Book Environmental Control of Products and Substances

Download or read book Environmental Control of Products and Substances written by Betty Gebers and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 1994 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, environmental law has focused on the impacts of industrial plants. There exists a broad range of directives covering the classical environmental issues of air pollution and water pollution in the European Community and in national legislations. Future environmental law and policy will have to consider much more than in the past the effects of products and substances. New models, like concepts for a regulation of material flows, will have to be developed. This volume assembles the contributions of the 1993 Annual Conference of the Environmental Law Network International, which was devoted to this particular issue. After outlining recent developments in the EC and in Central and Eastern Europe, the impacts of substances during the life cycle of a product and the existing regulatory to handle these impacts are being discussed. Further contributions relating to the field of conflict between product control and the internal market are followed by reviews of new instruments that could lead to a better information and control.

Book Policy Success in an Age of Gridlock

Download or read book Policy Success in an Age of Gridlock written by Lawrence S. Rothenberg and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-27 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1990, polarization hindered changing environmental policy statutorily. Yet, in mid-2016 the Lautenberg Act regulating toxics - chemicals employed in commerce - was passed, winning business and environmental support. What might explain this? Has the Trump administration undercut the law's effects? Does the Act's passage portend more progressive actions? We show that the Act was a function of the status quo changing due to regulatory efforts abroad and in the United States, and from outside pressures on business. These influences impacted implementation, with the Trump administration not targeting toxics regulation analogous to other programs. Further, the processes we observe for toxics may not be unique.

Book Environmental and Health Regulation in the United States and the European Union

Download or read book Environmental and Health Regulation in the United States and the European Union written by M. Smith and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-03-12 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the first decade of the twenty-first century, the United States increasingly has relaxed its regulatory posture in the face of critical challenges to public health and the environment. This is true for regulation of recycling of end-of-life products, including autos and electronic components; potentially hazardous chemicals; and health claims on food labels. Coincidentally, the European Union has gravitated toward more restrictive regulation in these very same areas. How might we explain these diverging regulatory trajectories of the world s two largest market economies in an era of rising public awareness of dangers to the public and the planet? The explanation derives not from cultural differences in willingness to tolerate risk, but rather from distinctive regulatory tradeoffs - between environment and competitiveness in the United States and environment, competitiveness, and integration in the EU.

Book The Export of Hazard

Download or read book The Export of Hazard written by Jane H. Ives and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-02-03 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report, first published in 1985, written by a distinguished group of legal and public policy experts, documents the growing trade in hazardous industries and toxic products. Hazard export threatens the health and environment of workers and ordinary citizens the world over. It is carried out by transnational corporations, in order to locate their most dangerous industrial activities outside the US, in countries where regulatory controls may be less strict. The issues represented here include occupational safety, environmental protection, international relations and problems of legal control. Attention is focused on the political and economic impact of hazard export on the US, Europe and developing countries, and the book’s critical analysis is addressed directly to the institutional level best suited to constructive action. This title will be of interest to students of business studies.
