Book Water Policy for Sustainable Development

Download or read book Water Policy for Sustainable Development written by Dave Feldman and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2007-07-25 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The shortage of fresh water is likely to be one of the most pressing issues of the twenty-first century. A UNESCO report predicts that as many as 7 billion people will face shortages of drinking water by 2050. Here, David Lewis Feldman examines river-basin management cases around the world to show how fresh water can be managed to sustain economic development while protecting the environment. He argues that policy makers can employ adaptive management to avoid making decisions that could harm the environment, to recognize and correct mistakes, and to monitor environmental and socioeconomic changes caused by previous policies. To demonstrate how adaptive management can work, Feldman applies it to the Delaware, Susquehanna, Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint, Sacramento--San Joaquin, and Columbia river basins. He assesses the impacts of runoff pollution and climate change, the environmental-justice aspects of water management, and the prospects for sustainable fresh water management. Case studies of the Murray-Darling basin in Australia, the Rhine and Danube in Europe, the Zambezi in Africa, and the Rio de la Plata in South America reveal the impediments to, and opportunities for, adaptive management on a global scale. Feldman's comprehensive investigation and practical analysis bring new insight into the global and political challenges of preserving and managing one of the planet's most important resources.

This report examines China's development plans for seven main river basins and discusses the tremendous problems the country faces in scaling down water projects to match reduced funding. It also reviews the need to link water development to changes in the macroeconomy and the management of water institutions. Water management specialists describe the benefits of an integrated system for developing river basins and suggest changes in China's water policies. They recommend actions to improve river basin commissions, make management more efficient, create a cost recovery system, enforce higher environmental standards, and provide resettlement and job training.

Download or read book Water Quality Management written by Asit K. Biswas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-03 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global attention in recent years has focused primarily on water quantity and allocation issues. Water quality has received significantly less attention than water quantity. Commendable progress has been made by the developed world to control point sources of pollution, but commensurate progress in reducing non-point sources has not been made. In the third world countries both point and non-point sources of pollution are becoming increasingly a serious concern. Already, nearly all water bodies in such countries near and around urban centres have been severely polluted, with very high health and environmental costs. The book assesses the current status of water quality management in both developed and developing worlds, as well as analysing the effectiveness of economic instruments and legal and institutional frameworks to control water contamination. It outlines the importance of building up social and political awareness to reverse the trend of continuing water quality deterioration, which is likely to be a most challenging task in the coming years. This book was published as a special issue of International Journal of Water Resources Development.
