Download or read book Faith Finding a Voice written by Cardinal Vincent Nichols and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-04-05 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Faith Finding a Voice, Cardinal Vincent Nichols invites us to join him in an exploration of the presence of God in our lives. How might we attune our ears to listen with greater attention to the voice of God, through Scripture, the teachings of the Church, divine worship and the exercise of Caritas? How might the gift of faith be realised in our lives in order that an authentic voice might be heard through our words and actions? The reader is encouraged to reflect upon the mystery of the Triune God revealed to humanity and seen uniquely in Jesus Christ. Drawing primarily upon the altarpiece The Nativity with Saints by Pietro Orioli, Cardinal Vincent shows how, by following the way and ministry of Jesus, we are drawn into union with the divine, now and for all eternity. Through this vision the Cardinal advocates the necessity of theological and religious literacy for the common good of society. This engagement encourages us to nourish the seeds of hope and to strive to build a more peaceful world through inter-faith dialogue. Such dialogue is enhanced, the Cardinal believes, through the baptised faithful understanding their role as 'missionary disciples' (Pope Francis, Evangelii Gaudium, 120). The ministries of the Church are portrayed as an interlocking framework in which the unity of the faithful may glorify God and serve humanity through the voice of evangelization.

Book Women and the Gender of God

Download or read book Women and the Gender of God written by Amy Peeler and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2022-10-04 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A robust theological argument against the assumption that God is male. God values women. While many Christians would readily affirm this truth, the widely held assumption that the Bible depicts a male God persists—as it has for centuries. This misperception of Christianity not only perniciously implies that men deserve an elevated place over women but also compromises the glory of God by making God appear to be part of creation, subject to it and its categories, rather than in transcendence of it. Through a deep reading of the incarnation narratives of the New Testament and other relevant scriptural texts, Amy Peeler shows how the Bible depicts a God beyond gender and a savior who, while embodied as a man, is the unification in one person of the image of God that resides in both male and female. Peeler begins with a study of Mary and her response to the annunciation, through which it becomes clear that God empowers women and honors their agency. Then Peeler describes from a theological standpoint how the virgin birth of Jesus—the second Adam—reverses the gendered division enacted in the garden of Eden. While acknowledging the significance of the Bible’s frequent use of “Father” language to represent God as a caring parent, Peeler goes beneath the surface of this metaphor to show how God is never sexualized by biblical writers or described as being physically involved in procreation—making the concept of a masculine God dubious, at best. From these doctrinal centers of Christianity, Peeler leads the way in reasserting the value of women in the church and prophetically speaking out against the destructive idolatry of masculinity.

Book The Joy of the Gospel

Download or read book The Joy of the Gospel written by Pope Francis and published by Image. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The perfect gift! A specially priced, beautifully designed hardcover edition of The Joy of the Gospel with a foreword by Robert Barron and an afterword by James Martin, SJ. “The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus… In this Exhortation I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by this joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church’s journey in years to come.” – Pope Francis This special edition of Pope Francis's popular message of hope explores themes that are important for believers in the 21st century. Examining the many obstacles to faith and what can be done to overcome those hurdles, he emphasizes the importance of service to God and all his creation. Advocating for “the homeless, the addicted, refugees, indigenous peoples, the elderly who are increasingly isolated and abandoned,” the Holy Father shows us how to respond to poverty and current economic challenges that affect us locally and globally. Ultimately, Pope Francis demonstrates how to develop a more personal relationship with Jesus Christ, “to recognize the traces of God’s Spirit in events great and small.” Profound in its insight, yet warm and accessible in its tone, The Joy of the Gospel is a call to action to live a life motivated by divine love and, in turn, to experience heaven on earth. Includes a foreword by Robert Barron, author of Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of the Faith and James Martin, SJ, author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage
