Book excerpt: The purpose of this brief review is to examine resistance training responses of selected hormones related to acute stress and growth promoting actions. Hormonal mechanisms appear to be involved with both short-term homeostatic control and long-term cellular adaptations. Few studies have modeled the exercise stimulus in resistance training to determine the role of different exercise variables to the hormonal response. A variety of resistance exercise protocols result in increases in peripheral hormonal concentrations. It appears that single factor variables such as the intensity (% of RM) of exercise and amount of muscle mass utilized in the exercise protocol are important determinants of hormonal responses. The volume of exercise, also appears to be an important determinant of hormonal response. Still, little is known with regard to other single and multiple factor variables (e.g., rest period length) and their relationships to peripheral hormonal alterations. Collectively, such information will allow greater understanding concerning the nature of the exercise stimulus and its relationship to training adaptations resulting from heavy resistance exercise. Book excerpt: Performance, ultrasound, and area under the curve data were analyzed using ANCOVA to observe between-group comparisons while controlling for baseline (PRE) values. Endocrine data were analyzed using a two-way, mixedfactorial repeated-measures ANOVA. RESULTS: Participants in the UT group experienced significant strength improvements of the trained (28 to 150%) and untrained legs (12 to 160%). Training did not elicit significant improvements in maximal isometric strength or power output of the trained or untrained leg. The trained RF experienced significant increases in CSA and MT. The trained VL experienced a significant increase in CSA. Muscle size of the untrained leg was not significantly augmented. Training did not elicit changes in the acute hormonal response to exercise. CONCLUSIONS: Four weeks of unilateral lower body resistance training using the dominant leg appears sufficient to evoke strength gains of both the ipsilateral and contralateral legs. However, meaningful morphological changes were observed in the trained leg only. Differences in acute hormonal responses to resistance exercise did not appear to explain the observed differences. In addition, unilateral lower body resistance training did not appear to augment the acute endocrine response to an acute bout of resistance exercise. Current findings suggest that the cross-educational strength transfer during the early stage of training is attributable to factors other than changes in muscle morphology and circulating hormones.

Book excerpt: Monitoring individual endocrine responses to exercise allows researchers and practitioners to monitor training-associated stress. While endocrine response to traditional resistance training has been extensively studied, response to variable resistance training remains under-investigated. PURPOSE: to determine if training with elastic variable resistance creates a sustained adaptation by changing the bioavailable concentrations of testosterone and cortisol differently than traditional resistance training. METHODS: Strength trained male athletes (n = 22; 22 ± 3 y; 98.9 ± 18.2 kg; 180.8 ± 7.3 cm) completed a one-repetition maximum (1RM) test on a modified deadlift exercise before a six-week training program. Training consisted of twice-weekly sessions at 90% of 1RM. Training groups consisted of elastomer bands providing variable resistance (VR) vs. isoinertial movement with traditional resistance (TR), using college athletes (CA) and elite athletes (EA). Saliva for immunoassay determination of testosterone (T) and cortisol (C) was collected on the first training session (t1: pre-exercise, t2: 30 minutes post-exercise) and on the last training session (t3: pre-exercise, t4: 30 minutes post-exercise).
