Book Core Indicators for Determinants and Performance of the Electricity Sector in Developing Countries

Download or read book Core Indicators for Determinants and Performance of the Electricity Sector in Developing Countries written by Tooraj Jamasb and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2005 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "Since the early 1990s, substantial resources and efforts have been spent on implementing market-oriented electricity reforms in developing countries. While there are important sectoral, economic, and social dimensions involved in electricity reform, empirical analysis and evaluation of reforms have been of limited use for testing the economic rationale of reforms and policy advice. This may partly be attributed to a lack of generally accepted and measured indicators for monitoring the progress, impacts, and performance of reforms. In this paper the authors propose a set of indicators as a first step toward filling this gap and developing a coherent framework for studying electricity reform in developing countries that covers resource and institutional endowments, key reform steps, market structure, performance, and various impacts."--World Bank web site.

Book Variable Generation Flexible Demand

Download or read book Variable Generation Flexible Demand written by Fereidoon Sioshansi and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2020-11-15 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Variable Generation, Flexible Demand looks at a future in which power system researchers, operators and analysts need to predict variable renewable generation and schedule demand to match it. Contributors survey the significant expansion in the role of flexible demand in balancing supply and demand in conjunction with flexible generation in 'peaking plants' and energy storage as the proportion of variable renewable generation rises in many systems across the world. Supported with case studies, the book examines practical ways that demand flexibility can play a constructive role as more systems move towards higher levels of renewable generation in their electricity mix. - Examines practical ways that demand flexibility can play a constructive role in future energy systems - Reviews the vital role of market design, business models, enabling technologies, policies and regulation in implementation of flexible demand - Includes detailed case studies that address the role of flexible demand across transitioning power markets

Book Climate Impacts on Energy Systems

Download or read book Climate Impacts on Energy Systems written by Jane O. Ebinger and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2011 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "While the energy sector is a primary target of efforts to arrest and reverse the growth of greenhouse gas emissions and lower the carbon footprint of development, it is also expected to be increasingly affected by unavoidable climate consequences from the damage already induced in the biosphere. Energy services and resources, as well as seasonal demand, will be increasingly affected by changing trends, increasing variability, greater extremes and large inter-annual variations in climate parameters in some regions. All evidence suggests that adaptation is not an optional add-on but an essential reckoning on par with other business risks. Existing energy infrastructure, new infrastructure and future planning need to consider emerging climate conditions and impacts on design, construction, operation, and maintenance. Integrated risk-based planning processes will be critical to address the climate change impacts and harmonize actions within and across sectors. Also, awareness, knowledge, and capacity impede mainstreaming of climate adaptation into the energy sector. However, the formal knowledge base is still nascent?information needs are complex and to a certain extent regionally and sector specific. This report provides an up-to-date compendium of what is known about weather variability and projected climate trends and their impacts on energy service provision and demand. It discusses emerging practices and tools for managing these impacts and integrating climate considerations into planning processes and operational practices in an environment of uncertainty. It focuses on energy sector adaptation, rather than mitigation which is not discussed in this report. This report draws largely on available scientific and peer-reviewed literature in the public domain and takes the perspective of the developing world to the extent possible."

Book Management of Weather and Climate Risk in the Energy Industry

Download or read book Management of Weather and Climate Risk in the Energy Industry written by Alberto Troccoli and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-12-21 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meteorological and climate data are indeed essential both in day-to-day energy management and for the definition of production and distribution infrastructures. For instance, the supply of electricity to users can be disturbed by extreme meteorological events such as thunderstorms with unusually strong winds, severe icing, severe cold spells, sea level elevation associated with storm surges, floods ... To be protected against such events, it is not sufficient to act after they have taken place. It is necessary to identify their potential impacts precisely and assess the probability of their occurrence. This book shows that this can only be done through an enhanced dialogue between the energy community and the climate and meteorology community. This implies an in-depth dialogue between actors to define precisely what kind of data is needed and how it should be used. Météo-France has been in long-term cooperation with the energy sector, including the fields of electricity production and distribution. Drawing on this experience, it should be noted in this respect the importance of lo- term partnership between actors as exemplified here by the message of EDF.

Book Global Tracking Framework

Download or read book Global Tracking Framework written by United Nations and published by . This book was released on 2019-01-31 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report finds that, overall, the achievement of all three SDG 7 goals is not on track, and that efforts need to be accelerated if the UNECE region is to achieve the SDG 7 targets by 2030. The report further introduces the Energy for Sustainable Development framework that highlights energy as the golden thread linking energy-related Sustainable Development Goals across the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The framework analysis leads to the conclusion that a broader set of energy indicators is required to track energy for sustainable development comprehensively, including indicators covering climate, fossil fuels, and water related metrics, among others.
