The COVID-19 epidemic and the 2020 global pandemic have had an unprecedented public health impact. These included not only economic impacts but also social activities, and environmental and ecological impacts. This study examined the fact that net effects were positive, for example, in terms of greenhouse gas emissions, oil and gas exploration activities, and reductions in pollution. The most notable and most positive environmental impact of COVID-19 is the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from transportation sources. Air and road transport cause a huge portion of the pollution from closures and outages. Restrictions on economic and social mobility have had positive impacts, with reductions in transport and trade contributing significantly to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. By increasing their scale, endangered ecosystems benefit from improved environmental quality. To better understand how the environment is maintained, we summarize the evolution of COVID-19 and subsequent pandemics. The COVID-19 pandemic has had an unexpected and lasting impact on the environment. At the same time, ecological hotspots where human activity is commonly prevalent benefit from improved environmental quality, allowing wildlife and other life forms to thrive. For this reason, we can conclude that the COVID-19 outbreak and subsequent pandemic were beneficial to environmental stewardship.

There is now a pressing need to generate new literature on the connections between COVID-19 and sustainability. This is so for two main reasons. Firstly, the world crisis triggered by COVID-19 has severely damaged the world economy, worsening poverty, causing hardships, and endangering livelihoods. Together, these impacts may negatively influence the implementation of sustainable development as a whole, and of the UN Sustainable Development Goals in particular. These potential and expected impacts need to be better understood and quantified, hence providing a support basis for future recovery efforts. Secondly, the shutdown caused by COVID-19 has also been having a severe impact on teaching and research, especially –but not only – on matters related to sustainability. This may also open new opportunities (e.g. less travel, more Internet-based learning), which should be explored further, especially in the case of future pandemics, a scenario which cannot be excluded. The book meets these perceived needs.

In particular, the deficits in preparedness for major risks that became apparent in the course of the Corona pandemic cannot be managed by nation states alone, especially since the probability of such events has risen continuously in recent decades and will continue to increase with growing globalization and urbanization and, in particular, as a result of climate change and its consequences. Increasing the resilience of agri-food systems may need to become a priority for many national economic systems. In this scenario, the routes to achieve resilient agrifood systems are numerous and include reducing agriculture's dependence on energy, energy-intensive imports and raw material imports. Resilience also requires diversified import sources and market outlets through sound multilateral and bilateral trade policy.
