In this context, interest in the environmental impact of sport events has also considerably grown. However, not much is known about how people currently perceive ES in mega sport events (MSEs) and if this influences their support to stage a MSE in their home country. To shed light on this question, a survey was conducted in Germany, which resulted in a sample of 917 respondents. The data show that about one-third of them think that ES is adequately implemented in the Olympic Games and the Football World Cup. Around half of the respondents state they are in favour of hosting these events in Germany in the future and multinomial logistic regressions reveal that positive and negative perceptions of the ES of the events are important predictors of support and opposition.

The FIFA 2010 Soccer World Championships in South Africa will be used as a descriptive example of a past mega-sporting event. The goal of the paper is to answer this question while also giving a diligent insight and thorough understanding of the Triple Bottom Line Model.

One of the most critical concerns in hosting sports events is paying attention to environmental aspects and sustainable development. In fact, the applicant cities must have practical environmental goals and action plans. Basically, the host cities have made significant initiatives to improve the environment in previous Olympic Games, but according to the data and studies, this major sporting event has also had detrimental consequences on the environment. Given the importance of sustainable development and environmental protection, this study examines the negative impacts of mega-sporting events on the environment. Therefore data were collected from qualitative interviews, library studies, and previous research. Fifteen experts in the sports and environment field were selected as a sample by snowball distribution method and the interview steps were performed until the theoretical saturation was reached (20-40 min in 3 sessions).

The supporting programme of the World Cup helped to increase Germany's reputation all over the world and improved its hospitality image worldwide. Environmental aspects were in the focus during the World Cup and several important actions helped to solve problems like waste management, water consumption and electricity consumption. The sustainability of these actions has to be observed in the future. The economic aspect was less significant. Although Germany invested large sums in infrastructure and stadiums, and had earnings of 500 million Euros from tourists, the growth in GDP is negligible. This is a general problem in large economies, because a movement of GDP needs extremely high monetary items. But in conclusion the FIFA World Cup 2006 was a success. Not from an economic point of view but with regard to international relationships and the reputation of Germany. A mega sports event needs a careful planning and a high willingness to invest money in infrastructure and venues. Then the impact can be very positive and must not be measured only from a financial point of view.
