Book excerpt: Pride and Prejudice goes Hollywood in this winning romantic comedy inspired by Jane Austen’s classic. In her teen fiction debut, the author of Knitting Under the Influence goes back to high school for a tale of sisters, misinformation, and star-crossed love. Will Elise’s love life be an epic win or an epic fail? At Coral Tree Prep in Los Angeles, who your parents are can make or break you. Case in point: As the son of Hollywood royalty, Derek Edwards is pretty much prince of the school—not that he deigns to acknowledge many of his loyal subjects. As the daughter of the new principal, Elise Benton isn’t exactly on everyone’s must-sit-next-to-at-lunch list. When Elise’s beautiful sister catches the eye of the prince’s best friend, Elise gets to spend a lot of time with Derek, making her the envy of every girl on campus. Except she refuses to fall for any of his rare smiles and instead warms up to his enemy, the surprisingly charming social outcast Webster Grant. But in this hilarious tale of fitting in and flirting, not all snubs are undeserved, not all celebrity brats are bratty, and pride and prejudice can get in the way of true love for only so long.

Book The QB

    Book Details:
  • Author : Bruce Feldman
  • Publisher : Crown
  • Release : 2015-11-03
  • ISBN : 0553418475
  • Pages : 322 pages

Download or read book The QB written by Bruce Feldman and published by Crown. This book was released on 2015-11-03 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With unparalleled access to the recruits, coaches, and gurus shaping football’s future, Bruce Feldman has written a modern-day tale about the making of the next superstars in the game’s most important position: the quarterback. In the world of modern football, with NFL teams worth more than a billion dollars, no position defines a franchise like the quarterback. The QB is the story of a year in the making of those star players, and of the most significant year in QB development in sport’s history… with the meteoric rise of various quarterback gurus finally coming to light. George Whitfield, profiled in the New Yorker and called the “Quarterback Whisperer,” gets a regular spot on ESPN’s College GameDay, Trent Dilfer, former Super Bowl quarterback, starts his own qb business, Steve Clarkson, another qb maker, gets profiled on 60 minutes, among many others. It is also the year 5’10” Russell Wilson wins the Super Bowl and for the first time in over 60 years a sub-6-foot QB, Johnny Manziel, gets drafted in the first round, forcing NFL power brokers to re-examine how they look at the position—and the game. To tell the story of all that goes on to create the perfect quarterback, bestselling author Bruce Feldman gained unique access to "Johnny Football" (that's Johnny Manziel), George Whitfield and many other players in what has become a specialized and high-stakes business. In the past decade the boom of the private quarterback-coach business, with its pageant-world-for-boys vibe, has changed the position and the game. The QB tells the story of the interlocking paths of the most fascinating characters involved in this secretive world, examining how advanced analysis has taken root in football. Manziel’s portrait is the most intimate look at him yet, detailing all his talents and antics. His guru is a man who has come to be known for making QBs--George Whitfield, unparalleled in the business. And then there is Trent Dilfer, the quarterback who never could get to the superstar level, despite winning the Super Bowl. He is the Salieri to Manziel's Mozart. There is the computer/brain analysis company trying to quantify how playmakers think, the biomechanics expert who saved Drew Brees’s career, and many more fascinating behind-the-scenes looks into this world. Never before has the game so relied on the development of the quarterback. In The QB, the stories of these men illustrate how high the stakes of the quarterback’s game really are, taking readers on a compelling journey into the heart of America's beloved game.

Well Eric Vale's got all three. Once I used to be just plain old boring Eric Vale. And that was totally fine by me. I didn't want a nickname. But then one day, I got one anyway. And it ended up being way worse than Choo-Choo or Snotty or King Pong or even Booger Brain. Yep, no doubt about it. My nickname was an epic fail! We all have moments in life we would like to forget. But as much as he'd like to erase it from the history books, Eric Vale isn't likely to forget the day his name became an Epic Fail. Neither, it seems, is the fifth grade class at Moreton Hill Primary School. This is the story of one of those awkward and seemingly unforgettable events that define our childhood -- and one boy's dogged determination to turn an Epic Fail into a Mega-Awesome Epic Win.

Book Super Performing At Work and At Home

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A book about how to become a super performer in everything you do—and how to find the real reason for wanting to super perform How do you handle a “no-win” situation? According to world-renowned cardiothoracic surgeon Robert J. Cerfolio—“the Michael Jordan of lung surgery”—there’s often no such thing. Sharing his own remarkable feats as a collegiate first-team academic all-American baseball player, his rise from a surgical resident at the Mayo Clinic to the recognized world authority in chest and robotic thoracic surgery, and anecdotes from his long career as a Little League coach and father, Cerfolio shows you how to think like a super performer in everything you do. Revealing the techniques, lessons, and strategies he himself learned through playing sports, he teaches you to attain what he calls “the athleticism of life”: the practice that elevates the mind and body of the good to the great and makes a star performer into a super performer. Yet, as Dr. Cerfolio learns when his wife tests positive for breast cancer, this isn’t the entire story—and what ultimately defines us is how well we can meet our obligations when placed under the most crushing pressure. In this provocative memoir/guidebook, Cerfolio sets you on your path to super performing—but teaches you, through his story, that your path is not complete without an honorable cause to steer toward and give your all.

  • Author : Paul A Himes
  • Publisher : Energion Publications
  • Release : 2017-08-28
  • ISBN : 1631996037
  • Pages : 153 pages

Download or read book Where Is Your Allegiance written by Paul A Himes and published by Energion Publications. This book was released on 2017-08-28 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lay persons in the church might be forgiven for imagining that the book of Revelation cannot be understood. There are many different interpretive schemes proposed, and hundreds of variations within those schemes. But the reader who is willing to spend the time will find real treasures in the study of this book, and Paul Himes has provided an excellent guide to some of the most important passages, as he looks at the messages to the seven churches, and even more importantly at the One who is sending those messages, based on the vision in the first chapter and the ways in which the churches are addressed. Dr. Himes provides key background information and then takes a serious look at the details of the text, but he does so in a way that is clear and that points the reader to ways of approaching the text more seriously on his or her own. For those who want to follow the trail further, the footnotes are extensive. Since, as the author tells us on page 5, “... one cannot begin to grapple with the eschatology of Revelation until one has submitted to the Christology of Revelation” this book provides an excellent point of entry for someone who wants to take a new and refreshing look at this important book. Here one can study the Christ of revelation (Christology), the church He ordained (ecclesiology), and go from there to the purpose and destination He has for that church (eschatology).

Book SuperBetter

  • Author : Jane McGonigal
  • Publisher : Penguin
  • Release : 2015-09-15
  • ISBN : 0698185501
  • Pages : 274 pages

Download or read book SuperBetter written by Jane McGonigal and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2015-09-15 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An innovative guide to living gamefully, based on the program that has already helped nearly half a million people achieve remarkable personal growth In 2009, internationally renowned game designer Jane McGonigal suffered a severe concussion. Unable to think clearly or work or even get out of bed, she became anxious and depressed, even suicidal. But rather than let herself sink further, she decided to get better by doing what she does best: she turned her recovery process into a resilience-building game. What started as a simple motivational exercise quickly became a set of rules for “post-traumatic growth” that she shared on her blog. These rules led to a digital game and a major research study with the National Institutes of Health. Today nearly half a million people have played SuperBetter to get stronger, happier, and healthier. But the life-changing ideas behind SuperBetter are much bigger than just one game. In this book, McGonigal reveals a decade’s worth of scientific research into the ways all games—including videogames, sports, and puzzles—change how we respond to stress, challenge, and pain. She explains how we can cultivate new powers of recovery and resilience in everyday life simply by adopting a more “gameful” mind-set. Being gameful means bringing the same psychological strengths we naturally display when we play games—such as optimism, creativity, courage, and determination—to real-world goals. Drawing on hundreds of studies, McGonigal shows that getting superbetter is as simple as tapping into the three core psychological strengths that games help you build: • Your ability to control your attention, and therefore your thoughts and feelings • Your power to turn anyone into a potential ally, and to strengthen your existing relationships • Your natural capacity to motivate yourself and super-charge your heroic qualities, like willpower, compassion, and determination SuperBetter contains nearly 100 playful challenges anyone can undertake in order to build these gameful strengths. It includes stories and data from people who have used the SuperBetter method to get stronger in the face of illness, injury, and other major setbacks, as well as to achieve goals like losing weight, running a marathon, and finding a new job. As inspiring as it is down to earth, and grounded in rigorous research, SuperBetter is a proven game plan for a better life. You’ll never say that something is “just a game” again.

Book excerpt: A smooth-talking ex-sergeant, accustomed to an easygoing peacetime military, unexpectedly rejoins the fleet and finds soldiers preparing for the strangest thing—war. The two hundred years’ (and counting) peace is a time of tranquility that hasn’t been seen since...well, never. Mankind in the Galactic Age had finally conquered war, so what was left for the military to do but drink and barbecue? That’s the kind of military that Sergeant R. Wilson Rogers lived in before he left the fleet to become a smuggler. But it turns out that smuggling is hard. Like getting-arrested-for-dealing-with-pirates-and-forced-back-into-service kind of hard. It doesn’t seem so bad—the military was a perpetual tiki party anyway—but when Rogers returns after only a year away, something has changed. These are soldiers—actual soldiers doing actual soldier things like preparing for a war that Rogers is sure doesn’t exist. Rogers vows to put a stop to all this nonsense—even if it means doing actual work. With an experienced ear for military double-speak, Zieja has created a remarkable and sarcastic adventure.
