Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from England Under the Stuarts Perhaps the period during which the conditions of life under went least observable change is to be found in the years 1603 40. During this time.no great alteration took place in institu tions, in ideas or in religion, comparable to the changes of the preceding and of the following age. The English whom James came from Edinburgh to rule were the same English as those whom Pym, thirty-seven years later, took upon himself to lead; the England which, resting from the great Elizabethan labour of State construction and State defence, produced during a few brief years a literature of human life perfect in unity as in vigour, was the same England which, when presented with different problems, flew into fratricidal factions. In the long intervening years a deep change of temper had indeed takenplace, due to great political events. But in society, in economics, in the religious convictions of' the people, it is difficult to name any great differences between the England of Shakespeare and the England of Pym. During these years, in Virginia as well as in New England, the fundamental liberties of the people were threatened by the encroachments Of the Crown, and were saved only by the heroic resistance Of the House Of Burgesses. Since these events have been greatly neglected by historians, and since abundant source material bearing upon them is found in the Public Record Office, the author has attempted to describe them in detail. Book A Short History of England Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Short History of England Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Charles McLean Andrews and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of England, Vol. 1 of 2 In this brief history of England I have endeavored to present within the compass of about four hundred pages the main features of England's story from the earliest times to the present day. It retains, on a smaller scale, the essential characteristics of my larger work, with many omissions of details and some additions, chiefly of a geographical and biographical character. The aim of the book is to be instructive as well as interesting. In it I have tried to tell a clear and simple story, avoiding technical expressions, and yet passing over no important features of the history that are necessary for the proper understanding of the subject. The narrative is made as continuous as possible, that the reader may follow in unbroken sequence the thread of the story. It is accompanied with a large number of newly selected illustrations, and an ample supply of maps and chronological tables. The elaborate bibliographies contained in the larger work have been omitted, and only a brief but selective list of the best books of moderate length has been retained. The history has been brought down to date in matters of scholarship as well as chronology, and contains many opinions and statements not to be found in the larger work. The book traces in rapid survey the development of the people and institutions of England from Anglo-Saxon times to the close of the year 1911, and shows by what steps the primitive organization of a semi-tribal people has been transformed into the highly complicated political and social structure of the United Kingdom and the British Empire. Book The First Two Stuarts and the Puritan Revolution 1603 1660 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The First Two Stuarts and the Puritan Revolution 1603 1660 Classic Reprint written by Samuel Rawson Gardiner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-17 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Two Stuarts and the Puritan Revolution, 1603-1660 The maps have been constructed from Clarendon and other familiar sources, and, though they may be incorrect in some points, I hope they will give a clearer idea of the course of the war than is to be gathered from any written narrative. The first will show how far the statement is true that the wealthiest portion of England attached itself to the Parliament, and brings out distinctly the enormous comparative wealth of London. The calculations on which it is founded are derived from a statement in Rushworth, corrected in the instance of the County of Durham, from the original entry in the Privy Council Register. The second map may be said to express the natural strength of the King's party; for, though Oxford was not held by him at the actual commencement of the war, it took his side too vigorously to be counted as a mere enforced accession of strength. The third map shows the King's fortunes at their highest point, just before the Scottish army invaded England, and the fourth gives the position just before the New Model army set out to combat the King. As regarded Henrietta herself, she took no pains to disguise her partiality for the Prince: the state of her feelings, however, will be best discovered by the following romantic incident, as related by Lord Kensington in one of his letters to Charles. The Princess, it seems, had conceived a passionate longing to obtain a sight of a miniature of Charles, which Lord Kensington was in the habit of wearing round his neck for though others, writes the ambassador, as the Queen and Princesses, would Open it, and consider it, the which ever brought forth admira tion from them, yet durst not this poor young lady look any otherwise on it than afar off, whose heart was nearer unto it than any of the others who did most gaze upon it.
