Book From Fundamentals to Applications in Geotechnics

Download or read book From Fundamentals to Applications in Geotechnics written by D. Manzanal and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2015-12-11 with total page 3344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work of geotechnical engineers contributes to the creation of safe, economic and pleasant spaces to live, work and relax all over the world. Advances are constantly being made, and the expertise of the profession becomes ever more important with the increased pressure on space and resources. This book presents the proceedings of the 15th Pan-American Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (XV PCSMGE), held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in November 2015. This conference, held every four years, is an important opportunity for international experts, researchers, academics, professionals and geo-engineering companies to meet and exchange ideas and research findings in the areas of soil mechanics, rock mechanics, and their applications in civil, mining and environmental engineering. The articles are divided into nine sections: transportation geotechnics; in-situ testing; geo-engineering for energy and sustainability; numerical modeling in geotechnics; foundations and ground improvement; unsaturated soil behavior; embankments, dams and tailings; excavations and tunnels; and geo-risks, and cover a wide spectrum of issues from fundamentals to applications in geotechnics. This book will undoubtedly represent an essential reference for academics, researchers and practitioners in the field of soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering. In this proceedings, approximately 65% of the contributions are in English, and 35% of the contributions are in Spanish or Portuguese.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Triticale's days as a scientific curiosity are definitely over. Its wide acceptance as a feed, grain or forage crop, or for baking and malting, plus its high yields under marginal or stress conditions have made it an economically important crop in countries such as Poland, Germany, Australia, Portugal, Brazil, Morocco and China. This publication contains selected, reviewed, and up-to-date papers presented at the Third International Triticale Symposium held in Lisbon, Portugal, by the International Triticale Association and EUCARPIA. Among the broad spectrum of subjects addressed in these presentations are cytogenetics, biotechnology, genetic resources, breeding, agronomic practices and diseases. Also included are triticale's food, feed and forage uses, as well as its marketing processes. In a world of increasing population and decreasing agricultural resources, triticale offers a genuine solution for increasing land utilization and grain production.

Book Liberalism in Modern Times

Download or read book Liberalism in Modern Times written by Jos‚ Guilherme Merquior and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The premature death in 1991 of the Brazilian essayist, thinker and diplomat Jose G. Merquior robbed the international intellectual community of a gifted 'friend of reason and a defender of liberty'. Several essays in this volume, directly or indirectly, broadly or personally, pay tribute to the life and work of this 'politically engaged intellectual'. Part I examines Merquiorian thought itself and - aptly enough - begins with Merquior's own incisive review of the rebirth of the liberal idea and recommitment to democracy itself. Part II ranges more widely: here, such distinguished contributors as John Hall, Ernest Gellner and Noberto Bobbio develop some of Merquior's favourite themes - liberalism as it relates to social cohesion, political stability, morality, republicanism and democracy, and the relativism and scepticism that characterize postmodern thinking. The book's application to two regions of the world is direct and obvious: to Merquior's own Latin America and to Central and Eastern Europe, where rapid political change and economic transition have brought debates on liberalism to the forefront. But in Merquior's thought there are also lessons for Western Europe and the United States, where the very familiarity of the liberal tradition can lead to a certain sterility of ideas. These various perspectives in liberal political thought are brilliantly drawn out by Ernest Gellner in the Preface - one of the last pieces he wrote before his death in November 1995.

Book Foucault in Brazil

    Book Details:
  • Author : Marcelo Hoffman
  • Publisher : University of Pittsburgh Press
  • Release : 2024-02-20
  • ISBN : 082299125X
  • Pages : 277 pages

Download or read book Foucault in Brazil written by Marcelo Hoffman and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2024-02-20 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosopher Michel Foucault’s cultural criticism crosses disciplines and is well known as an influence on modern conceptions of knowledge and power. Less well known are the five trips he took to Brazil between 1965 and 1976. Although a coup in 1964 had installed a military dictatorship, Foucault kept his opinion on the Brazilian government largely to himself until October 23, 1975. On that date, he delivered a manifesto at a student assembly in São Paulo expressing his solidarity with students and professors protesting a wave of arrests and torture. This manifesto caught the government’s attention and became the focal point of the dictatorship’s surveillance of Foucault. Foucault in Brazil explores the production of the public antagonism between the philosopher and the dictatorship through a meticulous consideration of each of his visits to Brazil. Marcelo Hoffman connects history, philosophy, and political theory to open new ways of thinking about Foucault as a person and thinker and about Brazil and authoritarianism.

How can centers and peripheries be recognized by their ontological and axiological features? How does the axiological saturation of a literary field condition aesthetics? How did these factors transform center-periphery relationships to the former metropolises of Romance literatures of the Americas and Africa? What are the consequences of various deperipheralization contexts and processes for poetics? Using theoretical sections and case studies, this book surveys and investigates the limits of globalization. Through explorations of the intercultural dynamics, the aesthetic contributions of former peripheries are examined in terms of the transformative nature of peripheries on centralities.

Book Embracing the Past Designing the Future

Download or read book Embracing the Past Designing the Future written by Luciano Aronne de Abreu and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2020-01-01 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Embracing the Past, Designing the Future provides an historical overview of Brazilian authoritarianism and social/economic development during the political era (1930-45) of Getulio Vargas as viewed and understood by Oliveira Viana and Azevedo Amaral, two of the principal intellectuals and ideologues of the regime at the time. Oliveira Vianna was one of the main authors of the corporatist labour legislation and Azevedo Amaral remained an important publicist who was associated with the regimes propaganda apparatus. the heart of the discussion is the legitimacy of authoritarian modernisation. Brazil's contemporary uncertainty has deep parallels with the earlier period: unruly and un-democratic political debate coupled with economic stagnation. It was during the Vargas era that the power bases and fundamental principals of the construction of modern Brazil were defined in terms of its political administration and its economy and industry. These features may still be perceived in the country today, albeit claimed or rejected by political leaders such as Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Fernando Henrique Cardoso. Linkage between authoritarianism and the economic development of Brazil is strong, whether viewed through the lenses of history, sociology or political science. Both periods of exceptional national economic and social growth were associated exactly to its two governmental authoritarian periods in the twentieth century the Vargas era and the military dictatorship (196485). This volume addresses a complex of ideological difficulties that go to the heart of what the Brazilian nation stands for: its racial construction; its colonial heritage; the fractured nature of the relationship between society and state; the role of corporatism, and its sometime political rejection; and the dangers of political personalisation, to the detriment of the nation.
