Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first part of the paper the relationships of the behaviour and population biology of marine fishes to environmental conditions are reviewed indicating the kinds of oceanographic data which are useful to fishermen and fishery managers. The general characteristics of the services needed to provide such information are considered along with methods of obtaining the data needed quickly and efficiently. Ten examples of operating environmental services of various countries are discussed in detail in the second part of the paper, along with a review of other services, either proposed or implemented, for which less detailed information is available.

Book World Fisheries

Download or read book World Fisheries written by Rosemary Ommer and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-02-08 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This exciting new book grew out of an international symposium held at FAO, Rome in July 2008, but it is not just a collection of papers from that symposium. Rather, the publication brings together work on social-ecological marine research that cuts across disciplines, identifies key common elements and approaches that promote resilience of marine social-ecological systems in the face of global changes, and points to next steps. The book comprises contributions on conceptual issues relating to social-ecological responses in marine systems to global changes; offers illustrative case studies of specific examples of social-ecological responses in marine systems to significant environmental changes manifested locally; develops a syntheses between natural and social scientists on the topic, and points the way forward with innovative approaches to the use of science and knowledge in management, policy and advice. World Fisheries is part of Wiley-Blackwell's prestigious Fish and Aquatic Resources Series, and encompasses chapters from many scientists at the top of their fields worldwide. Carefully drawn together and edited by four world experts in the area, World Fisheries is a landmark publication which is an essential purchase for all fisheries managers worldwide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This topical and exciting textbook describes fisheries exploitation, biology, conservation and management, and reflects many recent and important changes in fisheries science. These include growing concerns about the environmental impacts of fisheries, the role of ecological interactions in determining population dynamics, and the incorporation of uncertainty and precautionary principles into management advice. The book draws upon examples from tropical, temperate and polar environments, and provides readers with a broad understanding of the biological, economic and social aspects of fisheries ecology and the interplay between them. As well as covering 'classical' fisheries science, the book focuses on contemporary issues such as industrial fishing, poverty and conflict in fishing communities, marine reserves, the effects of fishing on coral reefs and by-catches of mammals, seabirds and reptiles. The book is primarily written for students of fisheries science and marine ecology, but should also appeal to practicing fisheries scientists and those interested in conservation and the impacts of humans on the marine environment. particularly useful are the modelling chapters which explain the difficult maths involved in a user-friendly manner describes fisheries exploitation, conservation and management in tropical, temperate and polar environments broad coverage of 'clasical' fisheries science emphasis on new approaches to fisheries science and the ecosystem effects of fishing examples based on the latest research and drawn from authors' international experience comprehensively referenced throughout extensively illustrated with photographs and line drawings

Book Improving the Collection Management and Use of Marine Fisheries Data

Download or read book Improving the Collection Management and Use of Marine Fisheries Data written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-12-10 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Congress has promoted fisheries science for over a century and its involvement in fisheries management took a great leap forward with passage of the Fisheries Conservation and Management Act of 1976. In the past decade, Congress has requested advice from the National Research Council (NRC) on both national issues (e.g., individual fishing quotas and community development quotas) and the assessments related to specific fisheries (Northeast groundfish). This report was produced, in part, in response to another congressional request, this time related to the assessments of the summer flounder stocks along the East Coast of the United States. Following the initial request, the NRC, National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), and congressional staff agreed to broaden the study into a more comprehensive review of marine fisheries data collection, management, and use.

Book Identification and analysis of marine fisheries research Case studies from selected countries in the Fishery Committee for the Eastern Central Atlantic CECAF area of competence

Download or read book Identification and analysis of marine fisheries research Case studies from selected countries in the Fishery Committee for the Eastern Central Atlantic CECAF area of competence written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2022-03-01 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During 2020, the ASFA Secretariat supported the CECAF-PESCAO project by compiling an inventory of marine fisheries research produced in nine countries (Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Mauritania, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, Spain). A search methodology was agreed with the CECAF project team, with support from the EAF-Nansen Programme to identify relevant marine fisheries research. Further parameters, including publication date and author affiliation, were defined in order to conduct systematic and repeatable searches. In the first stage, online searches were conducted using four sources (ASFA, Google Scholar, Web of Science and Scopus). The second stage involved searching local and nationally held collections (library catalogues, institutional websites or repositories) to identify further references. The results from these searches were then combined to produce an inventory of 2 411 unique references. A bibliometric analysis was then conducted on the inventory which revealed intensive publishing activity and strong collaboration across the region, however publishing in predatory journals and difficulty in locating grey literature on online sources were areas where further work is needed to ensure research produced in the area reaches a wide audience. A detailed analysis of research published by authors affiliated to Senegalese institutions was conducted which revealed a significant gender imbalance of authors (only 13 percent of authors identified in the study were female). Recommendations included in this report are to expand the inventory and analysis to other CECAF member countries and to take steps to ensure the grey literature produced by authors from the CECAF region is indexed by online sources.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A draft Environmental Assessment (EA) to analyze impacts of NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) issuance of an Endangered Species Act section 10(a)(1)(A) research/enhancement permit for the Nason Creek spring Chinook Salmon hatchery program was released by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) for a 15-day public comment period on May 30, 2013 (78 FR 32378). Since the draft EA was published, the applicants have requested that NMFS extend the permit duration from 10 years to 13 years to remain consistent with the permit duration for other hatchery programs in the Wenatchee River Basin. NMFS has determined that this change does not affect any of the analysis in the draft EA or warrant further public review. Changes to the text of the draft EA to reflect the new permit duration are indicated in redline/strikeout format. Minor editorial changes to the draft EA are not shown in redline/strikeout format"--Executive summary (page vii).

Book Environmental Oceanography Topics and Analysis

Appropriate for a wide range of readers, Environmental Oceanography works well as a stand-alone text when supplemented with web-based activities, a lab-based course book, and as a supplement to main texts in oceanography and marine science for those instructors who would like to add an active learning focus to their course. Regardless of whether you are teaching a large or small course, Environmental Oceanography will engage and excite your students and prompt them to think critically about pressing environmental issues.
