Book excerpt: In this study of Hegel's philosophy, Brinkmann undertakes to defend Hegel's claim to objective knowledge by bringing out the transcendental strategy underlying Hegel's argument in the Phenomenology of Spirit and the Logic. Hegel's metaphysical commitments are shown to become moot through this transcendental reading. Starting with a survey of current debates about the possibility of objective knowledge, the book next turns to the original formulation of the transcendental argument in favor of a priori knowledge in Kant's First Critique. Through a close reading of Kant's Transcendental Deduction and Hegel's critique of it, Brinkmann tries to show that Hegel develops an immanent critique of Kant's position that informs his reformulation of the transcendental project in the Introduction to the Phenomenology of Spirit and the formulation of the position of 'objective thought' in the Science of Logic and the Encyclopedia of the Philosophical Sciences. Brinkmann takes the reader through the strategic junctures of the argument of the Phenomenology that establishes the position of objective thinking with which the Logic begins. A critical examination of the Introduction to the Lectures on the History of Philosophy shows that Hegel's metaphysical doctrine of the self-externalization of spirit need not compromise the ontological project of the Logic and thus does not burden the position of objective thought with pre-critical metaphysical claims. Brinkmann's book is a remarkable achievement. He has given us what may be the definitive version of the transcendental, categorial interpretation of Hegel. Book excerpt: Im Wintersemester 1816/17 hat Hegel in Heidelberg über Enzyklopädie der philosophischen Wissenschaften vorgetragen und bald darauf - im Juni 1817 - einen Grundriß seines Systems unter diesem Namen veröffentlicht. Hegels Schüler und Biograph Karl Rosenkranz schreibt hierüber: »Diese erste Ausgabe der Enzyklopädie enthält noch ganz den schöpferischen Hauch der ersten Produktion. Die späteren Ausgaben sind in der Ausführung des Einzelnen, namentlich aber in polemischen und apologetischen Anmerkungen, viel ausführlicher geworden; um aber Hegels System in seiner konzentrierten Totalität zu haben, wie es mit der ganzen Kraft des primitiven Erscheinens hervortrat, wird man immer auf diese erste Ausgabe zurückkommen und sie daher auch wieder abdrucken müssen.« Trotz dieses Hinweises ist diese erste Fassung der Enzyklopädie bislang nur durch einen von Hermann Glockner veranlassten reprographischen Nachdruck zugänglich geworden; im vorliegenden Band wird sie erstmals textkritisch ediert und durch einen Editorischen Bericht und Anmerkungen erschlossen. Von der Erstausgabe hat sich Hegel Handexemplare mit eingelegten Blättern binden lassen und diese Blätter überreich mit Notizen versehen. Der Band zur Philosophie des Geistes hat sich erhalten: Die Notizen werden hier kritisch ediert, und der edierte Text wird mit Faksimiles der Manuskriptseiten kontrastiert, so dass der Leser ein anschauliches Bild der oft sehr komplizierten Anordnung dieser Notizen zueinander gewinnen kann. Als weitere Beilagen enthält der Band fragmentarische Manuskripte Hegels zu seinen Vorlesungen über Logik und Metaphysik, über Naturphilosophie sowie über Anthropologie und Psychologie, an denen man seine fortschreitende Ausarbeitung dieser Disziplinen verfolgen kann, ferner Diktate Hegels zur Enzyklopädie aus dem Sommersemester 1818. Nunmehr liegen alle drei Auflagen der Enzyklopädie in kritischer Edition vor (GW 13, 19 und 20). Um die Benutzung zu erleichtern, enthält GW 13 eine Konkordanz, die die Paragraphen der ersten Ausgabe denen der zweiten zuordnet.

Moral philosophy aspires to understand the fact that human actions, unlike the actions of the other animals, can be morally good or bad, right or wrong. Few moral philosophers, however, have exploited the idea that actions might be morally good or bad in virtue of being good or bad of their kind - good or bad as actions. Just as we need to know that it is the function of the heart to pump blood to know that a good heart is one that pumps blood successfully, so we need to know what the function of an action is in order to know what counts as a good or bad action. Drawing on the work of Plato, Aristotle, and Kant, Korsgaard proposes that the function of an action is to constitute the agency and therefore the identity of the person who does it. As rational beings, we are aware of, and therefore in control of, the principles that govern our actions. A good action is one that constitutes its agent as the autonomous and efficacious cause of her own movements. These properties correspond, respectively, to Kant's two imperatives of practical reason. Conformity to the categorical imperative renders us autonomous, and conformity to the hypothetical imperative renders us efficacious. And in determining what effects we will have in the world, we are at the same time determining our own identities. Korsgaard develops a theory of action and of interaction, and of the form interaction must take if we are to have the integrity that, she argues, is essential for agency. On the basis of that theory, she argues that only morally good action can serve the function of action, which is self-constitution.
