Download or read book The English Reader Or Pieces in Prose and Verse written by Lindley Murray and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-06-26 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Reader, or Pieces in Prose and Verse: Selected From the Best Writers; Designed to Assist Young Persons to Read With Propriety and Effect, to Improve Their Language and Sentiments, and to Inculcate Some of the Most Important Principles of Piety and Virtue The Author has endeavoured to relieve the grave and serious parts of his collection. By the occasional admission of pieces Which amuse as well as instruct. If, however, an of his readers should think it contains too great a proportion o the former, it may be some apology to observe, that in the existing publications design ed for the perusal of young persons, the preponderance is greatly on the side of ga and amusing productions. Too much atten tion may be pai to this medium of improvement. When the imagination, of youth es eoiflly, is much entertained, the sober dic tates of the understan ing' are regarded with indifference; and the influence of good affections is either feeble, or transient. A temperate use of such entertainment seems therefore requisite, to afford proper scope for the operations of the understanding and the heart. The reader will perceive, that the Compiler has been solicitous to recommend to young persons, the perusal of the sacred Scrip tures, by interspersing through his work some of the most beauti ful and interesting passages of those invaluable writings. To ex cite an early taste and veneration for this cat rule of life, is a point of so high importance, as to warrant e attempt to promote it on every proper occasion. This he conceives to be peculiarly incum bent on every perfon who writes for the benefit of youth. It would, indeed, be a great and happy im provement in education, if no writings were allowed to come under their notice, but fuch as are perfectly innocent; and if, on all proper occafions, they were encouraged to perufe thofe which tend to infpire a due reverence for virtue, and an abhorrence of vice, as well as to animate them with fentiments of piety and goodnefs. Such imprefsions deeply engraven on their minds, and connected with all their attainments, could fearcely fail of attending them through life; and of producing a folidity of principle and character, that would be able to refilt the danger arifing from future intercourle with the world. Book Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8

Download or read book Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2015-07-23 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children are already learning at birth, and they develop and learn at a rapid pace in their early years. This provides a critical foundation for lifelong progress, and the adults who provide for the care and the education of young children bear a great responsibility for their health, development, and learning. Despite the fact that they share the same objective - to nurture young children and secure their future success - the various practitioners who contribute to the care and the education of children from birth through age 8 are not acknowledged as a workforce unified by the common knowledge and competencies needed to do their jobs well. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 explores the science of child development, particularly looking at implications for the professionals who work with children. This report examines the current capacities and practices of the workforce, the settings in which they work, the policies and infrastructure that set qualifications and provide professional learning, and the government agencies and other funders who support and oversee these systems. This book then makes recommendations to improve the quality of professional practice and the practice environment for care and education professionals. These detailed recommendations create a blueprint for action that builds on a unifying foundation of child development and early learning, shared knowledge and competencies for care and education professionals, and principles for effective professional learning. Young children thrive and learn best when they have secure, positive relationships with adults who are knowledgeable about how to support their development and learning and are responsive to their individual progress. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 offers guidance on system changes to improve the quality of professional practice, specific actions to improve professional learning systems and workforce development, and research to continue to build the knowledge base in ways that will directly advance and inform future actions. The recommendations of this book provide an opportunity to improve the quality of the care and the education that children receive, and ultimately improve outcomes for children.

Kate Fox, the social anthropologist who put the quirks and hidden conditions of the English under a microscope, is back with more biting insights about the nature of Englishness. This updated and revised edition of Watching the English - which over the last decade has become the unofficial guidebook to the English national character - features new and fresh insights on the unwritten rules and foibles of "squaddies," bikers, horse-riders, and more. Fox revisits a strange and fascinating culture, governed by complex sets of unspoken rules and bizarre codes of behavior. She demystifies the peculiar cultural rules that baffle us: the rules of weather-speak. The ironic-gnome rule. The reflex apology rule. The paranoid pantomime rule. Class anxiety tests. The roots of English self-mockery and many more. An international bestseller, Watching the English is a biting, affectionate, insightful and often hilarious look at the English and their society.
