Download or read book Empire of Dogs written by Aaron Skabelund and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2011-12-15 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1924, Professor Ueno Eizaburo of Tokyo Imperial University adopted an Akita puppy he named Hachiko. Each evening Hachiko greeted Ueno on his return to Shibuya Station. In May 1925 Ueno died while giving a lecture. Every day for over nine years the Akita waited at Shibuya Station, eventually becoming nationally and even internationally famous for his purported loyalty. A year before his death in 1935, the city of Tokyo erected a statue of Hachiko outside the station. The story of Hachiko reveals much about the place of dogs in Japan's cultural imagination. In the groundbreaking Empire of Dogs, Aaron Herald Skabelund examines the history and cultural significance of dogs in nineteenth- and twentieth-century Japan, beginning with the arrival of Western dog breeds and new modes of dog keeping, which spread throughout the world with Western imperialism. He highlights how dogs joined with humans to create the modern imperial world and how, in turn, imperialism shaped dogs' bodies and their relationship with humans through its impact on dog-breeding and dog-keeping practices that pervade much of the world today. In a book that is both enlightening and entertaining, Skabelund focuses on actual and metaphorical dogs in a variety of contexts: the rhetorical pairing of the Western "colonial dog" with native canines; subsequent campaigns against indigenous canines in the imperial realm; the creation, maintenance, and in some cases restoration of Japanese dog breeds, including the Shiba Inu; the mobilization of military dogs, both real and fictional; and the emergence of Japan as a "pet superpower" in the second half of the twentieth century. Through this provocative account, Skabelund demonstrates how animals generally and canines specifically have contributed to the creation of our shared history, and how certain dogs have subtly influenced how that history is told. Generously illustrated with both color and black-and-white images, Empire of Dogs shows that human-canine relations often expose how people—especially those with power and wealth—use animals to define, regulate, and enforce political and social boundaries between themselves and other humans, especially in imperial contexts.

Download or read book Age of Folly written by Lewis H. Lapham and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2016-10-11 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America’s leading essayist on the frantic retreat of democracy, in the fire and smoke of the war on terror In office as President of the United States, Donald J. Trump is undoubtedly a menace, but he isn’t a surprise. He embodies the spirit of an age of folly abandoned to conspicuous consumption of vanity and greed. A self-glorifying photo-op, Trump is made to the measure of an infotainment media in which presidential candidates are game show contestants brought to judgment on election day before the throne of cameras by whom and for whom they are produced. To regard Trump as an amazement beyond belief is to give him credit where none is due, to mistake a symptom for the cause. Trump’s presence in the White House follows from an American regime change over the last twenty-five years during which a weakened but still operational democracy gave way to a stupefied and dysfunctional plutocracy. The history of that change is a hedge against the despair of the present, making possible the revolt against what G. K. Chesterton called “the small and arrogant oligarchy of those who merely happen to be walking about.”

Download or read book Gag Rule written by Lewis Lapham and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2005-06-28 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From one of America’s most important voices of protest, an urgent polemic about the strangling of meaningful dissent—the lifeblood of our democracy—at the hands of a government and media increasingly beholden to the wealthy few. Dissent is democracy. Democracy is in trouble. Never before, Lewis Lapham argues, had voices of protest been so locked out of the mainstream conversation, so marginalized and muted by a government that recklessly disregards civil liberties, and by an ever more concentrated and profit-driven media in which the safe and the selling sweep all uncomfortable truths from view. In the midst of the “war on terror”—which made the hunt for communists in the 1950s look, in its clarity of aim and purpose, like the Normandy landings on D-Day—we faced a crisis of democracy as serious as any in our history. The Bush administration made no secret of its contempt for a cowed and largely silenced electorate, and without bothering to conceal its purpose the government coordinates, “not the defense of the American citizenry against a foreign enemy, but the protection of the American oligarchy from the American democracy.” Gag Rule is a rousing and necessary call to action in defense of one of our most important liberties, the right to raise our voices in dissent and have those voices heard.

Download or read book CSNY written by Peter Doggett and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2019 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The first-ever biography focused on the formative and highly influential early years of rock's first supergroup, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young--in honor of the fiftieth anniversary of Woodstock and the founding of the band itself. The original supergroup of folk rock David Crosby, Stephen Stills, and Graham Nash released their first album, Crosby Stills & Nash, in May 1969. By the time they got to Woodstock only a few months later, they had added Neil Young and went on to channel in their music all the radical anger, romantic idealism, and generational angst of their time. They had each already made their marks in huge bands (the Hollies, Buffalo Springfield, the Byrds), but together their harmonies were transcendent. Music journalist Peter Doggett first met the band twenty-five years ago and has had a lifelong love of their music. His interviews with the musicians and many of their closest friends and fellow rock stars, as well as access to CSNY's archive, provide new insights into their incredible catalog, from their delicate acoustic confessionals like 'Suite: Judy Blue Eyes' and 'Guinnevere' to raucous counterculture anthems 'Ohio' and 'Woodstock' to classics discovered by every new generation like 'Teach Your Children' and 'Our House.' Doggett also uncovers plenty of new stories and perspectives on the four tenacious and volatile songwriters' infamously reckless, hedonistic, and often combative lifestyles that led to their continuous breakups and behaviors extreme even by rock star standards. CSNY chronicles these iconic musicians and the movement they came to represent, concentrating on their prime as a collective unit and a cultural force: the years between 1969, when the Woodstock music festival telegraphed their arrival to the world, and 1974, when their archenemy Richard Nixon was driven from office and the band (to quote Graham Nash himself) 'lost it on the highway.' CSNY is a quintessential and definitive account of one of the biggest bands of the Woodstock generation."--Dust jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a camera and a bucket of treats, Shaina Fishman set herself up in a photo studio and watched puppies and their parents at play. The result is a wealth of delightful, irresistibly cute images: dogs laughing, playing, sneezing, yawning, and finally cuddling and going to bed. The lush, vivid photographs inside this book show a side of puppies that we’re usually not privy too—what they do when it’s just themselves and their parents. The images include dogs from a wealth of breeds, including golden retrievers, pugs, French bulldogs, dalmatians, and more! The dogs are big and small, young and old—some traditionally cute and a handful with a face that “only a mother could love” (and as you’ll see, she does!). And, as a bonus for readers, Fishman has included a model roster in the back of the book that reveals the names and ages of the puppies and their parents, and some of their favorite treats and activities, so readers can get to know them. There’s also a foreword from Shaina revealing her photography process and insider information on getting a finicky pet to smile. All photos inside are clear, crisp, and inviting—and without exception smile inducing. This is the perfect pick-me-up book: a treat for oneself as well as a gift destined to be cherished and returned to for a good laugh again and again
