Book Summary Report

Download or read book Summary Report written by MacLaren Marex Inc and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "During the period July - November 1978, Canadian Marine Drilling Ltd. (CANMAR) carried out exploration drilling in the Beaufort Sea. MacLaren Marex Inc. of St. John's, Newfoundland, was contracted by Canmar to provide ice and meteorological observers for the operations. One observer was provided to each of the drillships, joining the vessels at their winter harbours in the latter part of June. During the operations, the observers carried out duties of: 1. Meteorological observations in conjunction with the radio operators. 2. Ice observations in conjunction with the vessel captains and mates. 3. Oceanographic measurements (primarily currents, waves, sea temperature profiles, salinity profiles, and turbidity profiles). The work was intended to meet three needs: to provide data for weather forecasts, to provide operational information on ice hazards, and to build up a background of environmental data for long term planning information. This report summarises the environmental work done during the 1978 operation, with emphasis on the ice work. Section 2 reviews the measurement schedules, the equipment used, and the equipment reliability. Section 3 presents a brief chronology of the observation work, and Section 4 gives recommendations for future work of this type. Four special reports were prepared on particular events during this period, which are presented as attachments to the chronology. Attachment 1: Extracts from the report on the departure, due to ice, of Canmar Explorer III from Location Kaglulik A-75, 20th July 1978. Attachment 2: Ship's Log Extracts - Explorer II, Transit to Kaglulik 29th October - 1st November, 1978. Attachment 3: Review of Operations in Ice at Kaglulik M-64, 1st - 3rd November 1978. Canmar Exlorer II. Attachment 4, Ship's Log Extracts - Explorer II. Transit from Kaglulik M-64 to Summer's Harbour, 4th - 7th November 1978. ... In all aspects, the experience of working ships in ice has been vastly increased, as well as knowledege of the limits of vessel capabilities. Many suggestions have been made for improving aspects of the work, ranging over the complete spectrum of drillship and supply boat design down to special designs of radar reflectors. A few recommendations are put forward in the Summary Report as well, representing suggestions by individual ice observers. There is, however, one main conclusion to the work, which should be stated at the outset. It is that the safe conduct of all work in ice is dependent on the alerness of those involved, both on the support vessels and the drillships. Improvement in equipment and techniques may serve to increase capabilities or improve quality of information on ice hazards, but the success of the ice work as well as the problems that are met could be directly linked to the alertness of personnel to hazards, and the communication of that information to all concerned"--Page 1.

Book Formal Modelling in Electronic Commerce

Download or read book Formal Modelling in Electronic Commerce written by Steven O. Kimbrough and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-11-23 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in automation for electronic commerce require improved understanding and formalization of the objects, processes, and policies of commerce itself. These include business objects such as bills of lading and contracts; processes such as workflows and trade procedures; and policies covering such problems as contract or procedure validation and strategic behaviour. This book is about theory, formalization, and proof-of-concept implementation of these and related matters. In addition to presenting state-of-the-art results, the book places this work in the context of nearly twenty years of developments in formal modelling for electronic commerce. A comprehensive bibliography and index are provided.

Book Evaluation of Hovercraft for Dispersant Application

Download or read book Evaluation of Hovercraft for Dispersant Application written by D.F. Dickins Associates and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Field trials carried out in Vancouver in 1986. Critical questions were the ability of hovercraft to fly over oil slicks at high speed without displacing the oil out of path, potential of hovercaraft to impart vertical mixing energy into water col umn to aid dispersion process and ability to mount suitable spray boom & obtain uniform spray pattern across swath width. Positive answers to first and last questions were obtained. There does not appear to be any significant long term vertical mixing in hovercraft wake.

Book Effect of Seismic Energy on Snow Crab Chionoecetes Opilio

Download or read book Effect of Seismic Energy on Snow Crab Chionoecetes Opilio written by John Robert Christian and published by [Calgary] : Environmental Studies Research Funds. This book was released on 2004 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concern has been expressed by commercial fishermen that seismic surveys may affect the health and/or behaviour of snow crab. This study examines the effects of seismic survey air gun noise on snow crab & snow crab catches. The study investigated a number of health, behavioural, & reproductive variables before, during, & after seismic shooting in a preliminary attempt to assess potential effects on physical, biochemical, or activity patterns in subject crabs. The study site was Conception Bay, Newfoundland, an area considered to be typical prime crab grounds. Fishing experiments were conducted in a controlled manner using standard & modified crab traps, with seven sets prior to shooting and six afterward. Crab movement & behaviour after exposure to air gun shots was monitored for caged crabs by video camera and for transmitter-tagged crabs by hydrophones. Caged crabs were also exposed to air gun shots at various depths and were sampled to assess potential indicators of stress & physical damage, in comparison to control crabs not exposed to shots. An important component of that study was to determine if lethal effects occurred three months after exposure. Results of this research are presented & discussed and direct effects on crab physiology are summarized.

Book Beaufort Sea Extreme Wave Studies Assessment

Download or read book Beaufort Sea Extreme Wave Studies Assessment written by M. Alan Murray and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, the two most recently publicly available hindcast studies for the Beaufort Sea have been reviewed. The studies, conducted respectively by Hydrotechnology and Seaconsult, differ markedly in their treatment of the storm windfields and the available fetch length. Consequently, there is a considerable disparity between their estimate of extreme wave heights for deep water conditions, although for shallow water the agreement is more favourable. A systematic assessment of their respective methodologies indicated factors which would help to undo some of the conservatism in the Seaconsult estimates and warrant a slight increase in the Hydrotechnology results.

Book Analytical Modelling of Oil and Gas Spreading Under Ice

Download or read book Analytical Modelling of Oil and Gas Spreading Under Ice written by G. Comfort and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evaluation of the recent model developed by Wotherspoon et al. was performed by undertaking a separate spreading analysis based on the observed processes and on a review of the available literature. This evaluation was done for a spill in the southern Beaufort Sea for the case where currents are neglible. The resulting analysis was used to predict the probable spread of oil and gas under an ice sheet. The results were than compared to the predictions made by the Wotherspoon model.
