Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Field of Clover" is a book written by English playwright, artist, and novelist Laurence Housman. The 1898 publication delves into topics such as romantic relationships, societal equity, and the position of women in late 19th-century society. Veronica Leslie, the protagonist of the story, is a woman who, when her father passes away, inherits Clover Field, a sizable estate. Veronica, who goes by Vire, is portrayed as a strong, self-reliant woman who challenges social norms. She turns Clover Field into a utopian society where justice and equality are valued highly. The story explores a number of societal themes, such as gender roles, class differences, and the restrictions placed on women in Victorian society, as Vire tries to establish a harmonious community. The plot develops with a mix of pastoral fiction elements, romance, and societal satire. "The Field of Clover" is a reflection of Laurence Housman's dedication to social improvement and support of progressive ideas. The work is renowned for its examination of utopian ideas within the framework of late 19th-century society and for its feminist undertones.

Book N by E

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rockwell Kent
  • Publisher : Wesleyan University Press

  • Pages : 305 pages

Download or read book N by E written by Rockwell Kent and published by Wesleyan University Press. This book was released on 1996-07-26 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A classic tale of seafaring, shipwreck, and survival, reprinted from Wesleyan University Press's 1978 facsimile of the original. When artist, illustrator, writer, and adventurer Rockwell Kent first published N by E in a limited edition in 1930, his account of a voyage on a 33-foot cutter from New York Harbor to the rugged shores of Greenland quickly became a collectors' item. Little wonder, for readers are immediately drawn to Kent's vivid descriptions of the experience; we share "the feeling of wind and wet and cold, of lifting seas and steep descents, of rolling over as the wind gusts hit," and the sound "of wind in the shrouds, of hard spray flung on a drum-tight canvas, of rushing water at the scuppers, of the gale shearing a tormented sea." When the ship sinks in a storm-swept fjord within 50 miles of its destination, the story turns to the stranding and subsequent rescue of the three-man crew, salvage of the vessel, and life among native Greenlanders. Magnificently illustrated by Kent's wood-block prints and narrated in his poetic and highly entertaining style, this tale of the perils of killer nor'easters, treacherous icebergs, and impenetrable fog—and the joys of sperm whales breaching or dawn unmasking a longed-for landfall—is a rare treat for old salts and landlubbers alike.

Book excerpt: Purchase one of 1st World Library's Classic Books and help support our free internet library of downloadable eBooks. Visit us online at www.1stWorldLibrary.ORG - - The great farm hall was ablaze with the fire-light, and noisy with laughter and talk and many-sounding work. None could be idle but the very young and the very old: little Rol, who was hugging a puppy, and old Trella, whose palsied hand fumbled over her knitting. The early evening had closed in, and the farm-servants, come from their outdoor work, had assembled in the ample hall, which gave space for a score or more of workers. Several of the men were engaged in carving, and to these were yielded the best place and light; others made or repaired fishing-tackle and harness, and a great seine net occupied three pairs of hands. Of the women most were sorting and mixing eider feather and chopping straw to add to it. Looms were there, though not in present use, but three wheels whirred emulously, and the finest and swiftest thread of the three ran between the fingers of the house-mistress. Near her were some children, busy too, plaiting wicks for candles and lamps. Each group of workers had a lamp in its centre, and those farthest from the fire had live heat from two braziers filled with glowing wood embers, replenished now and again from the generous hearth. But the flicker of the great fire was manifest to remotest corners, and prevailed beyond the limits of the weaker lights.
