Book excerpt: Human beings are embedded in a set of social relations. A social network is one way of conceiving that set of relations in terms of a number of persons connected to one another by varying degrees of relatedness. In the early Jesus group documents featuring Paul and coworkers, it takes little effort to envision the apostle's collection of friends and friends of friends that is the Pauline network. The persons who constituted that network are the focus of this set of brief books. For Christians of the Western tradition, these persons are significant ancestors in faith. While each of them is worth knowing by themselves, it is largely because of their standing within that web of social relations woven about and around Paul that they are of lasting interest. Through this series we hope to come to know those persons in ways befitting their first-century Mediterranean culture. Epaphras belonged to Paul's network of friends. Because Epaphras is mentioned only three times in the Second Testament, in the letters to Philemon and the Colossians, it is unsurprising that he is passed over by biblical scholars more interested in Paul's better-known companions. Michael Trainor points out, however, that even though Epaphras is mentioned infrequently, Colossians portrays him as an authentic interpreter of Paul and an important teacher. After all, by the time the letter to the Colossians was written, Paul was dead. Epaphras ensures for that community and the next generation of Christians the continuity, as well as the freshness and vitality, of Paul's teaching. Thus Epaphras has great relevance for Christians today who seek ways to engage the contemporary world in light of their discipleship.

The name of the slave, Onesimus, means useful. Paul notes that Onesimus was useful to him and would be useful to his Lord. Therein lies a story, an almost unbelievable story.

Alongside theoretical and practical development of Gadamer s philosophy, the book deals with the following New Testament topics: assumptions concerning the background story of the letter to Philemon, the foundation of the Colossian church and the route of Paul s third missionary journey, rhetorical strategy in the presentation of Paul and Barnabas s first missionary journey, Paul s interaction with Egyptian religion in Romans, and the relation of the letter of James to Paul s theology and career.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colossians and Philemon have traditionally been overshadowed by other New Testament texts thought to express Pauline theology more clearly. In this notable commentary, however, Marianne Meye Thompson shows how these two epistles provide a unique formulation of the gospel in terms of creation and reconciliation rather than justification by faith. In Colossians she finds an overarching narrative of the Bible's grand creation-redemption story and an important emphasis on the relationship between creation and Christology, while her exploration of Philemon casts brighter light on the significance of Paul's familial metaphors for the church and the meaning of new humanity in Christ. Throughout her work on these two epistles, Thompson continually connects her insights to theological concerns, making this volume an excellent addition to the Two Horizons series.

Book Paul and His Team

  • Author : Ryan Lokkesmoe
  • Publisher : Moody Publishers

Download or read book Paul and His Team written by Ryan Lokkesmoe and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What can we learn about leadership and influence from Paul? Most Christians know something of the apostle Paul’s life and ministry, but what about the incredible team of influencers he assembled and mobilized? Who were they, and how did Paul lead this team to accomplish God’s purposes? Even more, what can we learn from their successes and failures, and how can we imitate their qualities? These are the questions that inspired Ryan Lokkesmoe, PhD, to write Paul and His Team. Like a church-ministry version of Team of Rivals, it reveals important principles about leadership and influence by showing how this early ministry team: Adapted to cultural, doctrinal, and interpersonal challenges Found common ground with their audiences Led baby believers toward maturity Stayed united despite differing opinions Equipped others for the work of the ministry Conducted their lives with self-discipline Built and maintained strategic partnerships Navigated sensitive cross-cultural situations Persisted through difficulty, frustration, and fractured relationships Persevered when ministry was discouraging Developed leaders to replace them Whether you are in a position of leadership or are simply a passionate follower of Christ, you are an influencer that God is using to build His church. And while Paul and His Team certainly reveals a lot about Paul's character as a leader, it also highlights both prominent and obscure members of his team to offer a textured portrait of the early church’s influence in spreading the gospel. Let’s learn from the men and women God used to build the church, letting them shape our leadership and influence as we continue their work. Includes group discussion questions at the end of each chapter, making this book ideal for a church-staff or small group study.
