Download or read book Toward Another Shore written by Aileen Kelly and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thought-provoking book, an internationally acclaimed scholar writes about the passion for ideology among nineteenth- and twentieth-century Russian intellectuals and about the development of sophisticated critiques of ideology by a continuing minority of Russian thinkers inspired by libertarian humanism. Aileen Kelly sets the conflict between utopian and anti-utopian traditions in Russian thought within the context of the shift in European thought away from faith in universal systems and "grand narratives" of progress toward an acceptance of the role of chance and contingency in nature and history. In the current age, as we face the dilemma of how to prevent the erosion of faith in absolutes and final solutions from ending in moral nihilism, we have much to learn from the struggles, failures, and insights of Russian thinkers, Kelly says. Her essays--some of them tours de force that have appeared before as well as substantial new studies of Turgenev, Herzen, and the Signposts debate--illuminate the insights of Russian intellectuals into the social and political consequences of ideas of such seminal Western thinkers as Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, and Darwin. Download or read book Another Shore written by Roger Legg and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-01-17 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since Boy Scout days Roger Legg has obtained great pleasure from long-distance walking. On the whole he does not like following footpath routes designated by Acts of Parliament, nor following books of instructions on how to get from A to B ... proceed for one mile; turn left at the farm gate; be careful of the marsh at the bottom of hill ..... It all sounds a bit like joining the army and often fails to get the walker off the beaten track. Rather he prefers to plan his own route, to use map and compass. This book is a record of six journeys which he made in the British Isles during the years 1980 to 1991. He hopes the reader will enjoy his adventures; as that great walker George Borrow said many years ago: ..... these British Islands ... where more strange things are every day occurring, whether in road or street, house or dingle

Download or read book Strangers from a Different Shore written by Ronald T. Takaki and published by eBookIt.com. This book was released on 2012-11 with total page 1019 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an extraordinary blend of narrative history, personal recollection, & oral testimony, the author presents a sweeping history of Asian Americans. He writes of the Chinese who laid tracks for the transcontinental railroad, of plantation laborers in the canefields of Hawaii, of "picture brides" marrying strangers in the hope of becoming part of the American dream. He tells stories of Japanese Americans behind the barbed wire of U.S. internment camps during World War II, Hmong refugees tragically unable to adjust to Wisconsin's alien climate & culture, & Asian American students stigmatized by the stereotype of the "model minority." This is a powerful & moving work that will resonate for all Americans, who together make up a nation of immigrants from other shores.

Download or read book Coastal Britain England and Wales written by Stuart Fisher and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-04-18 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When all her islands are taken into consideration, the British coastline spans almost 8,000 miles, which is longer than both Brazil's and Mexico's. From the clear blue waters of serene Cornish bays to the tempestuous seas around rugged Pembrokeshire headlands, this new book journeys around the varied shorelines of England and Wales to complete the most comprehensive survey ever taken. Stuart Fisher, bestselling author of the similarly comprehensive Canals of Britain, visits all the places of interest along the entire coastline of England and Wales: from remote countryside to modern cities, exploring history and heritage, striking architecture and dramatic engineering, wildlife, wonderful flora and fauna, art and literature. His journey takes him from industrial hubs to small villages and fishing communities, providing a keen insight into what makes each stretch of Britain's shoreline unique and special. Evocative and often dramatic colour photographs help capture the great variety of the coast, and maps, book covers, stamps and local artefacts help convey the character of each area. This comprehensive and absorbing survey is a treasure trove of interest and knowledge for walkers, cyclists, boaters, holidaymakers and indeed anyone with an interest in coastal Britain.

Download or read book Journeys to the Other Shore written by Roxanne L. Euben and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2008-07-01 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contemporary world is increasingly defined by dizzying flows of people and ideas. But while Western travel is associated with a pioneering spirit of discovery, the dominant image of Muslim mobility is the jihadi who travels not to learn but to destroy. Journeys to the Other Shore challenges these stereotypes by charting the common ways in which Muslim and Western travelers negotiate the dislocation of travel to unfamiliar and strange worlds. In Roxanne Euben's groundbreaking excursion across cultures, geography, history, genre, and genders, travel signifies not only a physical movement across lands and cultures, but also an imaginative journey in which wonder about those who live differently makes it possible to see the world differently. In the book we meet not only Herodotus but also Ibn Battuta, the fourteenth-century Moroccan traveler. Tocqueville's journeys are set against a five-year sojourn in nineteenth-century Paris by the Egyptian writer and translator Rifa'a Rafi' al-Tahtawi, and Montesquieu's novel Persian Letters meets with the memoir of an East African princess, Sayyida Salme. This extraordinary book shows that curiosity about the unknown, the quest to understand foreign cultures, critical distance from one's own world, and the desire to remake the foreign into the familiar are not the monopoly of any single civilization or epoch. Euben demonstrates that the fluidity of identities, cultures, and borders associated with our postcolonial, globalized world has a long history--one shaped not only by Western power but also by an Islamic ethos of travel in search of knowledge.
