This innovative and practical resource, for teachers of students aged 5-13 provides: o a programme to promote gender equality and inclusivity in schools and colleges o a rationale for the programme based on social justice o a practical set of classroom activities to implement the programme The book combines the talents and commitment of two leading authors to provide an ′action inquiry′ methodology - engaging students and staff in the processes of investigating what is currently happening, and planning, implementing and reviewing improvements. This contributes to the development of the school as a self-evaluating organisation, which listens to the voice of the child. The programme supports teachers and other school staff in developing as reflective practitioners, and children and young people in developing as reflective learners. It can also be used to engage schools and colleges in joining the UNICEF ′Rights Respecting′ programme which is demonstrating positive results. ′A real strength of the resource is the inclusion of practical activities that have been carefully designed for pupils. Download or read book Educating Tomorrow written by Angela Thody and published by Juta and Company Ltd. This book was released on 2000 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is well accepted that education needs to be equalised along gender lines. However, until the management of education is also gender sensitive, that content cannot expect to be effectively communicated. This is the premise of this groundbreaking book. It addresses gender issues and management practices in education, by critically examining both successes and failures drawn from a number of African countries. It proposes ways of improving the management of education to focus on women - who have hitherto been left out of the mainstream of educational and training practices. It throws a uniquely African light on an issue that goes to the heart of the process of democratisation. In order to empower the girl child in the new South Africa and in Africa, the patriarchal and parochial structures that exist within the African educational paradigm need to be broken down and replaced. This would address problems such as: why women are discouraged from certain fields of studies, like sciences; the effect that interactions in learning situations can have on the achievement and attainment of female students; and the critical necessity of educating and training girls in rural Africa. The book speaks to the heart of the administrative processes within the education framework and shows how the way classes are structured or materials selected needs to be adapted in order to correct the present imbalance. It was created and developed with the aim of seeking out the best education management practices, finding common analyses from these and using them to develop guidelines for future education management.

Book Engendering Rationalities

Download or read book Engendering Rationalities written by Nancy Tuana and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2001-09-27 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engendering Rationalities brings together theorists whose work has been foundational to the development of feminist investigations of reason, objectivity, and knowledge with the work of scholars who build up and extend their insights. Contributors not only question standard conceptions of truth, objectivity, and our realist conceptions of the relationships between human knowledge and the world, but also offer rich and exciting alternatives to traditional theories that both arise out of and are compatible with feminist concerns. The book provides more adequate models of rationality that include the epistemic significance of a variety of subjective factors such as our specific cultural and social locations including sex, race, ethnicity, class, etc., and our personal commitments, desires, and interests.

Book Engendered Encounters

Download or read book Engendered Encounters written by Margaret D. Jacobs and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this interdisciplinary study of gender, cross-cultural encounters, and federal Indian policy, Margaret D. Jacobs explores the changing relationship between Anglo-American women and Pueblo Indians before and after the turn of the century. During the late nineteenth century, the Pueblos were often characterized by women reformers as barbaric and needing to be "uplifted" into civilization. By the 1920s, however, the Pueblos were widely admired by activist Anglo-American women, who challenged assimilation policies and worked hard to protect the Pueblos? "traditional" way of life. ø Deftly weaving together an analysis of changes in gender roles, attitudes toward sexuality, public conceptions of Native peoples, and federal Indian policy, Jacobs argues that the impetus for this transformation in perception rests less with a progressively tolerant view of Native peoples and more with fundamental shifts in the ways Anglo-American women saw their own sexuality and social responsibilities.

Book Gender Science and Mathematics

Download or read book Gender Science and Mathematics written by L. H. Parker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the Western world, the relationship between gender, science and math ematics has emerged as critical in a variety of contexts. In tertiary institutions, the study of "gender issues", frequently with reference to science and mathematics, is of central significance to many disciplines. Gender studies are being offered as sepa rate courses or parts of existing courses in preservice and postgraduate teacher edu cation, women's studies, technology studies and policy studies. In addition, in the broader context of education at all levels from primary/elementary through to higher, concerned policy-makers and practitioners frequently focus on the interaction of gender, science and mathematics in their attempts to reform and improve education for all students. In all of these contexts, there is an urgent need for suitable texts, both to provide resources for teachers and students and to inform policy-makers and practitioners. This book has been developed specifically to meet this need. It is designed to be used throughout the world in a variety of tertiary courses and by policy-makers concerned with activities which interface with the gender/science/mathematics rela tionship. It provides examples which illustrate vividly the rich field from which practitioners and policy-makers in this area now can draw. Its particular appeal will stem from its practical approach and creative future perspective, the international renown of the authors and the generalisability of the recent research and thinking presented in each of the chapters.
