Book English Landed Society in the Nineteenth Century

Download or read book English Landed Society in the Nineteenth Century written by F.M.L. Thompson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-19 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2006. This book contributes towards a more just appreciation of the relative importance of the different major social groups in the life of the country. It deals in the main with the economic history of the landed interest, and with its role as a social group and includes much agrarian and some industrial history as seen from the landowners' point of view. The first seven chapters of the book aim to present an analysis and description of the main elements in the institutions and way of life of the landed classes, suggesting their significance for society at large, and emphasizing the forces of change which were at work within an order which in many ways presented a remarkably stable appearance to the outside world. The last five chapters take up the theme of change and examine the dynamic elements in the economic social and political life of the group, in a sequence of chronological subdivisions of the century and a half with which this book is concerned.

Book The Emergence of a Ruling Order

Download or read book The Emergence of a Ruling Order written by James M. Rosenheim and published by Longman Publishing Group. This book was released on 1998 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important new study considers how the English landed gentry secured their position of enduring wealth and political power across the century which saw their rise from a provincial social order to the national ruling elite. Dr. Rosenheim explores all aspects of the life of the landed order, whether in the country or in London. He looks at birth, education, marriage, and mobility (both physical and social); at religion and Jacobitism; and at public life in both shire and metropolis. He considers landowners as estate managers and investors; as magistrates and politicians; as students and European travellers; and as spouses and parents; and he explores their involvement in trade and commerce, as well as the exploitation of their estates. The result - integrating social, political, cultural and economic history, and making wide use of specific case studies - offers a searching analysis of the subject. It is also a vivid and entertaining portrait of one of the major formative influences on English culture and on the English landscape.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Society in the Eighteenth Century: As Influenced From Oversea Similarly were ramifications of world empire responsible for changes in the character and struc ture of the nation. Here, too, the lessons learned in business were responsible for the development of metropolitan standards, of civic and national con sciousness, and of a new morality in political life. The influx of wealth eventually benefited the entire nation and happily resulted in a higher standard of living. Furthermore the pursuit of wealth which was open to all helped to break down the barriers of caste, to level class distinction and to rebuild on the foundation of the old, a social structure which was comparatively mobile and fluid. Finally the growth of a new spirit of philanthropy at home and abroad may be traced to England's awakened responsibility for the moral and religious welfare of its world empire.
