Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his third published book, Enigma Beyond Illusion , Richard D. Kydd Jr. again demonstrates his compassion and concern for his fellow man, his anger at life's injustices, his deep sense of family and community, and his spirituality. With his skillful and often musical touch he operates on many levels at once, frequently blending seemingly opposed emotions. In "The Shopper's Song," for example, he evokes both humor and identification in his description of a compulsive spender, yet the reader can hear Kydd's tone of frustration at the debt that is consuming the poor. "A Quiet Dissertation" is simultaneously hilarious and disturbing, and the chuckle that "Binary Code" evokes is an uneasy one. Kydd's range is wide, swinging from the caustic social comment of "Yo Romeo" through the philosophical introspection of "Solitary Man," and expanding into the spiritual vision of "Life Calling Forth." Although he calls life as he sees it and is sometimes grittily realistic, even cynical and full of apparent despair, it's notable that a number of his works are love poems. Although capable of painting a harsh reality, Kydd is essentially an optimistic poet, and he amply demonstrates his belief that in the end the spirit will triumph, as in "Oh Victorious." This collection of poems will give the reader a full taste of Kydd's broad human vision.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does the brain piece together the information required to achieve object recognition, figure-ground segmentation, object completion in cases of partial occlusion and related perceptual phenomena? This book focuses on principles of Gestalt psychology and the key issues which surround them, providing an up-to-date survey of the most interesting and highly debated topics in visual neuroscience, perception and object recognition. The volume is divided into three main parts: Gestalt and perceptual organisation, attention aftereffects and illusions, and color vision and art perception. Themes covered in the book include: - a historical review of Gestalt theory and its relevance in modern-day neuroscience - the relationship between perceptive and receptive fields - a critical analysis of spatiotemporal unity of perception - the role of Gestalt principles in perceptual organization - self-organizing properties of the visual field - the role of attention and perceptual grouping in forming non-retinotopic representations - figural distortions following adaptation to spatial patterns - illusory changes of brightness in spatial patterns - the function of motion illusions as a tool to study Gestalt principles in vision - conflicting theories of color vision and the neural basis of it - the role of color in figure-ground segmentation - chromatic assimilation in visual art and perception - the phenomena of colored shadows. Including contributions from experts in the field, this book will provide an essential overview of current research and theory on visual perception and Gestalt. It will be key reading for researchers and academics in the field of visual perception and neuroscience.

Book Love from a Broken Fire Escape

Download or read book Love from a Broken Fire Escape written by Richard D. Jr. Kydd and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2007-11 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this collection of love poems, Kydd has once again captured the essential duality of the human heart, and of existence itself. The poems range from a celebration of love at first sight and the physical ecstasy of two lovers entwined as one, to the despair of having lost love, for reasons beyond control or understanding. As usual with Kydd's work there is a strong spiritual element, with the soul seeking its ultimate fulfillment. He presents the union between lovers, the mingling of two souls into one, as this fulfillment. But when love is lost suffering is intense, and Kydd also shows this unsparingly. Kydd wouldn't be himself without a healthy streak of cynicism and reality. In the poem ASK NOT he says simply: Never ask "Do you love me" if you do they don't And although his final poem, The Breath of Love, is basically positive and romantic, a few pages previous, when describing his first kiss in COW POKE, he can't resist saying: No sweeter memory in mind and heart could I fathom to this day. Yet in spite of the heightened passion of the moment a thought lingered in my mind ever afterward. .as sweet as her lips felt that wonderful day of my youth her breath smelled and tasted like sour milk.

Book excerpt: People who are not addicts themselves cannot understand the irrational, self-destructive actions of those who are, and often judge them morally. Few feel compassion for those they call "dope fiends." Poet Richard D. Kydd Jr. opens a window into the deep suffering of the millions whose lives are dominated by the endless search for the next high. His unsparingly authentic snapshots of life in the grip of addiction make the entire drug culture vividly real. But Kydd's real power lies in his ability to elicit understanding and compassion for addicts. His grittily real but lyrical descriptions of the tragic but compellingly human lives of addicts will change the way you look at these social outcasts forever. This book speaks powerfully to three groups. Non-addicts will get a glimpse into hell, and come away more accepting, less inclined to judge. Reformed addicts will experience their pasts vividly, and come away determined to remain clean. Addicts will be frightened by this unsparingly honest look, and will hopefully come away determined to heal. Kydd is a spokesman of the downtrodden and despairing - yet he is a poet of hope. Chasing the Dragon is one of his most focused, powerful works.

Book Mind Warp 20 20

  • Publisher : iUniverse
  • Release : 2003-10-19
  • ISBN : 0595295312
  • Pages : 122 pages

Download or read book Mind Warp 20 20 written by Richard Kydd, Jr. and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2003-10-19 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Mind Warp 20/20 (After Shock), his fifth volume of published poetry, Richard D. Kydd JR. shows once again the wide breadth of his perspective. Just when poems such as the street-wise A Fool's Way and the tragically cynical Crack Down convinces you his vision is bleak, he surprises you with the optimistic spirituality of Spirit in Flight, or the haunting imagery of Life of Its Own. Kydd's work is full of seemingly contradictory surprises. Many of his poems deal with apparently helpless struggles and situations, yet there is an undercurrent of humor that shows the poet's maturity and acceptance of difficult circumstances. The facetious frustration of Meter Beater transitions smoothly to the still funny but savage reaction to unemployment of Job Hunter. He swings with ease from the raunchy physical humor of Free Style to the romantic spirituality of Intertwined. Searingly realistic but tempered with deep compassion and a true awareness of the beauty of humanity, this collection of Kydd's work reveals him to be a champion of the disadvantaged, and a mature observer of life's troubles and rewards.

Book Beyond The Illusions

Download or read book Beyond The Illusions written by Yogie Chandra Tatvaraj and published by Ukiyoto Publishing. This book was released on 2023-11-24 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As one evolves with life, there are primarily two ways a person can think: how precious this life is or this life was never about me! Beyond our illusions, the Buddhist, Advaita, and modern cutting-edge physics state that the observer is real, not the individual entity or the universe. Rather, awareness and infinite consciousness is what really exists, beyond the mirage of forms that come and go that make up our living experience (through our physical senses). The book looks at the Self or No-Self (Non-Self), the universe, contentment, happiness and sadness etc., concluding there is no perfect life or right belief system but it’s how we perceive ‘reality’ and subsequently wire our consciousness. It argues that perception is reality and we live in plural realities. How we perceive this dance of light and energy is up to our awareness, leading to a blissful or sorrowful life. The book digs into Advaita Vedanta, Physics, Philosophy, Buddhism, and Neuroscience to validate this central thesis. The basic message in this whole book is to CELEBRATE LIFE, every day should be a CELEBRATION, and think LIGHTLY OF YOURSELF AS Socrates beautifully commented I’M THE WISEST MAN ON EARTH AND I KNOW ONE THING THAT I KNOW NOTHING! – AMEN

Book Asante Ntahera Trumpets in Ghana

Download or read book Asante Ntahera Trumpets in Ghana written by Joseph S.Kaminski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the author's fieldwork in Ghana with the Asante and Denkyira ntahera trumpeters, this book draws on interviews, field recordings, oral traditions, written accounts, archaeological evidence, transcriptions and linguistic analyses to situate the Asante trumpet tradition in historical culture. There are seven ivory trumpet ensembles in residence at the Asante Manhyia Palace in Kumase, and ivory trumpets are blown at every Akan court. The Asante trumpets, which are made from elephant tusks, are symbols of Asante strength and have an important role in Asante cosmology. Surrogate speech is performed via lipped tones through a tusk in praise of the Asante royal ancestors and the living Asante king. This book contains transcriptions and analyses of surrogate speech texts and their accompanying ensemble songs. When several ensembles play simultaneously as a representation of power, they make staggered entrances, beginning separate songs in order. This results in a simultaneous performance of separate songs. This phenomenon, which Kaminski has termed 'sound-barrage', is an ancient aesthetic, and is performed to protect the kingdom and the ancestors. It is both spiritual and acoustical. This 'sound barrage' is believed to act in the metaphysical world, dispelling evil spirits from court rituals, ancestor venerations, and funerals, for there is a spirit in the sound.

Book Illusions of Human Thinking

Download or read book Illusions of Human Thinking written by Gabriel Vacariu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-19 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book illustrates that the traditional philosophical concept of the "Universe”, the "World” has led to anomalies and paradoxes in the realm of knowledge. The author replaces this notion by the EDWs perspective, i.e. a new axiomatic hyperontological framework of Epistemologically Different Worlds” (EDWs). Thus it becomes possible to find a more appropriate approach to different branches of science, such as cognitive neuroscience, physics, biology and the philosophy of mind. The consequences are a better understanding of the mind-body problem, quantum physics non-locality or entanglement, the measurement problem, Einstein’s theory of relativity and the binding problem in cognitive neuroscience.

Book Cinema s Bodily Illusions

Download or read book Cinema s Bodily Illusions written by Scott C. Richmond and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2016-10-15 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do contemporary big-budget blockbuster films like Gravity move something in us that is fundamentally the same as what avant-garde and experimental films have done for more than a century? In a powerful challenge to mainstream film theory, Cinema’s Bodily Illusions demonstrates that this is the case. Scott C. Richmond bridges genres and periods by focusing, most palpably, on cinema’s power to evoke illusions: feeling like you’re flying through space, experiencing 3D without glasses, or even hallucinating. He argues that cinema is, first and foremost, a technology to modulate perception. He presents a theory of cinema as a proprioceptive technology: cinema becomes art by modulating viewers’ embodied sense of space. It works primarily not at the level of the intellect but at the level of the body. Richmond develops his theory through examples of direct perceptual illusion in cinema: hallucinatory flicker phenomena in Tony Conrad’s The Flicker, eerie depth effects in Marcel Duchamp’s Anémic Cinéma, the illusion of bodily movement through onscreen space in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001, Godfrey Reggio’s Koyaanisqatsi, and Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity. In doing so he combines insights from Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology of perception and James J. Gibson’s ecological approach to perception. The result is his distinctive ecological phenomenology, which allows us to refocus on the cinema’s perceptual, rather than representational, power. Arguing against modernist habits of mind in film theory and aesthetics, and the attendant proclamations of cinema’s death or irrelevance, Richmond demonstrates that cinema’s proprioceptive aesthetics make it an urgent site of contemporary inquiry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Brilliant...Timely and necessary.” —Financial Times “Especially timely as we struggle to make sense of how it is that individuals and communities persist in holding beliefs that have been thoroughly discredited.” —Darren Frey, Science If reason is what makes us human, why do we behave so irrationally? And if it is so useful, why didn’t it evolve in other animals? This groundbreaking account of the evolution of reason by two renowned cognitive scientists seeks to solve this double enigma. Reason, they argue, helps us justify our beliefs, convince others, and evaluate arguments. It makes it easier to cooperate and communicate and to live together in groups. Provocative, entertaining, and undeniably relevant, The Enigma of Reason will make many reasonable people rethink their beliefs. “Reasonable-seeming people are often totally irrational. Rarely has this insight seemed more relevant...Still, an essential puzzle remains: How did we come to be this way?...Cognitive scientists Hugo Mercier and Dan Sperber [argue that] reason developed not to enable us to solve abstract, logical problems...[but] to resolve the problems posed by living in collaborative groups.” —Elizabeth Kolbert, New Yorker “Turns reason’s weaknesses into strengths, arguing that its supposed flaws are actually design features that work remarkably well.” —Financial Times “The best thing I have read about human reasoning. It is extremely well written, interesting, and very enjoyable to read.” —Gilbert Harman, Princeton University

Book Beyond Biocentrism

  • Author : Robert Lanza
  • Publisher : BenBella Books, Inc.
  • Release : 2016-05-03
  • ISBN : 1942952228
  • Pages : 225 pages

Download or read book Beyond Biocentrism written by Robert Lanza and published by BenBella Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2016-05-03 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biocentrism shocked the world with a radical rethinking of the nature of reality. But that was just the beginning. In Beyond Biocentrism, acclaimed biologist Robert Lanza, one of TIME Magazine's "100 Most Influential People in 2014," and leading astronomer Bob Berman, take the reader on an intellectual thrill-ride as they re-examine everything we thought we knew about life, death, the universe, and the nature of reality itself. The first step is acknowledging that our existing model of reality is looking increasingly creaky in the face of recent scientific discoveries. Science tells us with some precision that the universe is 26.8 percent dark matter, 68.3 percent dark energy, and only 4.9 percent ordinary matter, but must confess that it doesn't really know what dark matter is and knows even less about dark energy. Science is increasingly pointing toward an infinite universe but has no ability to explain what that really means. Concepts such as time, space, and even causality are increasingly being demonstrated as meaningless. All of science is based on information passing through our consciousness but science hasn't the foggiest idea what consciousness is, and it can't explain the linkage between subatomic states and observation by conscious observers. Science describes life as a random occurrence in a dead universe but has no real understanding of how life began or why the universe appears to be exquisitely designed for the emergence of life. The biocentrism theory isn't a rejection of science. Quite the opposite. Biocentrism challenges us to fully accept the implications of the latest scientific findings in fields ranging from plant biology and cosmology to quantum entanglement and consciousness. By listening to what the science is telling us, it becomes increasingly clear that life and consciousness are fundamental to any true understanding of the universe. This forces a fundamental rethinking of everything we thought we knew about life, death, and our place in the universe.

Book Beyond Meaning

Download or read book Beyond Meaning written by Elly Ifantidou and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the fact that they are often crucial to our understanding, the vague, ineffable elements of language use and communication have received much less attention from linguists than the more concrete, effable ones. This has left a range of important questions unanswered. How might we account for the communication of non-propositional phenomena such as moods, emotions and impressions? What type of cognitive response do these phenomena trigger, if not conceptual or propositional? Do creative metaphors and unknown words in second languages and other ‘pointers’ to ‘conceptual regions’ communicate concepts learned from language alone? How might the descriptive ineffability of interjections, free indirect speech etc. be accommodated within a theory of communication? What of those working on the aesthetics of artworks, music and literature? What can evolution tell us about ineffability? The papers in this volume address these fascinating questions head-on. They represent a range of different attempts to answer them and, in so doing, allow us to pose exciting new questions. The aim, to bring the ineffable firmly within the grasp of theoretical pragmatics.

Book Perception beyond Inference

Download or read book Perception beyond Inference written by Liliana Albertazzi and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2023-09-19 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proposing a new paradigm for perceptual science that goes beyond standard information theory and digital computation. This book breaks with the conventional model of perception that views vision as a mere inference to an objective reality on the basis of "inverse optics." The authors offer the alternative view that perception is an expressive and awareness-generating process. Perception creates semantic information in such a way as to enable the observer to deal efficaciously with the chaotic and meaningless structure present at the physical boundary between the body and its surroundings. Vision is intentional by its very nature; visual qualities are essential and real, providing an aesthetic and meaningful interface to the structures of physics and the state of the brain. This view brings perception firmly in line with ethology and modern evolutionary biology and suggests new approaches in all disciplines that study, or require an understanding of, the ontology of mind. The book is the joint effort of a multidisciplinary group of authors. Topics covered include the relationships among stimuli, neuronal processes, and visual awareness. After considering the mind-dependent growing of information, the book treats time and dynamics; color, shape, and space; language and perception; perception, art, and design.

This book was released on 2014-04-09 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sorin Cerin (born November 25, 1963, Baia Mare, Romania) is a Romanian existentialist philosopher, logician, poet and essayist. If Osho is a mystic in his aphorisms, Sorin Cerin is an existentialist philosopher and logician, author of a new philosophical system called Coaxialism, but also author of philosophical poems, being an important existentialist poet of the 21st century whose existentialist philosophical poems are quoted by critics specialized alongside other philosophers, poets and existentialist authors such as Nietzsche, Heidegger, Sartre or Kierkegaard. Sorin Cerin is especially sought after by the general public, among existentialist poets and philosophers, both for his existentialist philosophical poems that focus mainly on Love, Existence, Illusion, the Absurd or Death, and for existentialist philosophical aphorisms, structured in several volumes, and previously published in various publishing houses, to be later reunited under the aegis of a single monumental volume, entitled Collection of Wisdom. This title first appeared in 2009, which together with the future editions of Sorin Cerin's Collections of Wisdom from the following years, brought him fame and international recognition, for which, Sorin Cerin, is considered to be one of the most representative existentialist philosophers, existentialist poets, but, also authors of wisdom, authors of philosophical aphorisms or thinkers of the sapiential genre, worldwide, and the philosophical aphorisms from this work, are selected in various publications or prestigious anthologies of the world.
