Book Introduction to Natural Resource Planning

Download or read book Introduction to Natural Resource Planning written by Charles Yoe and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-10-05 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an exciting time for natural resources planning. There are amazing technologies available to planners and a wide and growing array of resources, problems, and opportunities that need attention. Private and public interests are taking up these issues all over the world and at all levels of involvement. At the same time, inefficient planning policies and procedures can threaten the art of successful planning. Demonstrating how to put effective planning theory into practice, Introduction to Natural Resource Planning introduces an iterative planning process with five steps and two ongoing processes. Suitable for any type of planning setting, the book describes each step of the planning process in extensive practical detail. Comprising field-tested strategies woven into a comprehensive and complete protocol, the book explores: Planners and the planning process Establishing the decision context, gathering evidence, plan formulation, and evaluating, comparing, and selecting plans The importance of public involvement Telling your story so that people understand and care about it Dealing effectively with uncertainty as part of the planning process Scenario planning when uncertainty obscures the future Economics for planners: cost estimates and economic analysis Fast planning and getting the most out of your planning process Practical tips from experienced natural resource planners Natural resources planning involves solving complex problems. Fascinating new issues continue to emerge as we seek to identify and preserve natural DNA, struggle with invasive and nonindigenous species, and worry about the well-being of native and managed pollinators. Meanwhile, we continue to struggle with familiar problems like water quality, developing resources for wise uses, loss of habitat, and floods, hurricanes, and other natural disasters. This volume will empower both experienced and new planners to plan more effectively for solutions to preserve and manage our natural resources.

Book excerpt: During the 1960s and 1970s, rapidly growing environmental awareness and concern created unprecedented demand for ecological expertise and novel challenges for ecological advocacy groups such as the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN). This book reveals how, despite their vast scientific knowledge and their attempts to incorporate socially relevant themes, IUCN experts inevitably struggled to make global schemes for nature conservation a central concern for UNESCO, UNEP and other intergovernmental organizations.

Book The Evolution of Water Resource Planning and Decision Making

Download or read book The Evolution of Water Resource Planning and Decision Making written by Clifford S. Russell and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This broad review of the development of US water resource policy analysis and practice offers perspectives from several disciplines: law, economics, engineering, ecology and political science. While the historical context provided goes back to the early 19th century, the book concentrates on the past 60 years and features a discussion of the difficulty that has generally been encountered in bringing the disciplines of economics and ecology into collaboration in the water resource context. The book explores the evolution of water related analytical capabilities and institutions and provides illustrations from case studies, concluding with recommendations for research, institutional change and action. Though designed to be a background textbook for interdisciplinary graduate seminars in water resources planning and management, it is accessible to interested lay readers and those who have policymaking or implementation responsibility but lack a technical background. The book will appeal to students and faculty in water policy, economics, and engineering, and in interdisciplinary programs organized around water resource problems and questions. Policy makers and general readers will also appreciate this non-technical introduction.

Book Natural Resources and Environmental Justice

Download or read book Natural Resources and Environmental Justice written by Sonia Graham and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2017-03-01 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental management involves making decisions about the governance of natural resources such as water, minerals or land, which are inherently decisions about what is just or fair. Yet, there is little emphasis on justice in environmental management research or practical guidance on how to achieve fairness and equity in environmental governance and public policy. This results in social dilemmas that are significant issues for government, business and community agendas, causing conflict between different community interests. Natural Resources and Environmental Justice provides the first comprehensive, interdisciplinary examination of justice research in Australian environmental management, identifying best practice and current knowledge gaps. With chapters written by experts in environmental and social sciences, law and economics, this book covers topical issues, including coal seam gas, desalination plants, community relations in mining, forestry negotiations, sea-level rise and animal rights. It also proposes a social justice framework and an agenda for future justice research in environmental management. These important environmental issues are covered from an Australian perspective and the book will be of broad use to policy makers, researchers and managers in natural resource management and governance, environmental law, social impact and related fields both in Australia and abroad.

Book Resource Significance A New Perspective for Environmental Project Planning

Download or read book Resource Significance A New Perspective for Environmental Project Planning written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One objective of this report is to encourage Corps planners to rethink their approach to the issue of the "significance" of environmental resources with respect to environmental project planning within the Corps Civil Works Program. Another objective is to summarize the results of a previous study that reviewed and evaluated programs that are currently establishing environmental resource priorities and the methods by which those priorities are being derived. The previous work was conducted as a first step in developing more detailed significance protocols to assist Corps planners in the identification and description of the significance of environmental resources. The Corps of Engineers is accustomed to planning water resources projects which provide outputs that can be valued in terms of dollars. Flood damage reduction and navigation projects are justified by an economic analysis that compares both project benefits (e.g., flood damage reduction, recreation) and construction and operation costs in monetary terms. Alternative project plans are evaluated based on a discrete decision criterion: the maximization of net national economic benefits. Currently, the Corps Civil Works budget guidance also identifies the restoration and protection of environmental resources, including fish and wildlife habitat, as a priority project purpose. In contrast to traditional project outputs, many of the outputs of environmental restoration projects cannot be measured in monetary terms because of inherent analytical problems in measuring environmental outputs and assigning accurate monetary values to environmental resources.
