Download or read book Probable Tomorrows written by Marvin Cetron and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 1997-05-15 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating look at near-future advances, inventions, products, services, and everyday conveniences that will change how we live and work. Marvin Cetron and Owen Davies explore these changes and the impact they will have on everyday life. For example, by the year 2010: -Personal computers will offer the power of today's supermachines and artificial intelligence. -A telecommunications network will supply the world with services from the contents of the Library of Congress to pornographic videos in Cantonese. -The United States-reversing a decades-old trend-will link its major cities with hig-speed railroads. -Airplanes will be capable of leaping halfway around the world in just two hours. -Consumer goods will be produced at prices so low the poor of tomorrow could live as well as the rich of today. -Scientists will have learned to purge the air of pollution, closing up the Antarctic ozone hole and ending the threat of global warming. -Heavy industries can move into space, so that Earth can recover from our past environmental follies. -Dramatic advances in gene mapping and organ transplants will extend the healthy human life span well beyond the century mark. Science and technology have dominated life in developed countries since the Industrial Revolution. In the twenty-first century, the will change it almost beyond recognition. Probable Tomorrows tells us how.
Download or read book Tomorrow s Transportation written by Malinda Miller and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-10-21 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history, humans have been finding and developing ever-faster modes of transportation — moving from horses to the cars and high-speed jets of today. We have been very successful in our search for faster transportation, but it has come at a price. Our vehicles have all had an effect on the natural environment. The good news is there are a growing number of people devoting their lives to solving environmental issues related to transportation. The young adults of today will be the job force of tomorrow, so choosing a career that will best fit with the needs of the changing world will be important to job satisfaction and a successful life. With the vast array of career and job options, it will also be important for young adults to understand which work will be the best match for their interests, talents, goals, and personality types. Certain careers are expected to gain importance within the early decades of the twenty-first century. The opportunities for jobs related to "green" transportation are expected to increase at a faster than average rate as the world looks to repair damages already done to the environment and prevent new problems. The future of the planet is dependent on the development of cleaner and greener forms of transportation. If you choose a career in green transportation, you can help put us on the road to a better world!
Download or read book Educating Tomorrow s Engineers written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Science and Technology Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2013-02-08 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the UK we teach young people to become computer users and consumers rather than programmers and software engineers. This is creating a chronic skills gap in ICT. We need around 82,000 engineers and technicians just to deal with retirements up to 2016 and 830,000 SET professionals by 2020. On the plus side, the Government's proposal to include computer science as a fourth science option to count towards the EBac is welcomed. The Committee also welcomes the EBac's focus on attainment of mathematics and science GCSEs but is concerned that subjects such as Design and Technology (D&T) might be marginalised. A Technical Baccalaureate (TechBac) is being designed but if it is to be a success, schools should be incentivised to focus on the TechBac by making it equivalent to the EBac. Reforms to vocational education following the Wolf Review meant that Level 2 of the Engineering Diploma, a qualification highly regarded, would count as equivalent to one GCSE despite requiring curriculum time and effort equivalent to several GCSEs. The Engineering Diploma, however, is currently being redesigned as four separate qualifications. The Committee also expressed concerns over the Department for Education's (DfE) lack of clarity on its research budget, and use of evidence in decision-making. The DfE needs to place greater focus on gathering evidence before changes to qualifications are made, and must leave sufficient time for evidence to be gathered on the effectiveness of policies before introducing further change. The possibility of gathering evidence from randomised controlled trials (RCTs) should be seriously considered
Download or read book Tomorrow s Systems Engineering written by Howard Eisner and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-10-12 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at systems engineering now and comments on the future. It notes the signs of deepening our understanding of the field which includes, digital engineering, interactive model-based systems, decision support frameworks, and points to a grand unified theory. The book also suggests how the systems engineer can be a better designer and architect. Offering commentaries regarding how the field of systems engineering might evolve over the next couple of decades, Tomorrow’s Systems Engineering: Commentaries on the Profession looks at the potential opportunities that might lie ahead rather than making predictions for the future of the field. The book allows the reader to prepare for the future in terms of technical interest as well as competitiveness and suggests opportunities that could be significant and useful for planning actions in the careers of future systems engineers. Discussions of improvements in how we develop and use software that can help to facilitate and protect overall IT capability within the system design and system architecture are also included. This book is for systems engineers and software engineers who wish to think now about the directions the field might take in the next two decades.

Download or read book Transportation Engineering and Planning Volume I written by Tschangho John Kim and published by EOLSS Publications. This book was released on 2009-04-15 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transportation Engineering and Planning is a component of Encyclopedia of Physical Sciences, Engineering and Technology Resources in the global Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS), which is an integrated compendium of twenty one Encyclopedias. The Theme on Transportation Engineering and Planning presents the readers with diverse sources of information and knowledge about transportation engineering and planning, to help ensure that informed actions are compatible with sustainable world development. It begins with a historical analysis of transportation development, since an understanding of how transportation technologies developed is a prerequisite for understanding issues involved in transportation systems, and for developing sound policy analysis. Next, the various chapters analyze transportation problems, discusses the state of public policy addressing those problems, considers the causes and effects of changes in demand for mobility as the socio-economic environment changes, and then deals with the fundamental questions related to transportation. These two volumes are aimed at the following a wide spectrum of audiences from the merely curious to those seeking in-depth knowledge: University and College students Educators, Professional practitioners, Research personnel and Policy analysts, managers, and decision makers and NGOs.
