Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Grammar Schools in the Reign of Queen Elizabeth The history of English secondary education in the sixteenth century reveals two movements, one of destruction, the other of reconstruction. The former movement reached its climax in the destruction of the monasteries, guilds, and chantries, since with these there perished a very large number of the institutions of English secondary education. But before this climax had been reached, the latter movement had exhibited itself in the foundation of such schools as St. Paul's and the City Grammar School of Bristol. While the former movement was spending itself, the latter continued to grow. Close upon the destruction of the monasteries and their schools followed the refoundation of the cathedrals and the cathedral schools by Henry VIII., while simultaneously with the destruction of the guild and chantry schools occurred the foundation of increasing numbers of independent schools. It is with these independent schools as they existed in the reign of Elizabeth that the present study is concerned, since it is hoped that through the study of the facts concerning their foundation and support, their government, their teaching staff, their curricula, and the school life of their pupils there may result not only a description of the schools as they existed at that period, but also the discovery of at least some of the chief characteristics of the education and educational institutions of this reconstructive movement in the English secondary education of the Elizabethan period. Excerpt: ... wth the and the holie ghoste be rendred all praise glorie and matie for eur and eur Amen."14 Made possible by the gifts and endowments of many men and organizations and maintained through the labors of governors and masters, the influences just described were such as tended to develop in the grammar-school boys of this period a peculiar type of character moulded by Morality and Religion as well as by Scholarship. As an ideal, the realization of this type of character in the lives of deserving boys furnished the most powerful motives for the foundation and maintenance of the schools; as a standard, it was applied to determine the type of master who was to control as well as to be a part of these influences; while.as the chief educational aim of this period, it determined both content and method of the curriculum of the English Grammar Schools of the Elizabethan Age. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Penrith And Westmorland Antiquarian and Archaeological Society. At that time the material at my disposal consisted merely of the Register Book of the School, begun in 1699, by Dr. Todd. By following up various clues other material came to light, which considerably increased its bulk and served to give an interesting picture not only of the history of the school itself, but also of the town and neighbourhood of Penrith. There are still, unfortunately, many gaps, but, considering the turbulent history of the district and the mismanagement, at various times, of the. This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Of the Free Grammar School of Queen Elizabeth at Wakefield, Founded A. D. 1591: Written in Commemoration of the 300th Anniversary of Its Foundation The following pages represent an attempt to give a plain and unadorned record of what may be considered to be of greatest interest and importance in the History of this School. They have been put together at spasmodic intervals, when a busy Schoolmaster, in these exacting years at the close of the bustling nineteenth century, has found a few available leisure hours after his School duties have been accomplished. About six years ago my attention was drawn to the Kennett MSS. in the British Museum, where may be found much of the early history of the School, and a copy of its Statutes, all carefully transcribed from the books of the Governors by Bishop White Kennett during a visit to Wakefield in July, 1724. From this foundation the superstructure has been raised, by the assistance of the Governors of the School, and the kind help of many friends and acquaintances, some of whom would have executed the work in a far more efficient manner, as they would have been able to draw from a much greater store of antiquarian knowledge, and have employed a much abler pen. Foremost amongst these must be mentioned the Rev. J. H. Lupton, M.A., Sur-Master of S. Paul's School, and author of "Wakefield Worthies," without whose encouragement this book would hardly have been attempted, and upon whose aid I have always been able to count. I have also to acknowledge the stimulus given to all my efforts by Mr. J. W. Walker, F.S.A., the author of "The Cathedral Church of Wakefield," who has carefully read over the proof-sheets, and supplied me with many useful details. Mr. J. H. Wice, lately Spokesman of the Governors, has also put me and my readers under an obligation by undertaking a similar task of revision. Book The Old Grammar Schools

Download or read book The Old Grammar Schools written by Foster Watson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-09 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1968. At the time when the English Grammar Schools were most flourishing, namely the 17th century, they subserved a practical national aim. Puritan England, by no means concerned with the teaching of the Classics per se, looked to the Grammar Schools for that subsidiary help which the study of Latin, Greek and Hebrew afforded to the intensive study of the Scriptures and pietas literata. The question this study looks at is related to the loss of these classic subjects in Secondary schools and therefore to measure in the long-run, the value of our new ‘Secondary’ Schools relatively to the old Grammar Schools—rather than the comprehensiveness of the list of subjects included in the new curricula.
