Book Environmental Management of River Basin Ecosystems

Download or read book Environmental Management of River Basin Ecosystems written by Mu. Ramkumar and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-02-18 with total page 753 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a unique collection of inter- and multidisciplinary studies on river systems. Rivers have been the prime source of sustenance since the advent of civilization and river systems often form the basis for agriculture, transport, water, and land for domestic, commercial, and industrial activities, fostering economic prosperity. A river basin is a basic geographical and climatological unit within which the vagaries of natural processes act and manifest themselves at different spatio-temporal scales. Even if compared side-by-side, no two river basins respond to natural processes in the same way and thus, it has long been recognized that each river basin is unique. Hence, any developmental activity or conservation effort has to be designed and implemented to match each unique river basin. With the burgeoning population and increasing dependency on natural resources, understanding and maintaining river systems has become increasingly important. This book provides a varied reference work on and unprecedented guidelines for conducting and implementing research on river basins, and for managing their ecological development.

Book Murray Darling Basin Australia

Download or read book Murray Darling Basin Australia written by Barry Hart and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2020-10-23 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Murray-Darling Basin, Australia: Its Future Management is a much-needed text for water resources managers, water, catchment, estuarine and coastal scientists, and aquatic ecologists. The book first provides a summary of the Murray-Darling River system: its hydrology, water-related ecological assets, land uses (particularly irrigation), and its rural and regional communities; and management within the Basin, including catchments and natural resources, water resources, irrigation, environment, and monitoring and evaluation. Additionally, the recent major water reforms in the Basin are discussed, with a focus particularly on the development and implementation of the Basin Plan. Murray-Darling Basin, Australia: Its Future Management then provides an analysis of the next set of policy and institutional reforms (environmental, social, cultural and economic) needed to ensure the Basin is managed as an integrated system (including its water resources, catchment and estuary) capable of adapting to future changes. Six major challenges facing the Basin are identified and discussed, particularly within the context of predicted changes to the climate leading to an increased frequency of drought and a hotter and dryer future. Finally, a 'road map' or 'blueprint' to achieve more integrated management of the Basin is provided, together with some 'key lessons' of relevance to others involved in the management of multijurisdictional river Basins. - Provides a consolidated account of the Murray-Darling Basin system; an area of global relevance to those interested in rebalancing river systems where the water resources have been over allocated - Offers a detailed analysis of the current system and its management, with a focus on water and ecosystem management - Discusses a number of key challenges, particularly those related to climate change, facing future reforms to the Murray-Darling Basin Plan - Provides a blueprint for changes needed to ensure the Basin is managed as an integrated whole (from catchment to coast)

Book Riversymposium 2001

Download or read book Riversymposium 2001 written by P. Greenfield and published by IWA Publishing (International Water Assoc). This book was released on 2002 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brisbane?s annual Riversymposium plays a unique role, providing an exchange and synthesis of river management knowledge and practice. In presenting a holistic, integrated approach to the subject it aims to showcase the world's best practice in river management and so act as a forum for learning and exchange of ideas for river managers, to celebrate achievements in river management, giving full value to social and ecological aspects of rivers, and to increase public attention to issues of river management. In keeping with its goal of addressing all aspects of river management, the 2001 Riversymposium featured several key topics and river management case studies. From the wide-ranging and lively programme 31 articles have been selected for these proceedings. Following the keynote address there are sections covering: Human Impacts on River Health; Rivers as Urban Landscapes - the Renaissance of the Waterfront; The Economics of River Management; Sustainable River Management; Community Involvement in River Management; Environmental Flows. With contributions from around the world, the Riversymposium proceedings present a holistic view of river management, offering scientists, politicians, practitioners, industry and community groups a key resource on current issues relating to the management of rivers.

Book Floodplain Wetland Biota in the Murray Darling Basin

Download or read book Floodplain Wetland Biota in the Murray Darling Basin written by Kerrylee Rogers and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2010-11-15 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Floodplain wetlands of the Murray-Darling Basin provide critical habitat for numerous species of flora and fauna, yet the ecology of these wetlands is threatened by a range of environmental issues. This book addresses the urgent need for an improved ecohydrological understanding of the biota of Australian freshwater wetlands. It synthesises key water and habitat requirements for 35 species of plants, 48 species of waterbirds, 17 native and four introduced species of fish, 15 species of frogs, and 16 species of crustaceans and molluscs found in floodplain wetlands of the Murray-Darling Basin. Each species profile includes: the influence of water regimes on the survival, health and condition of the species; key stimuli for reproduction and germination; habitat and dietary preferences; as well as major knowledge gaps for the species. Floodplain Wetland Biota in the Murray-Darling Basin also provides an overview of the likely impacts of hydrological change on wetland ecosystems and biota, in the context of climate change and variability, with implications for environmental management. This important book provides an essential baseline for further education, scientific research and management of floodplain wetland biota in the Murray-Darling Basin.

Book The Purari tropical environment of a high rainfall river basin

Download or read book The Purari tropical environment of a high rainfall river basin written by T. Petr and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the major river systems of our country, the Purari River, finds its outlet to the sea in the Gulf of Papua on the southern coast of Papua New Guinea. All highlands provinces contribute to this mighty river: the Erave of the Southern Highlands Province joins with the Kaugel and Wahgi Rivers (Western High lands), the Tua River (Simbu), and Asaro and Aure Rivers of the Eastern High lands Province to make the Purari the third largest river in P. N. G. Unlike its rivals, the Fly and the Sepik, the distance between its escape from the mountains and its entrance to the sea is short. After winding its way mostly through deep gorges flanked by high mountains, the river leaves the foothills of the southern slopes of the central cordillera barely eighty kilometers from the sea. The energy potential of such a river is enormous. Could the waters be utilised in any way to the advantage of the nation? Twelve years ago the Electricity Com mission of Papua New Guinea proposed an answer to this question: the building of a dam across the river in the Wabo area of the Gulf Province. The generation of vast quantities of hydro-electric power could be fed into a national distribu tion grid and heavy industries could be established in the Gulf Province and other suitable localities to benefit from this power.
