Book Environmental Management Systems and ISO 14001

Download or read book Environmental Management Systems and ISO 14001 written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-05-05 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1996, the Federal Facilities Council (FFC), which operates under the aegis of the National Research Council, established a standing committee on Environmental Engineering with the express purpose of providing a forum where federal environmental engineers and program managers could meet on a regular basis to exchange information about facilities-related environmental programs, policies, and issues. The committee members, like environmental program managers in other types of organizations, are increasingly concerned about achieving and demonstrating sound environmental performance by meeting the requirements of environmental regulations and limiting the impacts of their products or services on the environment. To foster communication and address concerns about EMSs, the FFC Standing Committee on Environmental Engineering hosted a one-day workshop on Environmental Management Systems and ISO 14001. The workshop was held April 9, 1998, at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C.

Book Environmental Management Systems

Download or read book Environmental Management Systems written by Stephen Tinsley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The book examines the way in which EMSs are structured to ensure that a company achieves continuous improvement in environmental performance. Alongside practical advice for businesses that wish to achieve accreditation, the book addresses key issues to be aware of to ensure optimum benefits, different strategies that companies may adopt to establish an EMS and the challenges that arise when trying to integrate an EMS into the business strategy. Also included is a review of the ways in which academics try to categorize and predict the effectiveness of these different approaches to EMS using modelling tools. Finally, case studies are presented to demonstrate examples of companies that have implemented their own EMS, the different approaches that they have taken and the resulting issues that have emerged."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Nuclear Waste Management in a Globalised World

Download or read book Nuclear Waste Management in a Globalised World written by Urban Strandberg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-level nuclear waste (HLW) is a controversial and risky issue. For the next 100 years, the HLW will be subject to policy decisions and value assessments. Physically safe, technologically stable, and socio-economically sustainable HLW-management will top the agenda. That must be accomplished in a society whose segments are both stable and in a rapid state of flux, under the influence of global as well as national factors, private interests as well as the vagaries of national politics. Among the challenges to be faced is how to codify responsibilities of nuclear industry, governments and international organisations, and any adopted management policy must attain legitimacy at the local, national, regional and global levels. All such considerations raise questions about the practical and theoretical knowledge. This special issue book will address these questions by exploring HLW-management in Canada, France, Germany, India, Sweden, the UK and the USA. Special emphasis will be placed on highlighting national context, current trends and uncertainties, with relevance to a socially sustainable contemporary and future HLW-management.

Book New South African Review 3

Download or read book New South African Review 3 written by Stephanie Allais and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An evaluation of the ANC's second phase of the national democratic revolution. In the face of the continuing national tragedy of the inequality, poverty and unemployment which have triggered rising working-class discontent around the country, the ANC announced a 'second phase' of the 'national democratic revolution' to deal with the challenges. Ironically, the ANC post-Mangaung has resolved to preserve the core tenets of the minerals-energy-financial complex that defined racial capitalism - while at the same time ratcheting up the revolutionary rhetoric to keep the working class and marginalised onside. If the 'first phase' was a tragedy of the unmet expectations of the majority, is the 'second phase' likely to be a farce? The chapters in this volume are written by experts in their fields and address issues of politics, power and social class; economy, ecology and labour; public policy and social practice; and South Africa beyond its borders. They examine some of these challenges, and indicate that they are as much about the defective content of policies as their poor implementation. The third volume of the New South African Review continues the series by providing in-depth analyses of the key issues facing the country today.

Book Environmental Management Systems

Download or read book Environmental Management Systems written by and published by American Water Works Association. This book was released on 2006 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project was developed with two primary objectives: (1) to identify potential benefits to drinking water utilities from an environmental management system (EMS) and (2) to define steps necessary to develop a water utility sector'specific EMS model from which utilities could create their own EMS. This report reflects both the initial research into alternative EMS models and a ?best practices? guidance based on the ISO 14001 framework. With the input of leading private and public water utilities, this document was developed to assist water utilities interested in developing an EMS that will support and ensure continual improvement, increase thoroughness in compliance efforts, and demonstrate environmental excellence. Includes CD with Appendices.
