Book Ecology and Biogeography of High Altitude Insects

Download or read book Ecology and Biogeography of High Altitude Insects written by M.S. Mani and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In my book Introduction to High Altitude Entomology, published in 1962, I summa rized the results of eight years' studies, mainly on the Himalaya. I have since then had the opportunity of studying the collections of high altitude insects from the Alps, Carpathians, Caucasus, Urals, Alai-Pamirs, Tien Shan, Altai and other im portant mountains of the world in different museums and institutions in Europe. Through the courtesy and generosity of the Academy of Sciences of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, I was also able to personally collect insects and make valuable field observations on the Caucasus, the Alai-Pamirs, Ala-Tau and the Tien Shan mountains. Through comparative studies I have tried to synthesize the fundamental principles of high altitude entomology. I have described here the distinctive characters of the high altitude environment, the ecological specializations of the high altitude insects, their ecological inter relations and the outstanding peculiarities of their biogeography. I have also pre sented here an outline of the high altitude entomology of the principal mountains of the world, with brief accounts of their orogeny, geology and vegetation. This book differs from all other contributions in the field in its comparative ecological approach and in the fact that the main emphasis is throughout on the evolution of the high altitude ecosystem as an integral part of the orogeny. High mountains are, in all parts of the world, important and independent centres of origin and differ entiation of distinctive and highly specialized ecosystems and faunas.

Book A Guide to the Archives of the Royal Entomological Society

Download or read book A Guide to the Archives of the Royal Entomological Society written by Simon Fenwick and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Royal Entomological Society was founded in 1833 and is one of the oldest such societies in the world. Its records are an invaluable source for historians of entomology and the natural sciences both in Great Britain and overseas. This guide is principally a catalogue of the records of the society from the time of its foundation, but also covers the records of some earlier societies and collections of papers by individual entomologists. The book is introduced with essays by Brian Gardiner on the history of the Royal Entomological Society and on the development of British entomology, and by Simon Fenwick on the archives and their potential for historians.

Book The Science of Forensic Entomology

Download or read book The Science of Forensic Entomology written by David B. Rivers and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2023-11-20 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Science of Forensic Entomology builds a foundation of biological and entomological knowledge that equips the student to be able to understand and resolve questions concerning the presence of specific insects at a crime scene, in which the answers require deductive reasoning, seasoned observation, reconstruction and experimentation—features required of all disciplines that have hypothesis testing at its core. Each chapter addresses topics that delve into the underlying biological principles and concepts relevant to the insect biology that forms the bases for using insects in matters of legal importance. The book is more than an introduction to forensic entomology as it offers in depth coverage of non-traditional topics, including the biology of maggot masses, temperature tolerances of necrophagous insects; chemical attraction and communication; reproductive strategies of necrophagous flies; archaeoentomology, and use of insects in modern warfare (terrorism). As such it will enable advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students the opportunity to gain a sound knowledge of the principles, concepts and methodologies necessary to use insects and other arthropods in a wide range of legal matters.

Book Iranian Entomology An Introduction

Download or read book Iranian Entomology An Introduction written by Cyrus Abivardi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-07-03 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This major work presents the first comprehensive survey on entomological studies in Iran from prehistoric periods up to modern times. This concise collection and excerpts from the literature are complemented by over 130 color figures of superb quality showing insects and their habitats. Volume 1 Faunal Studies concentrates on the systematic taxonomy of Iranian insects. It also lists all members of Rhopalocera (butterflies) and four families of Heterocera (moths). An introductory chapter is reserved for basic information on the geography, vegetation and climate of Iran. Volume 2 Applied Entomology starts with a chapter on the history of entomology in Iran until current times. Several chapters cover agricultural aspects of entomology, such as destructive insects, biological control or cultivars exhibiting resistance to insect pests. Other chapters are on medical entomology, e.g. mosquito-, sandfly- or flea-borne diseases and human myiasis.

Book Advances in Quaternary Entomology

Download or read book Advances in Quaternary Entomology written by Scott A. Elias and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2009-08-18 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Quaternary Entomology addresses the science of fossil insects by demonstrating their immense contribution to our knowledge of the paleoenvironmental and climatological record of the past 2.6 million years. In this comprehensive survey of the field, Scott A. Elias recounts development of scholarship, reviews the fossil insect record from Quaternary deposits throughout the world, and points to rewarding areas for future research. The study of Quaternary entomology is becoming an important tool in understanding past environmental changes. Most insects are quite specific as to habitat requirements, and those in non-island environments have undergone almost no evolutionary change in the Quaternary period. We therefore can use their modern ecological requirements as a basis for interpreting what past environments must have been like. - Describes and identifies principal characteristics of fossil insect groups of the Quaternary period - Ties Quaternary insect studies to the larger field of paleoecology - Offers global coverage of the subject with specific regional examples - Illustrates specific methods and procedures for conducting research in Quaternary Entomology - Offers unique insight into overlying trends and broader implications of Quaternary climate change based on insect life of the period
