Book Regional Perspectives on Farm Energy

Download or read book Regional Perspectives on Farm Energy written by Daniel Ciolkosz and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-06-14 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the characteristics and opportunities for farm energy in the northeast quadrant of the United States, with attention to energy use, strategic energy management, and energy production by solar, wind, biomass, and other means. Throughout, the distinct characteristics of the region and their impact on energy solutions are discussed, and the outlook for future energy strategies is considered. Farm energy production and use are topics of increasing interest, as the need for improved efficiency and the opportunity for sustainable energy production both drive agricultural enterprises to reduce energy use and pursue opportunities for renewable energy production and use on the farm. However, the unique regional characteristics of agriculture make it challenging to apply a single approach to all situations.

Book Agriculture as a Producer and Consumer of Energy

Download or read book Agriculture as a Producer and Consumer of Energy written by Joe L. Outlaw and published by Cabi. This book was released on 2005 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent concerns about energy security in the US have drawn greater attention to agriculture's role as a producer and consumer of energy. Agriculturally-derived energy sources such as ethanol, biodiesel, biomass, and windpower presently supply between 0.3% and 0.50% of the energy consumed in the US. Organized into two parts, the first section of this book examines agriculture's role as a producer and consumer of energy, the integration of biomass energy into the US energy systems, a policy overview, and outlooks for energy production and consumption. The second section is a compendium of current research including the economic viability of ethanol and biodiesel; energy conservation and efficiency in agriculture; new methods and technologies; and environmental impacts and considerations.

Book The Alliance of Bioenergy Production and Organic Farming

Download or read book The Alliance of Bioenergy Production and Organic Farming written by Torsten Siegmeier and published by kassel university press GmbH. This book was released on 2016-01-01 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current global energy needs and the effort to substitute fossil fuels have led to extensive production of biomass in agricultural systems for purposes of renewable energy generation. At the same time, energy cropping poses new threats to the sustainability of land use systems. Large-scale industrialized farming in general and intensive energy crop production in particular are increasingly drawing criticism from various stakeholders for their negative external effects. Organic farming systems alleviate the environmental burden of agricultural production by minimizing negative this food-energy-climate nexus a large-scale conversion of agricultural area to organic management seems infeasible. Against this backdrop, this dissertation examined interrelations and connections of organic agriculture and biomass energy systems in regard to three dimensions: (i) Scientific interest and publication structure, (ii) research topics and contents, and (iii) systemic implications of integrated bioenergy and organic farming systems in the case of farm biogas production in Germany.

Book Impacts of Higher Energy Prices on Agriculture and Rural Economies

Download or read book Impacts of Higher Energy Prices on Agriculture and Rural Economies written by United States Department of Agriculture and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agricultural production is sensitive to changes in energy prices, either through energy consumed directly or through energy-related inputs such as fertilizer. A number of factors can affect energy prices faced by U.S. farmers and ranchers, including developments in the oil and natural gas markets, and energy taxes or subsidies. Climate change policies could also affect energy prices as a result of taxes on emissions, regulated emission limits, or the institution of a market for emission reduction credits. Here we review the importance of energy in the agricultural sector and report the results of a case study on the economic implications for the farm sector of energy price increases that would arise from plausible, constructed greenhouse-gas-emission reduction scenarios. Higher energy-related production costs would generally lower agricultural output, raise prices of agricultural products, and reduce farm income, regardless of the reason for the energy price increase. Nonetheless, farm sector impacts were modest for the scenarios and time periods examined. We demonstrate the unique distribution of effects resulting from price (or cost) increases for different types of energy due to pricing their carbon content, as well as the relative use of energy in production of different agricultural commodities. Our analysis focuses on relatively short-term adjustments to higher energyrelated costs and does not include potential financial benefits from sequestering carbon or reduced climate change. Finally, we find that agricultural sector impacts on farming-dependent counties would not be substantial but would be potentially largest where education and employment levels are relatively low, while effects on rural communities due strictly to energy production adjustments would be concentrated in the few U.S. counties with significant employment in energy extraction industries.

Book Spanning the Nexus Integrated Energy Research on Agriculture Water Challenges

Download or read book Spanning the Nexus Integrated Energy Research on Agriculture Water Challenges written by and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This presentation will explore the land, food, water, and energy implications of changing energy systems. With an increase in solar development, there are potential conflicts between land use for solar and agricultural. Under the DOE's InSPIRE project, researchers are gathering data and performing experiments for the co-location of solar development and the agricultural production of crops, pollinator habitat, and grazing. Initial findings from this project highlight mutual benefits for both farmers and the PV installation themselves, all while providing an avenue to reduce land use conflicts. Also, in this presentation, the intersection of water and energy systems will be explored. Energy production requires water and water treatment and transport requires energy. This presentation will highlight past work examining oil and gas water use and detail upcoming water treatment research within the National Water Alliance for Innovation (NAWI).

Book Biofuels for Transport

    Book Details:
  • Author : Worldwatch Institute
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2012-05-04
  • ISBN : 1136570926
  • Pages : 518 pages

Download or read book Biofuels for Transport written by Worldwatch Institute and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-04 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world is on the verge of an unprecedented increase in the production and use of biofuels for transport. The combination of rising oil prices, issues of security, climate instability and pollution, deepening poverty in rural and agricultural areas, and a host of improved technologies, is propelling governments to enact powerful incentives for the use of these fuels, which is in turn sparking investment. Biofuels for Transport is a unique and comprehensive assessment of the opportunities and risks of the large-scale production of biofuels. The book demystifies complex questions and concerns, such as thefood v. fuel debate. Global in scope, it is further informed by five country studies from Brazil, China, Germany, India and Tanzania. The authors conclude that biofuels will play a significant role in our energy future, but warn that the large-scale use of biofuels carries risks that require focused and immediate policy initiatives. Published in association with BMELV, FNR and GTZ.
