Book An Examination of the Effect of a Career Exploration Course on the Career Decision Self efficacy of Traditional age Undecided College Students

Download or read book An Examination of the Effect of a Career Exploration Course on the Career Decision Self efficacy of Traditional age Undecided College Students written by Lisa M. Bollman and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated the effect of a career exploration course on the career decision self-efficacy of traditional-age undecided college students, utilizing a single group pretest posttest design. The independent variables in this study were research participants' sex, cultural identification, and reported cumulative grade point average. The dependent variable in this study was career decision self-efficacy, which was measured by the Career Decision Self-Efficacy Scale-Short Form (Betz, Hammond, & Multon, 2005). The research participants were 141 college students enrolled in a 15-week career exploration course at a mid-sized, open enrollment, urban research institution in the Midwest. A paired samples t-test revealed that traditional-age college students' mean career decision self-efficacy total score increased significantly from the pretest, administered at the beginning of a career exploration course, to the posttest, administered at the end of the career exploration course. One-way analyses of variance found no statistically significant differences between the mean pretest career decision self-efficacy total score of study participants for the variables of sex, cultural identification, and reported cumulative grade point average. One-way analyses of variance of the mean total gain score on the posttest of the CDSE-SF found no significant differences in the total mean gain score of research participants for the variables of sex, cultural identification, and reported cumulative grade point average. A Pearson chi-square analysis revealed that a greater number of research participants who dropped out of the study had reported cumulative grade point averages below 2.0 than those participants who completed the study. An independent samples t-test found the participants who dropped out of the study to have a lower mean pretest career decision self-efficacy total score as measured by the CDSE-SF than those who completed the study. A major contribution of this study to the literature was the examination of grade point average on career decision self-efficacy. One implication of this study is that career exploration courses may be an effective intervention in increasing career decision self-efficacy of traditional-age undecided college students, and point to the need for interventions that promote career decision self-efficacy for college students with grade point averages below 2.0.

Book The Effects of a Career Development Course on Career and College Major Decision making in College Students

Download or read book The Effects of a Career Development Course on Career and College Major Decision making in College Students written by Sidra Tabassum Ashraf Baig and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explored the effects of a semester-long, 2 credit career development course on the undecided college students. Participants included undergraduate students enrolled in the Career Development (COUN 105) class and comparison group students enrolled in Introductory Psychology (PSYX 100), and Intimate and Family Relationship (COUN 295) classes at The University of Montana. Students were assessed at the beginning and the end of the Spring and Fall semesters, 2010 by using the Career Decision Self-Efficacy Scale-Short Form (CDSE-SF; Betz & Taylor, 1983), Career Orientation scale, Career Decision Scale (Osipow et al., 1976), and Decisional Process Inventory (Hartung, 1994). The main purpose of this quantitative research study was to determine whether a career development course offered at The University of Montana would have a positive, neutral, or negative effect on career decision-making, self-efficacy, and other career decision making processes among undergraduate students. Based on (MANOVA) results, COUN 105 students significantly increased their sense of career self-efficacy as a function of the course. Based on these results, it was recommended for the development and implementation of career courses for undecided undergraduates become mandatory.

Book Enhancing Career Development Agency in Emerging Adulthood

Download or read book Enhancing Career Development Agency in Emerging Adulthood written by Lindsay Noelle Oishi and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Career development is an important part of emerging adulthood, the period when 18- to 30-year-olds in modern societies explore possible roles, occupations and lifestyles (Arnett, 2000). To date, most theories and interventions have focused on career decision-making (Betz, 2007); however, for emerging adults embarking on the school-to-work transition, making a single, final career decision can be a source of anxiety and depression (Rottinghaus, Jenkins & Jantzer, 2009). This study investigated the effects of a course on career development for undergraduate juniors and seniors, which used an innovative "design thinking" curriculum to help students plan creatively for life after college. The intervention was hypothesized to increase students' career development agency, a new construct based on Bandura's (1989) theory of how individuals think and act intentionally. The intervention was also hypothesized to decrease participants' psychological distress related to career concerns. The study used a quasi-experimental approach with an intervention (treatment) condition and two comparison conditions, one consisting of college students who applied for the treatment but were waitlisted, and another drawn from the general student body. An online questionnaire was administered at the beginning and after the end of the ten-week academic quarter. A multivariate analysis of variance with repeated measures showed that class participants (n = 42) increased in career development self-efficacy, and moderately decreased in career-related negative affect. The comparison conditions (n = 62) did not show these outcomes. Students in the comparison conditions also reported a rise in dysfunctional career-related beliefs, which their peers in the class did not experience. Importantly, course participants' levels of career uncertainty did not change, on average, nor did they report changes in stressful life events or situations. The effect of the intervention was not to promote career decision-making, but rather to build self-confidence through productive action, and counteract common myths about career issues in emerging adulthood. Finally, regression analyses indicated that factors of career development agency (self-efficacy and contextual stressors) were more directly predictive of career-related negative affect than career uncertainty.

Book Contemporary Models in Vocational Psychology

Download or read book Contemporary Models in Vocational Psychology written by Frederick Leong and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-05-18 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, prepared in honor of Samuel H. Osipow, a prominent teacher, researcher, author, and pioneer in vocational psychology, deals with significant theoretical and practical issues in the field of vocational psychology. As a state-of-the-art review of contemporary models of vocational psychology, this book will provide current and up-to-date coverage of the topics. It will also contain in-depth reviews of models of vocational psychology by leading scholars, including career decision making models, career self-efficacy, occupational stress, cross-cultural assessment of interests, and career counseling services within university systems. A major theme that runs throughout all chapters is the concept of change. This unifying theme is fitting since the authors have prepared their chapters in honor of Osipow, who has significantly changed the field over the last four decades. This volume should serve as a valuable resource for vocational psychology researchers, counseling graduate students, and career counselors. In addition to being a professional text, it should also be a useful supplement text for career development and career counseling courses in graduate programs of counseling, counseling psychology, and industrial/organizational psychology.

Bonifacio and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Student teaching necessitates fulfilling both the demands of teaching internship and the academic life. This can bring about ill effects on the emotional, physical, and psychological well-being of the student teacher. The goal of this study was to discover the effects of Narrative Theraphy on the career decision making self-efficacy and career thoughts of graduating students teachers with occupational stress of the University of Santo Tomas. The True Experimental Pre-test--Post-test Control Group Design was employed. To identify the occupationally stressed students teachers, the Occupational Stress Inventory -Revised was used. Fifteen particiapants comprised the experimental group were given the neutral writing exercises. The groups were both pre-tested and post-tested using the Career Decision Making Self-efficacy-Short Form and Career Thoughts Inventory. Results revealed that the Narrative Theraphy intervention was useful in enhancing the career decision-making confidence and in reducing dysfunctional career thoughts of the graduating student teachers.
