Book excerpt: This new open access edition supported by the Fragility Fracture Network aims at giving the widest possible dissemination on fragility fracture (especially hip fracture) management and notably in countries where this expertise is sorely needed. It has been extensively revised and updated by the experts of this network to provide a unique and reliable content in one single volume. Throughout the book, attention is given to the difficult question of how to provide best practice in countries where the discipline of geriatric medicine is not well established and resources for secondary prevention are scarce. The revised and updated chapters on the epidemiology of hip fractures, osteoporosis, sarcopenia, surgery, anaesthesia, medical management of frailty, peri-operative complications, rehabilitation and nursing are supplemented by six new chapters. These include an overview of the multidisciplinary approach to fragility fractures and new contributions on pre-hospital care, treatment in the emergency room, falls prevention, nutrition and systems for audit. The reader will have an exhaustive overview and will gain essential, practical knowledge on how best to manage fractures in elderly patients and how to develop clinical systems that do so reliably.

Book Quality Improvement and Patient Safety in Orthopaedic Surgery

Download or read book Quality Improvement and Patient Safety in Orthopaedic Surgery written by Julie Balch Samora and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-09-08 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This practical, unique textbook provides a foundation for the essential elements of patient safety and quality improvement (QI) for orthopaedic trainees, though the content covered will be of interest to veteran clinicians as well. Currently, there are few existing resources and didactics focused on this crucial yet often overlooked area of medical practice, which makes this the first true textbook on the subject within the field of orthopaedic surgery. Utilizing a user-friendly approach including generous figures, tables, and bulleted key points, the text presents comprehensive background information on QI principles, models, and patient safety. More specifically, it focuses on orthopaedic concerns, such as biologics and implants, registries, checklists, surgical site infection risk reduction, use of evidence-based medicine and care maps, simulation to improve care, and shifting from volume to value, among others. Related topics such as diversity and inclusion, provider wellness strategies, leadership strategies to develop an efficient and safe work culture, and innovation are also presented. Throughout, the aim is to demonstrate that QI is a multidisciplinary goal that can only flourish in an environment of supportive accountability. With contributions by leaders in the field, Quality Improvement and Patient Safety in Orthopaedic Surgery provides trainees and surgeons in the field a valuable and pragmatic toolkit for successful and sustainable clinical practice.

Book Geriatrics for Specialists

Download or read book Geriatrics for Specialists written by Andrew G. Lee and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-08-31 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to be a single point of reference for advances in the care of geriatric populations across medical and surgical specialties. The aging population is a unique demographic with its own health challenges. Geriatricians are specifically trained to address these challenges but few medical students or residents enter geriatrics, even as the demand for geriatric expertise increases. The practices of many medical and surgical specialists are dominated by older patients who may themselves see many specialists but rarely visit geriatricians. This updated edition elucidates the most common medical conditions seen in aging patients and translates approaches to those conditions for physicians across specialties. Divided into three sections that assemble crosscutting issues, medical specialties, and surgical and related specialties, this book serves as a guide for clinicians of all backgrounds who will work with older patients as the demographic ages further. This second edition of Geriatrics for Specialists expands the number of specialist chapters to reflect growth in research in aging and clinical care for older people in dermatology, plastic surgery, and behavioral neurology. All original chapters from the first edition are extensively revised and updated to reflect the rapid growth of new knowledge in the field.

Book Fragility Fracture Nursing

Download or read book Fragility Fracture Nursing written by Karen Hertz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-15 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book aims to provide a comprehensive but practical overview of the knowledge required for the assessment and management of the older adult with or at risk of fragility fracture. It considers this from the perspectives of all of the settings in which this group of patients receive nursing care. Globally, a fragility fracture is estimated to occur every 3 seconds. This amounts to 25 000 fractures per day or 9 million per year. The financial costs are reported to be: 32 billion EUR per year in Europe and 20 billon USD in the United States. As the population of China ages, the cost of hip fracture care there is likely to reach 1.25 billion USD by 2020 and 265 billion by 2050 (International Osteoporosis Foundation 2016). Consequently, the need for nursing for patients with fragility fracture across the world is immense. Fragility fracture is one of the foremost challenges for health care providers, and the impact of each one of those expected 9 million hip fractures is significant pain, disability, reduced quality of life, loss of independence and decreased life expectancy. There is a need for coordinated, multi-disciplinary models of care for secondary fracture prevention based on the increasing evidence that such models make a difference. There is also a need to promote and facilitate high quality, evidence-based effective care to those who suffer a fragility fracture with a focus on the best outcomes for recovery, rehabilitation and secondary prevention of further fracture. The care community has to understand better the experience of fragility fracture from the perspective of the patient so that direct improvements in care can be based on the perspectives of the users. This book supports these needs by providing a comprehensive approach to nursing practice in fragility fracture care.
