Book excerpt: Origen has been always studied as a theologian and too much credit has been given to Eusebius’ implausible hagiography of him. This book explores who Origen really was, by pondering into his philosophical background, which determines his theological exposition implicitly, yet decisively. For this background to come to light, it took a ground-breaking exposition of Anaxagoras’ philosophy and its legacy to Classical and Late Antiquity (Plato, Aristotle, Stoics, Origen, Neoplatonism), assessing critically Aristotle’s distorted representation of Anaxagoras. Origen, formerly a Greek philosopher of note, whom Proclus styled an anti-Platonist, is placed in the history of philosophy for the first time. By drawing on his Anaxagorean background, and being the first to revive the Anaxagorean Theory of Logoi, he paved the way to Nicaea. He was an anti-Platonist because he was an Anaxagorean philosopher with far-reaching influence, also on Neoplatonists such as Porphyry. His theology made an impact not only on the Cappadocians, but also on later Christian authors. His theory of the soul, now expounded in the light of his philosophical background, turns out more orthodox than that of some Christian stars of the Byzantine imperial orthodoxy.

Book excerpt: The Greek grammarian Epaphroditus, trained in Alexandria and prominent as a teacher in Rome of the Neronian-Flavian era, continued the tradition of Hellenistic scholarship in his study of Homer, the Hesiodic Shield of Herakles, and the Aitia of Kallimachos as well as in his treatise on etymology and in the compilation of a glossary of unfamiliar words. Numerous fragments from these works have been preserved in the Ethnika of the sixth-century grammarian Stephanos of Byzantium, the scholia on Homer and other authors, and, notably, in Byzantine etymological lexica, not all of which are fully accessible in print. The present edition presents a critical text of the fragments within the broader context in which they have been transmitted. Each text is supplied with a critical apparatus and a list of the more important parallels. To make the edition more easily accessible to non-specialists an English translation has been given not only of the fragments but also of longer texts quoted in the notes, features which should be of use to specialists as well. After each fragment a short commentary summarizes the results. An extensive introduction presents the life, works, and scholarship of Epaphroditus and explains the reasons for the classification of the fragments. A concordance to the edition of Lünzner (1866), a full bibliography, and indices facilitate the use of the work. The aim of the edition has not only been to set the grammarian in his rightful place in the history of scholarship but to encourage further work in this neglected field by demonstrating its intrinsic interest and by explaining methods and technical terms which are often taken for granted in specialist works. This partly unexpected revival is very promising and it continues to enhance and modify both our knowledge of ancient scholarship and the way in which we are accustomed to discuss these texts and tackle the editorial and exegetical challenges they pose. This volume deals with some pivotal aspects of this topic, being the outcome of a three-year project funded by the Italian Ministry for Education, University and Research (MIUR) on specific aspects of the critical re-appraisal of Homer, Hesiod, Pindar, and Aeschylus in Greek culture throughout antiquity and the Middle Ages. It tackles issues such as the material form of the transmission of the exegesis from papyri to codices, the examination of hitherto unexplored branches of the manuscript evidence, the discussion of some important scholia, and the role played by the indirect tradition and the assimilation of the exegetical heritage in grammatical and lexicographical works. Some strands of the ancient and medieval scholarship are here re-evaluated afresh by adopting an interdisciplinary methodology which blends modern editorial techniques developed for ‘problematic’ or ‘non-authorial’ medieval texts with current trends in the history of philology and literary criticism. In their diversity of subject matter and approach the papers collected in the volume give intended readers an excellent overview of the topics of the project.

The four sections illustrate the variety of approaches of the same object, which for Greek writers was much more than a technical way of studying language. (1) “Philosophical issues” addresses the theory of etymology and its explanatory power, especially in Plato and in Neoplatonism. (2) “Linguistic issues” discusses various etymologizing techniques and the status of etymology, which was criticized and openly rejected by some authors. (3) “Poetical practices of etymology” investigates the ubiquitous presence of etymological reflections in learned poetry, whatever the genre, didactic, aetiological or epic. (4) “Etymology and word-plays” addresses the vexed question of the limit between a mere pun and a real etymological explanation, which is more than once difficult to establish. The wide range of genres and authors and the interplay between theoretical reflection and applied practice shows clearly the importance of etymology in Greek thought.

New critical editions of the most extensive surviving ancient and medieval texts on Greek enclitics, together with translations into English, lay the foundations for an improved understanding of thought on Greek enclitics in those periods. Stephanie Roussou and Philomen Probert then draw out the main doctrines and the conceptual apparatus and metaphors that were used to think and talk about enclitic accents, consider the antiquity of these ideas within the Greek grammatical tradition, and make use of both ancient and medieval sources to explore two much-debated questions about the facts of the language itself. Firstly, the Greek sources turn out to shed new light first of all on the circumstances under which enclitic ἐsτί was used and the circumstances under which non-enclitic ἔsτι appeared. Secondly, ancient and medieval evidence from several directions comes together in a way that has gone unnoticed until now, and suggests a new answer to the question of how sequences of consecutive enclitics were accented in antiquity.

A further group of papyri of Iliad and related Homeric texts, including a paraphrase of Iliad I (its texts transmitted verbatim by at least two other papyri), scholia minora to Iliad I, and commentaries on Odyssey III and XV with scholarly credentials. Documentary texts include declarations of livestock, loans, leases, and other contracts. Finally it records publication of a group of drawings that appeared outside the series but assigns Oxyrhynchus publication numbers to them for the first time. Images of the drawings were prepared for and will be published in the volume Oxyrhynchus A City and its Texts (GRM 93) and Egyptian Archaeology 22.
