Book excerpt: Although it was first published in 1931, Endless Story remains the only comprehensive account of the services of the Navys small craft destroyers, torpedo boats and patrol vessels during the First World War, and moreover the only one written by an officer personally involved. Even if Dorling did not take part in all the actions he describes, he knew the men who did, and gleaned much of his information from personal contact. As a result the book has both authenticity and authority, but is composed with the all verve of the popular novelist that Taffrail was to become. It was a bestseller in its day, and now enjoys the status of a classic.

Book excerpt: How to Build Plots That Grab Your Readers and Won't Let Go - By Building and Integrating Characters, Story Arcs, and Engaging Themes Ever wonder what makes a great book or movie different from a pitiful excuse for entertainment? Mostly, it starts with a plot. But what makes a plot work? From months of my own studying the vast numbers of approaches to plotting, it's clear that there is still a wide gulf between the mechanics of a plot and having a working framework usable for any writer. This led to the study of two authors who had already done their own studies of which plots made successful entertainment, and actually built their own still-popular plot generators based on this knowledge. Many well-known and obscure writers have used these methods instead of being dogged by ""writer's block."" The anwers to what makes a great plot are simple and few. The bonus in this book is giving you your own plot generator to help you when you're stuck. Get Your Copy Today.

Book excerpt: This is my story. I was brought up in Thailand in the old-fashioned way. My father was strict, my sisters and I were not allowed out after 18:00. We were not allowed to have a boyfriend until we finished university. My father was abusive to my mother, and on a lesser scale, to my sisters and me.Because of this, not long after finishing University, I moved to Bangkok for work and stayed with my eldest sister. While working in a Bangkok hotel, I met a wealthy Scottish businessman. He persuaded me to visit him in Scotland. We married, I had a wonderful, successful husband, a lovely home, it seemed I had all I could wish for. But, after our first child, he became secretive, controlling me and the children. He subjected me to physical and sexual violence. I was trapped in an abusive marriage for twenty years. At first, I thought I had no choice other than to suffer it, because I had seen my father abuse my mother. She tolerated it because there is little recourse for abused women in Thailand. Our culture and religion mean that you marry for life, unless your husband wishes to divorce you, in which case, women often end up homeless. With help from my friends and support organisations, I came to understand that I did not have to put up with violence and abuse. However, leaving was not easy, my ex-husband refused to divorce me, threatened to kill me, alienated me from my children, and employed people to follow me and record my telephone conversations. I ended up suicidal and homeless.During the divorce process, he concealed his assets, used extortion against me, and constantly submitted false allegations to delay family court action.I did not let this break me, I let go and moved on. My story is one of hope, there is always help out there.

As we accompany him on his journey…we share in his loss, surprise, and grief, right up to the novel’s shocking conclusion.” —The New York Times Book Review In the tradition of The Invisible Bridge and The Weight of Ink, “a vibrant, page-turning family mystery” (Jennifer Cody Epstein, author of Wunderland) about a writer who discovers the truth about his mother’s wartime years in Amsterdam, unearthing a shocking secret that becomes the subject of his magnum opus. Renowned author Yoel Blum reluctantly agrees to visit his birthplace of Amsterdam to promote his books, despite promising his late mother that he would never return to that city. While touring the Jewish Historical Museum with his wife, Yoel stumbles upon footage portraying prewar Dutch Jewry and is astonished to see the youthful face of his beloved mother staring back at him, posing with his father, his older sister…and an infant he doesn’t recognize. This unsettling discovery launches him into a fervent search for the truth, shining a light on Amsterdam’s dark wartime history—the underground networks that hid Jewish children away from danger and those who betrayed their own for the sake of survival. The deeper into the past Yoel digs up, the better he understands his mother’s silence, and the more urgent the question that has unconsciously haunted him for a lifetime—Who am I?—becomes. Part family mystery, part wartime drama, House on Endless Waters is “a rewarding meditation on survival” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review) and a “deeply immersive achievement that brings to life stories that must never be forgotten” (USA TODAY).

  • Pages : 304 pages

Download or read book Endless Endless written by Adam Clair and published by . This book was released on 2022-01-18 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An inspiring, revelatory exploration of the genesis and impact of the fabled Elephant 6 collective and the baffling exodus of its larger-than-life luminary, Neutral Milk Hotel frontman Jeff Mangum Years after its release, Neutral Milk Hotel's In the Aeroplane Over the Sea remains one of the most beloved and best-selling albums in all of indie music, hailed as a classic so influential as to be almost synonymous with the ongoing vinyl revival. But despite its outsized impact, a question looms even larger: why did frontman Jeff Mangum, just as the record propelled him to the brink of music superstardom, choose instead to disappear entirely? The mystery has perplexed listeners for decades--until now. In barely two years, Neutral Milk Hotel rose from house show obscurity in Athens, Georgia, to widespread hype and critical acclaim, selling out rock clubs across the country and gracing the tops of numerous year-end best-of lists. But just as his band was reaching the escape velocity necessary to ascend from indie rock success to mainstream superstar, Mangum hit the eject button. After the 1998 release of Aeroplane and a worldwide tour to support it, Mangum stopped playing shows, releasing new music, or even doing interviews. He never explained why, not even to his friends or colleagues, but thanks to both the strength of Aeroplane and his vexing decision to walk away from rock stardom, Neutral Milk Hotel's impact only grew from there. In Endless Endless, Adam Clair finds the answer to indie rock's biggest mystery, which turns out to be much more complicated and fascinating than the myths or popular speculation would have you believe. To understand Mangum and Neutral Milk Hotel and Aeroplane requires a deep dive into the unconventional inner workings of the mercurial collective from which they emerged, the legendary Elephant 6 Recording Company. Endless Endless details the rise and fall of this radical music scene, the lives and relationships of the and the colossal influence that still radiates from it, centered around the collective's accidental figurehead, one of the most idolized and misunderstood artists in the world, presenting Mangum and his collaborators in vividly human detail and shining a light into the secret world of these extraordinary and aggressively bizarre artists. Endless Endless offers unprecedented access to this notoriously mysterious collective, featuring more than 100 new interviews and dozens of forgotten old ones, along with never-before-seen photos, answering questions that have persisted for decades while also provoking new ones. In this deeply researched account, Endless Endless examines not just how the Elephant 6 came to be so much more than the sum of its parts, but how community can foster art--and how art can build community.

Book excerpt: A collection of chilling and prescient stories about ecological apocalypse and the merging of human and machine. Welcome to Moderan, world of the future. Here perpetual war is waged by furious masters fighting from Strongholds well stocked with “arsenals of fear” and everyone is enamored with hate. The devastated earth is coated by vast sheets of gray plastic, while humans vie to replace more and more of their own “soft parts” with steel. What need is there for nature when trees and flowers can be pushed up through holes in the plastic? Who requires human companionship when new-metal mistresses are waiting? But even a Stronghold master can doubt the catechism of Moderan. Wanderers, poets, and his own children pay visits, proving that another world is possible. “As if Whitman and Nietzsche had collaborated,” wrote Brian Aldiss of David R. Bunch’s work. Originally published in science-fiction magazines in the 1960s and ’70s, these mordant stories, though passionately sought by collectors, have been unavailable in a single volume for close to half a century. Like Anthony Burgess in A Clockwork Orange, Bunch coined a mind-bending new vocabulary. He sought not to divert readers from the horror of modernity but to make us face it squarely. This volume includes eleven previously uncollected Moderan stories.
