Book excerpt: "When English naturalist Joseph Banks (1743-1820) accompanied Captain James Cook (1728-1779) on his historic mission into the Pacific, the Endeavour voyage of 1768-1771, he took with him a team of collectors and illustrators. Banks and his team returned with unprecedented collections of artefacts and specimens of stunning birds, fish, and other animals as well as thousands of plants, most seen for the first time in Europe. They produced, too, remarkable landscape and figure drawings of the peoples encountered on the voyage along with detailed journals and descriptions of the places visited, which, with the first detailed maps of these lands (Tahiti, New Zealand and the east coast of Australia), were afterwards used to create lavishly illustrated accounts of the mission. These ... objects, along with contemporary portraits of key personalities aboard the ship, a scale model and plans of the ship itself, scientific instruments taken on the voyage, and commemorative medals and sketches - will tell the story of the Endeavour voyage."--Back cover.

Book The Endeavour Journals

Download or read book The Endeavour Journals written by John Macdonald and published by Pen and Sword History. This book was released on 2024-05-16 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1770 H.M. Bark Endeavour arrived in New Holland, Australia, the 'Continent of Smoke'. On board were Lieutenant James Cook, gentleman naturalist Joseph Banks, natural history artist Sydney Parkinson, and Midshipman James Magra. For the first time, this book combines the journals of these men to present a single, cohesive narrative that brings the story to life as never before. The journals are complimented by over 300 images, including charts, costal profiles, plans of harbors, and many original drawings executed during the voyage of the animals, people and landscape unique to the region. Of the many titles that are available concerning Cook and his voyaging, few focus on Cook’s New Holland experience. Most commonly these titles are interpretative accounts, and heavily weighted with the author’s opinion. However, here the story of New Holland is told in the words of the explorers themselves, containing first hand accounts of all the elements of drama, risk and first discovery. Focusing particularly on the contact with the Indigenous people and how they were first described by Europeans, this is an adaption of the discovery story made accessible to the general reader as well as the historian, without compromising the integrity of the original document. These adventurers were men of their own time, constrained by the common beliefs that fashioned the lives of people two hundred and fifty years ago. If some of their words sit uncomfortably with current thinking, we should remind ourselves that some of our own beliefs and actions, might similarly be thought beyond the pale by future generations, and that we too may find ourselves the target of criticism from those who come after us.

Download or read book Picturing the Pacific written by James Taylor and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-09-20 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over 50 years between the 1760s and the early 19th century, the pioneers who sailed from Europe to explore the Pacific brought back glimpses of a new world in the form of oil paintings, watercolors and drawings--a sensational view of a part of the world few would ever see. Today these works represent a fascinating and inspiring perspective from the frontier of discovery. It was Sir Joseph Banks, President of the Royal Society, who popularized the placement of professional artists on British ships of exploration. They captured striking and memorable images of everything they encountered: exotic landscapes, beautiful flora and fauna, as well as remarkable portraits of indigenous peoples. These earliest views of the Pacific were designed to promote the new world as enticing, to make it seem familiar, to encourage further exploration and, ultimately, British settlement. Drawing on both private and public collections from around the world, this lavish book collects oil paintings, watercolors, drawings, prints and other documents from those voyages, and presents a unique glimpse into an age where science and art became irrevocably entwined.

Book Rediscovering Objects from Islamic Lands in Enlightenment Europe

Download or read book Rediscovering Objects from Islamic Lands in Enlightenment Europe written by Isabelle Dolezalek and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-30 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that the provenance of early modern and medieval objects from Islamic lands was largely forgotten until the "long" eighteenth century, when the first efforts were made to reconnect them with the historical contexts in which they were produced. For the first time, these Islamicate objects were read, studied and classified – and given a new place in history. Freed by scientific interest, they were used in new ways and found new homes, including in museums. More generally, the process of "rediscovery" opened up the prehistory of the discipline of Islamic art history and had a significant impact on conceptions of cultural boundaries, differences and identity. The book will be of interest to scholars working in the history of art, the art of the Islamic world, early modern history and art historiography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Banking today is not what it was some years back. The basic purpose for which banks came into being was deposit mobilization and credit dispensation, which in a short form can be called 3-6-3 banking. It is not the same any more as the major agenda of the banks today is to multiply profits through an array of services like insurance, mutual fund, wealth management etc. to customers. The growth of financial markets, blurring of product boundaries, new network technologies have brought in enormous opportunities in the banking sector. The key to success is knowledge on the subject and updation of the events in the sector. Living up to the aspirations and requirements of the industry, many Indian Universities have introduced Banking as a subject in the curriculum of management courses at the undergraduate and Postgraduate levels. Business Schools and institutes of academic excellence have evolved exclusive courses on Banking to tap the potential in the field. This book meets the requirements of the subject in all its angles and intends to serve the requirements of management students who would like to make a career in banking and for those in pursuit of promotional avenues within the bank.
