Book Environment and Statecraft The Strategy of Environmental Treaty Making

Download or read book Environment and Statecraft The Strategy of Environmental Treaty Making written by Scott Barrett and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2003-01-09 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental problems like global climate change and stratospheric ozone depletion can only be remedied if states cooperate with one another. But sovereign states usually care only about their own interests. So states must somehow restructure the incentives to make cooperation pay. This is what treaties are meant to do. A few treaties, such as the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, succeed. Most, however, fail to alter the state behaviour appreciably. This book develops a theory that explains both the successes and the failures. In particular, the book explains when treaties are needed, why some work better than others, and how treaty design can be improved. The best treaties strategically manipulate the incentives states have to exploit the environment, and the theory developed in this book shows how treaties can do this. The theory integrates a number of disciplines, including economics, political science, international law, negotiation analysis, and game theory. It also offers a coherent and consistent approach. The essential assumption is that treaties be self-enforcing-that is, individually rational, collectively rational, and fair. The book applies the theory to a number of environmental problems. It provides information on more than three hundred treaties, and analyses a number of case studies in detail. These include depletion of the ozone layer, whaling, pollution of the Rhine, acid rain, over-fishing, pollution of the oceans, and global climate change. The essential lesson of the book is that treaties should not just tell countries what to do. Treaties must make it in the interests of countries to behave differently. That is, they must restructure the underlying game. Most importantly, they must create incentives for states to participate in a treaty and for parties to comply.

Book International Environmental Treaties and State Behavior

Download or read book International Environmental Treaties and State Behavior written by Denise DeGarmo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-14 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the growing recognition of the importance of environmental issues for nation-state security, current research on international environmental security is insufficient. Although scholars in the field of International Relations believe that there is an appropriate role for international relations theory in analyzing global environmental concerns, the existing literature is predominantly descriptive or prescriptive rather than analytical. This study attempts to remedy this problem by conducting an empirical analysis of nation-state behavior in the international environmental realm.

Book The Role of Multilateral Environmental Agreements

Download or read book The Role of Multilateral Environmental Agreements written by Britta Sjostedt and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-05-28 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The environment suffers enormously during armed conflicts and, despite the increasing awareness of the pressing need to protect the planet, devastating environmental damage can occur legally at times of war. This book suggests that – apart from the protection offered under law of armed conflict – environmental treaties or multilateral agreements (MEAs) can complement and strengthen environmental protection when war occurs. Previous research has focused on the protection offered under the law of armed conflict (in particular international humanitarian law) and customary international environmental law concerning wartime environmental damage, or whether environmental treaties remain applicable at times of armed conflict. This book, however, is the first in-depth scholarly examination of how environmental treaties can apply in wartime and how they can contribute to the protection of the environment in relation to armed conflict. It also offers an updated study of environmental protection under the law of armed conflict, including the latest developments in the International Law Commission's work on this underexplored topic.

Book Environmental Diplomacy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Lawrence E. Susskind
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2014-11-18
  • ISBN : 019029762X
  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book Environmental Diplomacy written by Lawrence E. Susskind and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-11-18 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International environmental agreements have increased exponentially within the last five decades. However, decisions on policies to address key issues such as biodiversity loss, climate change, ozone depletion, hazardous waste transport and numerous other planetary challenges require individual countries to adhere to international norms. What have been the successes and failures in the environmental treaty-making arena? How has the role of civil society and scientific consensus contributed to this maturing process? Why have some treaties been more enforceable than others and which theories of international relations can further inform efforts in this regard? Addressing these questions with renewed emphasis on close case analysis makes this volume a timely and thorough postscript to the Rio-Plus 20 summit's celebrated invocation document, The Future We Want, towards sustainable development. Environmental Diplomacy: Negotiating More Effective Global Agreements provides an accessible narrative on understanding the geopolitics of negotiating international environmental agreements and clear guidance on improving the current system. In this book, authors Lawrence Susskind and Saleem Ali expertly observe international environmental negotiations to effectively inform the reader on the geopolitics of protecting our planet. This second edition offers an additional perspective from the Global South as well as providing a broader analysis of the role of science in environmental treaty-making. It provides a unique contribution as a panoramic analysis of the process of environmental treaty-making.

Book Environmental Protection and the Law of War

Download or read book Environmental Protection and the Law of War written by Glen Plant and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gulf War has focused attention on the environmental dimensions of armed conflict. This authoritative book summarizes and exemplifies the main themes and tenets of international law in relation to war and the environment. It brings together the pronouncements and opinions of legal authorities from varied backgrounds and jurisdictions to produce a comprehensive examination of the topic. After a broad introductory essay by the editor, succeeding chapters deal with scientific aspects of the impact of war on the environment; existing international law; problems in negotiating a new treaty and a proposal for a new International Convention of Environmental Protection in War (The Fifth Geneva).
