Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this article we summarize recent results on the study of Au+Au collisions at 10.8A GeV/c obtained at the AGS by the E877 Collaboration. New results on the directed sideward flow are presented. In particular, the dependence of proton and pion production on the direction of the reaction plane will be discussed. It is shown that the sideward flow is mainly due to nucleons and that pions show little flow effects. Two-pion correlation functions are studied to derive the density at freeze-out. Further, we inspect the correlations as a function of the pion direction relative to the reaction plane. A dependence of the deduced source sizes on the pair direction and momentum is observed. The measured source sizes are compared to results obtained in lighter systems. Measured m[sub t] spectra of pions and kaons are also presented. The pion spectra show an enhancement at low m[sub t] similar to that observed in Si+Pb and which was attributed to[triangle] resonance excitation. However, in contrast to Si+Pb now a clear difference between the[pi][sup+] and[pi][sup -] spectra is seen. The K[sup+] spectra, which showed a very steep component over a small p[sub t] range in the previously studied Si+Pb reaction exhibit for Au+Au an unexpected structure at very low p[sub t].

Book excerpt: A quantitative model, based on hadronic physics and Monte Carlo cascading is applied to heavy ion collisions at BNL-AGS and BEVALAC energies. The model was found to be in excellent agreement with particle spectra where data previously existed, for Si beams, and was able to successfully predict the spectra where data was initially absent, for Au beams. For Si + Au collisions baryon densities of three or four times the normal nuclear matter density (?0) are seen in the theory, while for Au + Au collisions, matter at densities up to 10?0 is anticipated. The possibility that unusual states of matter may be created in the Au beams and potential signatures for its observation, in particular deuterons and collective flow, are considered.

This broad range of related topics allows the researcher attending the Workshop to be exposed to work that normally would be considered outside his/her field, but could po tentially add a new dimension to the understanding of his/her work. At Snowbird, we brought together experimentalists working with heavy ion beams from 10 MeV/nucleon up to 200 GeV /nucleon and theoretical physicists working in diverse areas ranging from antisymmetrized fermionic dynamics to perturbative quantum chromo dynamics. Fu ture work at RHIC was discussed also, with presentations from several of the experimen tal groups. In addition, several talks addressed issues of cross-disciplinary relevance, from the study of water-drop-collisions, to the multi-fragmentation of buckyballs. Clearly the field of nuclear dynamics has a bright future. The understanding of the nuclear equation of state in all of its manifestations is being expanded on all fronts both theoretically and experimentally. Book excerpt: We have employed the nearly 4[pi]-calorimetric coverage of the E877 apparatus in order to determine flow in different regions of pseudo-rapidity from the measured transverse energy in Au+Au collisions at 11.4 A·GeV/c. Signatures for the side-splash in the reaction plane at forward and backward rapidities have been established. Indications of a non-zero eccentricity of particles in the reaction plane at mid-rapidity are also found. These observations complement analyses deriving collective longitudinal motion from dN/dy-spectra of protons, kaons, and pions as well as collective transverse motion of the same particles from m{sub t}-spectra at midrapidity.
