Book excerpt: It is our conviction - based on many years of teaching and practical experience - that professional skill in forestry will develop more rea dily and more efficiently if forestry students are presented with a clear understanding, at an early stage, of the impact of the physical factors that both enhance and inhibit forestry activities. Tnis know ledge is best aquired by adressing the physical world of forestry with a set of analytical tools through which an almost infinite number of variables can be listed in order, be measured and their interaction be explored and resolved. This is the main purpose of this joint effort, presented in two volumes, Part I and Part II. Part I is analytic, written as a basic text for undergraduates in cour ses such as logging, transport, forest engineering and even forest ma nagement. It deals with the fundamentals of technology in forestry as determined by the physical environment. Briefly it can be visualized as the application of forestry wi thin the parameters: space, time and energy. Forestry is a process with a long time horizon. Free solar energy creates biomass which, with the aid of other forms of energy, is converted into products and services. A knowledge of the dependecies and interactions is indiGpensible for the forestry profession. The analytic approach serves two purposes: to bring about a clear un derstanding of the real world of forest and to develop tools through which efficiency and productivity can be explored and improved.

Book excerpt: The consequences of climate change for society are analysed in this landmark assessment from the IPCC. This book assesses the available knowledge on the many issues that society has to face, including the international decision-making framework; applicability to climate change of techniques for assessing costs and benefits; the significant social costs of projected climate change; and the economic assessment of policy instruments to combat climate change, nationally and internationally. Some important conclusions of this Second Assessment Report indicate that 10 to 30% of greenhouse gas emissions in most countries can be reduced at negative or zero cost - 'no regrets' measures. Also, the literature indicates that climate change will cause aggregate net damage, which provides an economic rationale for going beyond 'no regrets' measures. It also indicates that a portfolio of mitigation, adaptation and research measures is a sound strategy for addressing climate change given the remaining uncertainties. This report speaks directly to the issues that are faced by the many countries committed to limit emissions of greenhouse gases by the year 2000, and currently negotiating actions to be taken beyond that date. Will be of great value to the international community of policymakers interested in the consequences of climate change, as well as to economists, social and natural scientists.

In this sense, the assessment of energy systems from a life-cycle perspective is of paramount importance when it comes to effectively planning the energy sector. While environmental issues are commonly addressed through the use of the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology, the comprehensive evaluation of the economic and social aspects of energy systems often remains ignored or underdeveloped. This book consists of a set of scientific works addressing the analysis of energy systems from a (life-cycle) technical, economic, environmental and/or social standpoint. Case studies at and beyond the technology level are included, some of them involving a combination of life cycle and non-life cycle approaches for the thorough evaluation of energy systems under the umbrella of sustainability.
