Book Endurance

Download or read book Endurance written by Scott Kelly and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BEST SELLER A stunning, personal memoir from the astronaut and modern-day hero who spent a record-breaking year aboard the International Space Station—a message of hope for the future that will inspire for generations to come. The veteran of four spaceflights and the American record holder for consecutive days spent in space, Scott Kelly has experienced things very few have. Now, he takes us inside a sphere utterly hostile to human life. He describes navigating the extreme challenge of long-term spaceflight, both life-threatening and mundane: the devastating effects on the body; the isolation from everyone he loves and the comforts of Earth; the catastrophic risks of colliding with space junk; and the still more haunting threat of being unable to help should tragedy strike at home--an agonizing situation Kelly faced when, on a previous mission, his twin brother's wife, American Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, was shot while he still had two months in space. Kelly's humanity, compassion, humor, and determination resonate throughout, as he recalls his rough-and-tumble New Jersey childhood and the youthful inspiration that sparked his astounding career, and as he makes clear his belief that Mars will be the next, ultimately challenging, step in spaceflight. In Endurance, we see the triumph of the human imagination, the strength of the human will, and the infinite wonder of the galaxy.

Book Mechanical Similitude and Turbulence

Download or read book Mechanical Similitude and Turbulence written by Theodore Von Kármán and published by . This book was released on 1931 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report deals with the theory of the vortex street which enables the reproduction of the mechanism of the form resistance with suitable approximation under stated conditions, although such a resistance is precluded in a fluid which is perfectly inviscid. Disregarding for the present the origination of the vortex, the stream attitude in the wake of the body may be described approximately correct by the representation of individual vortices, without transgressing the law governing the motion of such vortices in an ideal fluid. Another striking example is the theory of the induced drag of wings, which likewise shows the extent of applying the vortex equations without overstepping the bounds of the dynamics of ideal fluids.

Book Flight Patterns

    Book Details:
  • Author : Roger E. Bilstein
  • Publisher : University of Georgia Press
  • Release : 2008-12-01
  • ISBN : 0820332143
  • Pages : 266 pages

Download or read book Flight Patterns written by Roger E. Bilstein and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2008-12-01 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1918 to 1929 American aviation progressed through the pioneering era, establishing the pattern of its impact on national security, commerce and industry, communication, travel, geography, and international relations. In America, as well as on a global basis, society experienced a dramatic transformation from a two-dimensional world to a three-dimensional one. By 1929 aviation was poised at the threshold of a new epoch. Covering both military and civil aviation trends, Roger Bilstein's study highlights these developments, explaining how the pattern of aviation activities in the 1920s is reflected through succeeding decades. At the same time, the author discusses the social, economic, and political ramifications of this robust new technology. Aviation histories usually pay little attention to aeronautical images as an aspect of popular culture. Thoughtful observers of the 1920s such as Stuart Chase and Heywood Broun considered aircraft to be an encouraging example of the new technology-workmanlike, efficient, and graceful, perhaps representing a new spirit of international good will. Flight Patterns is particularly useful for its discussion of both economic and cultural factors, treating them as integrated elements of the evolving air age.

Book Flight test Data on the Static Fore and aft Stability of Various German Airplanes

Download or read book Flight test Data on the Static Fore and aft Stability of Various German Airplanes written by Walter Hübner and published by . This book was released on 1933 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The static longitudinal stability of an airplane with locked elevator is usually determined by analysis and model tests. The present report proposes to supply the results of such measurements. The method consisted of recording the dynamic pressure versus elevator displacement at different center-of-gravity positions in unaccelerated flight.

Book Mechanical Properties of Some Materials Used in Airplane Construction

Download or read book Mechanical Properties of Some Materials Used in Airplane Construction written by E. B. Wolff and published by . This book was released on 1928 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since lightness is desirable in airplane construction, greater stresses must be tolerated than in other kinds of construction. It is therefore necessary to have a more accurate knowledge of the greatest stresses that may occur and of the actual properties of the materials used. The Aeronautic Research Laboratories took the limit of elasticity as the basis of the strength calculations. Many tests were made of different steels, woods, aluminum alloys, and fabrics.
