Book Responsibility and Cultures of the World

Download or read book Responsibility and Cultures of the World written by Edith Sizoo and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together eleven contributions by authors from all parts of the world who have examined the notion of responsibility in their respective countries. In the first part Edith Sizoo presents a comparative analysis of those texts which reflect a rich variety of worldviews and traditions: harmony with the earth and relational ethics in the Maori culture of New Zealand, juridical approach in France, responsibility in Confucian thinking in China, individualism in the face of collective duty in the United States, duty and responsibility on the shores of the Congo, responsibility in Arab Islamic culture, encountering the sense of responsibility in Germany... This book thus presents an intercultural vision of responsibility that is all the more interesting because the final texts are the outcome of an intense dialogue between the authors. This exchange enhanced a more explicit expression of their respective points of view, thus making these more accessible to people from other cultural backgrounds.

Book Michael Amaladoss and the Quest for Indian Theology

Download or read book Michael Amaladoss and the Quest for Indian Theology written by Enrico Beltramini and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2024-09-17 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Jesuit priest born in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, Michael Amaladoss is one of the most prominent Asian thinkers in the field of interreligious dialogue. Bringing his unique perspective toward the nature of God and Christ, Christian dialogue with Indian Vedanta, and the reconciliation between spirituality and social justice, Amaladoss has contributed to the creation of a distinctly Indian "pole" of Catholic theology, without the mediating force of Western culture and philosophy. With this book, Enrico Beltramini offers an assessment of Amaladoss's thought and an investigation into his main theological concerns.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abhishiktānanda (also known as Henri le Saux OSB) is among the most studied Roman Catholic expatriates in India. His life and work have been investigated mainly in the fields of spirituality and interreligious dialogue. While his search for the spiritual awakening is well known, however, less known is his effort to reawaken the sacramental sensibility within the Roman Catholic Church. No scholar has, in fact, extensively analyzed Abhishiktānanda's understanding of issues surrounding nature and the supernatural. In this book, the focus is primarily on Abhishiktānanda's concern for the sacramental character of all created existence in terms of the connection between the ecclesial character of his spiritual search and the underlying theme of his theological and literary writings. While the scope of this study is limited, it nonetheless subjects Abhishiktānanda to an interpretative turn by proposing a reinterpretation of him as primarily a product of mid-twentieth century French Roman Catholicism in transition from the reigning neo-Scholasticism to the theology of ressourcement.

Book Space Imagination and the Cosmos from Antiquity to the Early Modern Period

Download or read book Space Imagination and the Cosmos from Antiquity to the Early Modern Period written by Frederik A. Bakker and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-05 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a much needed, historically accurate narrative of the development of theories of space up to the beginning of the eighteenth century. It studies conceptions of space that were implicitly or explicitly entailed by ancient, medieval and early modern representations of the cosmos. The authors reassess Alexandre Koyré’s groundbreaking work From the Closed World to the Infinite Universe (1957) and they trace the permanence of arguments to be found throughout the Middle Ages and beyond. By adopting a long timescale, this book sheds new light on the continuity between various cosmological representations and their impact on the ontology and epistemology of space. Readers may explore the work of a variety of authors including Aristotle, Epicurus, Henry of Ghent, John Duns Scotus, John Wyclif, Peter Auriol, Nicholas Bonet, Francisco Suárez, Francesco Patrizi, Giordano Bruno, Libert Froidmont, Marin Mersenne, Pierre Gassendi, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz and Samuel Clarke. We see how reflections on space, imagination and the cosmos were the product of a plurality of philosophical traditions that found themselves confronted with, and enriched by, various scientific and theological challenges which induced multiple conceptual adaptations and innovations. This volume is a useful resource for historians of philosophy, those with an interest in the history of science, and particularly those seeking to understand the historical background of the philosophy of space.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Besides offering a critical analysis of the WHO definition and a review of both ancient and contemporary conceptions of health, the cooperative effort of physicians and philosophers presented in this book works through the challenges which any definition of health faces, if it is to be both truly personalist, and at the same time operational. The overall purpose of this book is to capture the essentials of human health and to propose the outlines for a personalist understanding of this concept, i.e., a conception that does justice to the personal nature of human beings by introducing dimensions that are essential to personal life and well-being, such as the realms of rationality, affectivity and freedom, the realms of meaning, values, morality, and spirituality, the realms of social and interpersonal relations.

Download or read book The Mystery and the World written by Maria Clara Bingemer and published by Lutterworth Press. This book was released on 2017-02-23 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Mystery and the World, Maria Clara Bingemer explores how the place of religion in society has dramatically shifted since the Enlightenment. The modern era is characterised by a major change in humanity's fundamental desires that means that reason has taken the place of faith. Human beings, in their ongoing search for a scientific understanding of the world, have drifted away from seeking any essence of transcendence in their lives. Bingemer examines this transition and how, especially inthe postmodern era, it has led to technology and superficial happiness becoming all-important as opposed to the more sacred sense of contentment that governed us for centuries prior to the Enlightenment. In her discussion, however, Bingemer demonstrates that we as humans have not lost our innate desire to believe in a higher power and that, even in our world of instant satisfaction, we still need to fill the void left by religion. Through well-researched analysis of the modern era and discussion of some of the mystics of more recent times, she reveals to readers how our religious belief, whilst changed, is not dead and is still an important aspect of our existence.

Book Commentary and Tradition

Download or read book Commentary and Tradition written by Pierluigi Donini and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2010-12-23 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume collects the most important papers Pierluigi Donini wrote in the last three decades with the aim of promoting a better assessment of post-hellenistic philosophy. The philosophical relevance of post-hellenistic philosophy is now widely (though not yet universally) recognized. Yet much remains to be done. The common practice of focusing each single school in itself detracts from a balanced assessment of the strategies exploited by many philosophers of the period. On the assumption that debates among schools play a major role in the philosophy of the commentators, Donini concentrates on the interaction between leading Aristotelians and Platonists and demonstrates that the developments of both systems of thought were heavily influenced by a continuous confrontation between the two schools. And whereas in cases such as Alcinous and Aspasius this is basically uncontroversial, for other authors such us Alexander, Antiochus and Plutarch the pioneering work of Donini paves the way for a better understanding of their doctrines and definitely confirms the intellectual importance of the first imperial age, when the foundations were laid of versions of both Aristotelianism and Platonism which were bound to influence the whole history of European thought, from Late Antiquity onwards.

Book La restauration de la cr ation

Download or read book La restauration de la cr ation written by Michele Cutino and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-12-05 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. La restauration de la création aims to examine the status of animals in ancient and medieval Christian thought following an eschatological perspective, that is, focusing on the question of the salvation of animals according to the divine plan. The volume is articulated in three parts: Biblical sources, in particular the promise of the renewal of creation according to Rm 8, 21; Patristic and medieval doctrinal elaborations on the question; finally, contemporary considerations regarding the status of animals in our societies. Often absent from the current social debate on the subject, the historical Christian perspective which this volume proposes is intended as an original contribution to today’s ongoing reflexion on the legal and ethical status of animals.
