Book Environmental Impact Assessment

Download or read book Environmental Impact Assessment written by Peter Wathern and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive treatment of environmental impact assessment (EIA) provides an authoritative contemporary review of theory and practice over the past ten years. EIA is viewed as both science and art, reflecting the concern both with technical aspects of appraisal and the effects of EIA on the decision-making process. Adopted in many countries, with different degrees of enthusiasm, since its inception in the early 1970's, EIA is established as a major procedure for assessing the environmental implications of legislation, the implementation of policy and plans and the initiation of development projects. EIA is increasingly an essential part of environmental management

Book Comparison of Major Construction Projects and Offshore Hydrocarbon Developments in Atlantic Canada

Download or read book Comparison of Major Construction Projects and Offshore Hydrocarbon Developments in Atlantic Canada written by Atlantic Consulting Economists Limited and published by [Toronto, Ont.] : Gardner Pinfold Consulting Economists. This book was released on 1985 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offshore oil and gas development in Atlantic Canada will involve construction of onshore facilities as well as onshore construction of structures for offshore installation. These activities will generate substantial levels of employment and may have significant impacts on communities in the Atlantic provinces. This report attempts to provide a frame of reference for assessing the scale and implications of such projects. It contains a body of data allowing direct comparisons among recent major construction projects familiar to Atlantic province residents, such as oil refineries and power plants, and the proposed Venture and Hibernia offshore developments. Included in the comparative data considered relevant for developing the frame of reference are project schedules, capital costs, employment requirements, and social impacts. The report also contains descriptive profiles of each of the projects.

Book Unbuilt Environments

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jonathan Peyton
  • Publisher : UBC Press
  • Release : 2017-01-27
  • ISBN : 0774833076
  • Pages : 276 pages

Download or read book Unbuilt Environments written by Jonathan Peyton and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2017-01-27 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the latter half of the twentieth century, legions of industrial pioneers came to northwestern British Columbia with grand plans for mines, dams, and energy-development schemes. Yet many of their projects failed to materialize or were abandoned midstream. Unbuilt Environments reveals that these lapsed resource projects had lasting effects on the natural and human environment. Drawing on a range of case studies to analyze the social and environmental impacts of unfinished projects, Jonathan Peyton considers development failure a productive concept for northwestern Canada. He looks at a closed asbestos mine, an abandoned rail grade, an imagined series of hydroelectric installations, a failed LNG export facility, and a transmission line – and finds that these unrealized developments continue to shape contemporary resource conflicts.

Book Environmental Impact Assessment

Download or read book Environmental Impact Assessment written by Kevin Stuart Hanna and published by Don Mills, Ont. : Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental Impact Assessment: Participation and Practice provides and essential introduction to the evolution and practice of environmental impact assessment in a Canadian context. The Canadian setting is particularly representative of the lasting influence of EIA the diversity of issuesEIA processes now address, and the more complex definition of environment that many public agencies must now consider. The federal and provincal governments in Canada each have their own EIA system, and as the later chapters in this book illustrate, despite some commonalities of these systems, theycan vary substantially in what they cover and to whom they apply. Before exploring the detailed discussions of process and application, and the jurisdictional case studies, a brief review of the context and basic process of environmental impact assessment is covered in chapter one. The succeeding chapters provide detailed explorations of process, the evolution ofCanadian EIA, analyses of methods and approaches, case studies, and illustrations of EIA as practiced by Canada's provincal and federal governments.
