Book English Estate Forestry Classic Reprint

Download or read book English Estate Forestry Classic Reprint written by A. C. Forbes and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Estate Forestry This book contains the opinions and impressions of a practical forester on a few of the more important subjects connected with English Estate Forestry. In its pages an attempt has been made to place the position of Estate Forestry clearly before the reader, and to indicate a few directions in which improvements are possible. The Author feels, probably in common with many practical foresters, that English Forestry is sufficiently distinct from Continental, or even Scotch Forestry to entitle it to be regarded as a separate subject, and that the non-recognition of this fact has led to a great deal of misconception in the minds of many, who are more or less anxious to see English Forestry raised to a higher level. This book is intended to be suggestive rather than instructive to the practical forester. There is little in its pages but what he already knows, and possibly a great deal with which he will not agree. But as a more or less faithful record of individual experience it is offered as a small contribution to forestry literature, which, if it does not enrich, it will not, it is hoped, disgrace. To the woodland proprietor it may also prove more suggestive than instructive. He will, at any rate, find its few recommendations in accord with his own interests, and that both Sport and Landscape Effect have been dealt with sympathetically. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Forestry and Its Bearing on the Improvement of Estates Ince I wrote the preface to the Third Edition S twelve years ago, Forestry, as a profession, has passed out of its atrophy to a period of national activity and usefulness. The nation's call for an uh limited supply of timber has resulted in the depletion of vast areas Of our limited forest lands. The lessons to be learnt from this are manifold, and I hope they may be treated so seriously and effectively as to allay the natural anxiety as to future supplies of timber. Download or read book The Strength and Decay of Nations written by Giles Andrew Daubeny and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-07-23 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Strength and Decay of Nations: I. Forestry; II. British Forestry; Being Two Essays With Notes The science of forestry, however, has only been known for some two hundred years, yet its great importance is seen when we consider what takes place in every country as it becomes civilised. Whilst in barbarous times men are content to live upon the wild fruits of the forests and plains, the spoils of the chase, the food to be obtained by trapping and fishing, and what can be wrested from neighbouring tribes or travel lers by force of arms; as soon as they gain ideas of civilisation they clear a space amidst the trees of the forest to build a collection of dwellings and to grow corn and other food and provender in greater quantity than can be conveniently gathered in the wild state. Wood, moreover, is required for firing, to build houses, boats, and for many other purposes; so it comes to pass that the area around the settlement denuded of trees becomes greater and greater. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forestry, Vol. 10: A Journal of Forest and Estate Manangement Whilst pleading for oral instruction on behalf of the young forester, we were first to give him special teaching through the press, and we do not propose to vacate the position. Material of permanent educational value will continue to appear in these pages. And, indeed, the programme of our greatest Forestry Schools may suggest the scope and limits of such material. Correspondence and questions from earnest students are solicited. Dining the last three months, our name has been much in the mouths of that general public which so largely enjoyed the benefits of the International Forestry Exhibition. The building in which much of that interest was concentrated, is now dismantled. But Forestry hopes to deepen a permanent interest in the topics it illustrated, as well as in others of special interest to landed proprietors and woodmen. After the playing of the Queen's anthem, and at the call of the large audience who had that day numbered over Sir James gibson-craig closed the International Forestry Exhibition of 1884, on the evening of the second Saturday of October, by a short speech. The financial results of the Exhibition, as they affect the guarantors, are not yet known. But whatever other direct consequences may supervene, over half a million visitors have been interested in forestry, while experts from nearly every country have compared ideas, and elicited new thoughts soon, we hope, to be made apparent either in manufactures or commerce. Without any invidious distinctions, we must refer to the assiduous courtesy of Mr. Cadell, the Secretary, who has filled a difficult position in an admirable way. Book A Short Manual of Forest Management Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Short Manual of Forest Management Classic Reprint written by H. Jackson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-15 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short Manual of Forest Management The object of the present manual is to present a brief and simplified text-book on Forest Management, based on a purely practical foundation. The standard works on this subject some times present f0r the student, and especially for the public a rather formidable appearance, and contain an exposition of high theory a part of which at the present time is seldom, if ever, capable of practical application to the forest conditions of our own country, or of our possessions in other parts of the world. An attempt is made therefore to produce a simplified practical review of this subject from which are eliminated all reference to'advanced theories which are not at present sus ceptible of practical application, and all other matters of purely academic interest. Some confusion has resulted, it is thought, in the past, from attempting to embrace in one study such diverse conditions as obtain in the most intensively worked continental forests which have been highly organised for genera tions, in the vast forests of India which are still generally in their natural state of the utmost irregularity, and thirdly in the small estate woodlands and plantations of our own country. An attempt is therefore made now to discriminate between such different types of forest with a View to elucidate and facilitate the pre paration of suitable working-plans for each type. Use has been made of the following standard works on Forest Management: Manual of Forestry, vol. III. Sir Wm. Schlich; The Forester, J. Nisbet; The Practice of Forestry, P. T. Maw; British Estate Forestry, A. C. Forbes; Forest Working Plans in India, W. E. D'arcy. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
