This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from England's Battles by Sea and Land, From the Commencement of the Great French Revolution to the Present Time: With a Retrospective View of the Celebrated Epochs of British Military History, Including Our Indian Campaigns, and the Present Expedition Against Russian Aggression in the East Such is the design of the Work to which we invite a nation's attention in the time of strife, of self-denial, and (it may be, to some extent) of peril. Is it not wise, we ask, to review past struggles, and to glean from them the lessons they yield for our guidance now? The unthinking clamours of a people have sometimes driven governments into unnecessary wars; while, at other times, the fear of increased taxation has generated such a love of peace, as to endanger the national respect. With a people better informed with regard to its history, and the causes of the storm now about to pass over Europe, this will not be again. Book excerpt: The men and events that turned the map 'red' for the Queen Empress This is an excellent and readable account of the British and Imperial Armies at war during the great years of Empire. Accessible and entertaining it will satisfy the casual reader and the more serious student of military history alike. The author presents a comprehensive overview of the conflicts of the era, but has also imaginatively complimented these with anecdotes of the participants. These illuminate the history with vignettes of action and courage which bring the regiments and their men, their various exotic enemies and the battlefields of many lands vividly to life. These include the final battles for the British dominance of the Indian sub-continent including the First Afghan War 1839-42, the conquest of Scinde 1843, the Gwalior War 1843 and the First and Second Sikh Wars 1845-49. The 1850's brought conflict with Russia in the Crimea, a mutiny in the Indian Army, a campaign in Persia and collision with the ancient empire of China. Ferocious battles with the Maoris as New Zealand was settled by Europeans followed in 1863 before the race to claim Africa pitted British troops against an unbalanced Emperor in Abyssinia, a despot in West Africa, the mighty martial tribe of the Zulus and pitched battles in the sands of the north against the Mahdi and his army of religious zealots. In Afghanistan the tribes of the burning Northwest Frontier remained in turmoil as the Great Game was played out. The book concludes-as the 19th century itself drew to a close-with the epic account of how a British Army marched along the banks of the Nile to revenge the death of Gordon and re-conquer the Sudan.

Book Up Among the Pandies

Download or read book Up Among the Pandies written by Vivian Dering Majendie and published by . This book was released on 2007-07 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An outstanding account of the campaign for the fall of Lucknow This curiously titled book-for it still bears its original appellation-suggests a light hearted view of the experience of warfare. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. Leonaur constantly seeks to publish unusual and interesting books of military history, but this book is remarkable on several counts. Firstly, it is a fine account of the final stages of the Indian Mutiny told from the perspective of a young British officer who was actively engaged on the campaign and a participant in many engagements. It has not been available for many years and its republication now is made all the more fitting in this, the 150th anniversary year of the Indian Mutiny itself. It is much more. In researching the Leonaur commemorative book Mutiny: 1857, Up Among the Pandies came to the notice of Leonaur's editors. It revealed itself to be a remarkable work of authorship irrespective of its subject matter. Majendie brings to his writing a fabulous talent for close observation of the detail of events, conversations and the sights he was witnessing that puts this book belongs in a class above the usual military memoir. It is an account of warfare and the experience of war that misses nothing. The reader will see the avenging British Army on campaign, the dust in the morning light and the sweat of exertion running down the faces of its men. The voice of the common soldier is reported without editing for Victorian niceties and combat is described in savage and realistic clarity-including the frequent perfunctory executions in all their ghastly variety. This is a vital book of war as fought by the British Army of the mid-nineteenth century, but in truth it is also an essential book of war that will enthral military historians and general readers alike.
