Book Physics of Radiation Effects in Crystals

Download or read book Physics of Radiation Effects in Crystals written by R. A. Johnson and published by North Holland. This book was released on 1986 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physics of Radiation Effects in Crystals'' is presented in two parts. The first part covers the general background and theory of radiation effects in crystals, including the theory describing the generation of crystal lattice defects by radiation, the kinetic approach to the study of the disposition of these defects and the effects of the diffusion of these defects on alloy compositions and phases. Specific problems of current interest are treated in the second part and include anisotropic dimensional changes in x-uranium, zirconium and graphite, acceleration of thermal creep in reactor materials, and radiation damage of semiconductors and superconductors.

Book Radiation Damage Quantification in Elemental Copper Using Wigner Energy Storage

Download or read book Radiation Damage Quantification in Elemental Copper Using Wigner Energy Storage written by Ki-Jana Carter and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiation damage in materials can cause critical components in fission and fusion reactors to fail with potentially catastrophic consequences. Radiation damage quantification is essential for understanding, predicting, and preventing such failures. The current unit of radiation damage, displacements per atom (DPA), is not a measurable quantity, and it is known to be an inaccurate measure of radiation damage. This project aims to quantify radiation damage accurately and measurably by characterizing the storage of energy in radiation-induced material defects, known as Wigner energy storage. In order to gain an atomistic understanding of radiation damage, the irradiation and calorimetry of elemental copper were simulated using molecular dynamics code. A custom defect analysis script was used to determine the energy stored as a function of irradiation energy and defect type. Wigner energy peaks were clearly visible in the calorimetry data, indicating that Wigner energy measurement is a plausible technique for quantifying radiation damage. Future work should focus on achieving more realistic heating rates and measuring Wigner energy storage experimentally using fast scanning calorimetry.

Book Inorganic Scintillators for Detector Systems

Download or read book Inorganic Scintillators for Detector Systems written by Paul Lecoq and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-25 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition features new chapters highlighting advances in our understanding of the behavior and properties of scintillators, and the discovery of new families of materials with light yield and excellent energy resolution very close to the theoretical limit. The book focuses on the discovery of next-generation scintillation materials and on a deeper understanding of fundamental processes. Such novel materials with high light yield as well as significant advances in crystal engineering offer exciting new perspectives. Most promising is the application of scintillators for precise time tagging of events, at the level of 100 ps or higher, heralding a new era in medical applications and particle physics. Since the discovery of the Higgs Boson with a clear signature in the lead tungstate scintillating blocks of the CMS Electromagnetic Calorimeter detector, the current trend in particle physics is toward very high luminosity colliders, in which timing performance will ultimately be essential to mitigating pile-up problems. New and extremely fast light production mechanisms based on Hot-Intraband-Luminescence as well as quantum confinement are exploited for this purpose. Breakthroughs such as crystal engineering by means of co-doping procedures and selection of cations with small nuclear fragmentation cross-sections will also pave the way for the development of more advanced and radiation-hard materials. Similar innovations are expected in medical imaging, nuclear physics ecology, homeland security, space instrumentation and industrial applications. This second edition also reviews modern trends in our understanding and the engineering of scintillation materials. Readers will find new and updated references and information, as well as new concepts and inspirations to implement in their own research and engineering endeavors.

Book Radiation Damage in BaF2 Crystals

Download or read book Radiation Damage in BaF2 Crystals written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of radiation damage and recovery have been studied in BaF2 crystals exposed to 6°Co radiation. The change in optical transmission and scintillation light output have been measured as a function of dose up to 4.7 x 106 rad. Although some crystals exhibit a small change in transmission, a greater change in scintillation light output is observed. Several 25 cm long crystals whichhave been irradiated show large changes in both transmission and light output. Recovery from radiation damage has been studied as a function of time and exposure to UV light. A long lived radiation induced phosphorescence has been observed in all irradiated samples which is distinct from the standard fast and slow scintillation emissions. The emission spectrum of the phosphorescence has been measured and shown a peakat (approximately)330 nm, near the region of the slow scintillation component. Results are given on the dependence of the decay time of the phosphorescence with dose.

Book Radiation Damage in Cesium Iodide and Other Scintillating Crystals

Download or read book Radiation Damage in Cesium Iodide and Other Scintillating Crystals written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiation damage in scintillating crystals is discussed in terms of how it can affect the performance of crystals used in a high resolution electromagnetic calorimeter. An attempt is made to identify certain principle causes of damage and describe how these may affect various parameters such as light output, energy resolution and noise. A discussion of radiation damage in barium fluoride is given as an example of how these effects can be understood and how the radiation hardness of a given crystal can be improved. Radiation damage in doped and undoped cesium iodide is compared in order to distinguish between damage occurring in the undoped material and those which could be caused by dopants such as sodium or thallium. New results on radiation damage in both doped and undoped CsI are also discussed.
