Book Aid and Political Conditionality

Download or read book Aid and Political Conditionality written by Olav Stokke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-03 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreign aid has increasingly become subject to political conditionality. In the 1980s some institutions made aid dependent upon the recipient countries' economic policy reforms. Market liberalisation was the primary instrument and objective. In the 1990s such conditionality was brought one step further; aid was now linked to political reforms, affecting recipient countries' governing systems, requiring democracy, human rights and 'good governance'. This volume looks at these developments and considers the conditionality policies of several European aid donors. Such policies are also considered from recipient perspectives, both from the Third World and Russia, and the issue is also considered from a historical perspective.

Book Public Sector Performance and Development Cooperation in Rwanda

Download or read book Public Sector Performance and Development Cooperation in Rwanda written by Stephan Klingebiel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-30 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study provides a conceptual framework for analysing Results-Based Approaches to improving public sector effectiveness and efficiency according to their actor constellation and shared characteristics. Though the importance of functioning public sector agencies and organizations for sustainable development is accepted, public sector reform efforts have achieved only modest success. Results-Based Approaches aim at improving public sector performance through the establishment of reward modalities on the domestic and international levels, and the authors evaluate the potential of these approaches to provide an entry point for development cooperation. Applying their framework to empirical data obtained from fieldwork in Rwanda, they analyse the main domestic performance approach – Imhigo – and suggest how this might be strengthened.

Book Transnational Socialist Networks in the 1970s

Download or read book Transnational Socialist Networks in the 1970s written by Christian Salm and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transnational Socialist Networks in the 1970s argues that western European socialist parties' transnational cooperation across national borders significantly influenced politics and policy-making in what was the European Communities (EC). It focuses on the network-like informal structures that characterised transnational cooperation between the party members and leaders of different socialist parties involved in European affairs. Taking the example of two case studies, namely EC development aid policy and EC southern enlargement policy, the book demonstrates that the socialist parties strengthened their informal transnational network structures for the purposes of debating ideological and programmatic issues and finding policy solutions to common challenges in both policy fields. Moreover, it shows that the networks developed various functions to influence European governance. Against this background, the analysis in this book makes not only a significant contribution to the study of transnational networks of western European socialist parties and the history of European integration, but also adds to the understanding of the role of transnational networks in European politics and policy-making.
