Book English Political Thought

Download or read book English Political Thought written by J. W. Allen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1938. A study of the political doctrines and events which led to a hardening of lines between the Royalists and the Parliamentarians. "From the March of 1604, when James I met his first Parliament to the assembly of the Long Parliament in November 1640, there was going on a conflict between irreconcilable views concerning the constitution of government in England. It was concerned with what had been and with what was and, necessarily, with what should be." By 1640 the question soon would be "how stable government could ever again be established . . . But the confusion, if it produced little else of value, produced a ferment of thought." And this ferment has had an incalculable effect on the centuries which have followed. Among the many topics discussed, on the basis of firm knowledge and with reasonableness, are the King and the nature of his claim, the parliamentary opposition and its conceptions and the possibility of compromise, the approach to Toleration, Puritanism and the Laudian Church, and the final collapse of government.

Book British Political Thought in History Literature and Theory 1500 1800

Download or read book British Political Thought in History Literature and Theory 1500 1800 written by David Armitage and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-11-23 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of British political thought has been one of the most fertile fields of Anglo-American historical writing in the last half-century. David Armitage brings together an interdisciplinary and international team of authors to consider the impact of this scholarship on the study of early modern British history, English literature, and political theory. Leading historians survey the impact of the history of political thought on the 'new' histories of Britain and Ireland; eminent literary scholars offer novel critical methods attentive to literary form, genre, and language; and distinguished political theorists treat the relationship of history and theory in studies of rights and privacy. The outstanding examples of critical practice collected here will encourage the emergence of fresh research on the historical, critical, and theoretical study of the English-speaking world in the period around 1500–1800. This volume celebrates the contribution of the Folger Institute to British studies over many years.

Book English Political Theory

Download or read book English Political Theory written by Ivor John Carnegie Brown and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Political Theory To begin with defensive measures may savour of a guilty conscience, but there is nothing to be gained by denying the existence of an enemy. Political theory is undoubtedly regarded in certain quarters as an abstract and a barren subject, useful only for professors who live by taking in each other's ideas and destroying them in the wash. That, treated in a certain way, political theory is both abstract and barren it is idle to deny; that, sensibly handled with a common-sense attitude to the real values of social life, it is both a concrete and a fruitful study it is my purpose to maintain. Political theory, like political practice, has suffered from the excessive attention of lawyers; and these lawyers have narrowed down to such an academic question as the nature of sovereignty what should be the widest and most vital of inquiries. For we are to ask not only what is the origin of society or community, but also what is its purpose and how that purpose can be most effectually realised. Book The Politics of Liberty in England and Revolutionary America

Download or read book The Politics of Liberty in England and Revolutionary America written by Lee Ward and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-07-26 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study locates the philosophical origins of the Anglo-American political and constitutional tradition in the philosophical, theological, and political controversies in seventeenth-century England. By examining the quarrel it identifies the source of modern liberal, republican and conservative ideas about natural rights and government in the seminal works of the Exclusion Whigs Locke, Sidney, and Tyrrell and their philosophical forebears Hobbes, Grotius, Spinoza, and Pufendorf. This study illuminates how these first Whigs and their diverse eighteenth-century intellectual heirs such as Bolingbroke, Montesquieu, Hume, Blackstone, Otis, Jefferson, Burke, and Paine contributed to the formation of Anglo-American political and constitutional theory in the crucial period from the Glorious Revolution through to the American Revolution and the creation of a distinctly American understanding of rights and government in the first state constitutions.
