Book excerpt: The Republic of San Marino traces its origins back to Saint Marinus who established a settlement in AD 301. It has managed to maintain its independence since then in spite of a Papal attempt to annexe it in 1739. San Marino gave refuge to Giuseppe Garibaldi, and after Italian Reunification, San Marino's independence was assured. Its system of government, having two captains regent each serving for six months, and unable to stand again for five years, has ensured stability, although there was a political crisis in 1957 which resulted in the overthrow of the Communist government, the first elected Communist government in Western Europe. San Marino has long been a popular tourist destination, and is well-known around the world for its postage stamps.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Freak of Freedom, or the Republic of San Marino Though not offering the sight-seer attrae tions such as the rest of Italy possesses, San Marino affords plenty of natural charms of wildness and simplicity; for whilst the views combine some of the most fantastic peaks of the Umbrian Mountains, the study of their private life and customs leads one to agree with their own favourite simile, Here we live and die, like the flowers of the field.' The few illustrations introduced herein are from some of my own sketches taken on the spot. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. San Marino, small republic situated on the slopes of Mount Titano, on the Adriatic side of central Italy between the Emilia-Romagna and Marche regions and surrounded on all sides by the Republic of Italy. It is the smallest independent state in Europe after Vatican City and Monaco and, until the independence of Nauru (1968), the smallest republic in the world. In the year 257 of the Christian era, at a time when the persecutions against the Christians were becoming more and more harsh, the Roman emperors Diocletian and Maximian decided to rebuild the city of Rimini, which was destroyed by Demosthenes, king of the Liburni people. To this end, they recruited architects, masons and skilled workers from every part of the Empire. Among these, Marino and Leone came to Rimini from Dalmatia and they soon distinguished themselves for their expertise in stone working, as well as for their exceptional moral virtues.

Book San Marino History

Book excerpt: San Marino History. Discovery, Foundation of the nation, Culture and Cultural Policies. Tourism. The territory of the Republic of San Marino was frequented and inhabited since remote times, as testified to by the discovery of several archaeological remains dating back from the Eneolithic Age third millennium onwards. Important traces of human presence have been found for the Bronze and Iron Ages, as well as for the Villanovan, Roman and Goths' Ages. With regard to the latter, the remains found include some furnishings and objects of very refined jewellery dating back to the 5th and 6th centuries. On Mount Titano, where the San Marino community first settled, the remains of an important cultural site have also been found. In this place, which started to be frequented in the 5th century., a divinity was worshipped, which was thought to have thaumaturgic powers. The community, from which the State of San Marino subsequently originated, consolidated during the late Middle Ages, probably around a monastery, which had been built on Mount Titano already in the 6th century
