without unnecessary detail. In truth, it has been my desire to tell my story with the utmost simplicity, believing that its deep, intrinsic interest cannot fail to secure the reader's attention. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reginald Maher's 'These Are the Anglo Indians' is the second book in the Anglo Indian Heritage series. The author tells the little known story of Anglo Indian history. How this small community adapted, in the face of difficulties and survived and helped shape the destiny of the British in India. The Portuguese came to India just over 500 years ago. The Dutch, French and the British soon followed, attracted by the famed riches of India, Europeans married local people. These unions resulted in the birth of a new community which later came to be known as Anglo-Indians. Reginald Maher narrates this 500 year old history and brings the achievements of a number of Anglo Indians and their significant contributions to Indian society. This remarkable story of a small community is a story of courage and resilience in the face of adversity. The books are called the Anglo Indian Heritage books as they chronicle the rich and colorful history of the Anglo Indian Community. This small community has had outstanding achievements at every level of society for hundreds of years, but that record of achievement has been hidden, passed over or co-opted as British and Indian History. The Heritage Books are an attempt to fairly represent the history of the community by works by Anglo Indians themselves. These books are a record of the history of the community and in the process celebrate the forgotten Heroes of the Community and their achievements. The Other books in the series are: (1) Britain's Betrayal in India: The Story of the Anglo Indian Community by Frank Anthony (2) Hostages to India: The Life story of The Anglo Indian Race by Herbert Alick Stark (3) Cimmerii? Or Eurasians and Their Future by CedricDover.

Book Race and Power in British India

Download or read book Race and Power in British India written by Valerie Anderson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-06-09 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the nineteenth century the British had ruled India for over a hundred years, and had consolidated their power over the sub-continent. Until 1858, when Queen Victoria assumed sovereignty following the Indian Rebellion, the country was run by the East India Company - by this time a hybrid of state and commercial enterprises and eloquently and fiercely attacked as intrinsically immoral and dangerous by Edmund Burke in the late 1700s. Seeking to go beyond the statutes and ceremony, and show the reality of the interactions between rulers and ruled on a local level, this book looks at one of the most interesting phenomena of British India - the 'Eurasians'. The adventurers of the early years of Indian occupation arrived alone, and in taking 'native' mistresses and wives, created a race of administrators who were 'others' to both the native population and the British ruling class. These Anglo-Indian people existed in the zone between the colonizer and the colonized, and their history provides a wonderfully rich source for understanding Indian social history, race and colonial hegemony.

Book Explore Anglo Indian History

Download or read book Explore Anglo Indian History written by Alejandro Schmerer and published by . This book was released on 2021-07-06 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is appealing on three levels. It is a compelling string of short stories recounting major events in three generations of an Anglo Indian family, culminating with little Eva. From a historical/cultural perspective, you will learn a great deal about how the struggles in India at this time looked through the eyes of the everyday man. This biographical story spans 3 generations of women in an Anglo-Indian family and draws upon some of the noteworthy historical events in India at the time. We see a young girl coming of age, and her mother and grandmothers facing the trials of the Great Depression. With this series of vignettes, we see some of the obstacles the average middle-class Anglo-Indian family faced and their attempt at embracing the new and changing India - where there was a quest for the country's Independence and the eventual exodus of Anglo-Indians in the 1940s and 1950s.

Book excerpt: This collective literary effort has taken the stories of 16 ‘everyday’ women from India – a housemaid, a lawyer, a divorcee, a doctor battling Covid-19, a single mother… It covers their most intimate stories in easy-to-read free verse. It is time the voice of the common Indian woman got heard - with all the unique challenges she faces living in this cultural ecosystem, with all its attendant heartaches and joys, highs and lows. This is the voice of the unheard women of India. And they are speaking out bravely, without fear of shame or social ostracisation. They want to inspire other women – just ordinary, everyday women like themselves – to start speaking their truth by sharing their (often painful) histories and lifting the veil on the unspoken. This anthology covers sexuality, societal judgement, divorce, education systems for women, domestic slavery, parental control and interference, in-laws and misogyny... It comprises powerful stories that tell of the hidden powerhouse that drives this nation. One that is finally breaking free of the chains that have kept them bound for as far back as any of us can remember. These are the stories of the battles and triumphs of every Indian woman and this book is a salute to their everyday courage and resilience.
