Download or read book Enticed by the Light written by Sharon Beekmann and published by Resource Publications (OR). This book was released on 2011-02 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For ten years, Sharon Beekmann trusted the ""spirit guides"" that promised her fulfillment. By the time she discovered their frightening, true identity, it was too late--they had taken control of her mind . . . tormenting her, attacking her sanity, pushing her to the brink of suicide. But in her darkest hour, Sharon discovered a Savior powerful enough to free her from the evil that threatened to destroy her. In Enticed by the Light, Beekmann describes her descent into spiritism and her fierce battle as a Christian convert pitted against terrifying, unseen forces. More than electrifying reading, Enticed by the Light is a revealing look at New Age practices . . . and a remarkable testimony to the liberating power of Jesus Christ. ""Caught in the insidious trap of New Age deception and danger, Sharon Beekmann's journey to freedom is an incredible story of hope, encouragement, and a way out for those still trapped."" Quin Sherrer, author of Miracles Happen When You Pray Sharon Beekmann's personal story provides a much needed message of both alarm and hope. Her shout of warning says that seeking spiritual experience apart from the absolutes of God's Word is a sure road to deceived bondage. Her message of hope assures that the darkest spiritual bondage can be broken when Christ is embraced and darkness is renounced."" Dr. Mark I. Bubeck, International Center For Biblical Counseling ""Numerous people in the West are searching for meaningful spiritual experience by contacting ""angels"" and ""spirit guides."" Sharon Beekmann's story tragically illustrates that not all spirits have our best interest in mind. The good news is that the Lord Jesus Christ offers deliverance and freedom from their deceit and tyranny."" Dr. Clinton E. Arnold, Professor of New Testament Talbot School of Theology ""Sharon Beekmann is a committed Christian who attends our church faithfully and serves Christ well. Sharon has unusual discernment with regard to the spiritual pitfalls of a fallen world. I believe that through this book, the light of Christ will shine on many."" Dr. James S. Dixon, Senior Pastor Cherry Hills Community Church Highlands Ranch, Colorado ""Sharon Beekmann's Enticed by the Light is a psychologically perceptive description of occultism's magnetism for a troubled youth and a moving account of the Lord Jesus Christ's power to liberate a young woman from it. This well-written true story is as intriguing as a novel. ""The book both alerts dabblers in the occult to the dreadful dangers of deceptive ""spirit guides"" and realistically depicts the liberating power of the Holy Spirit-illumined Scriptures presented by understanding, caring people. ""This compelling book vividly illustrates why friends and relatives may become involved in occultism, what they may be going through, and how to help them. Its unique integration of psychological and theological insights should enhance the ability of counselors, pastors, teachers and students to minister for both preventive and restorative purposes. Dr. Gordon R. Lewis, Senior Professor, Denver Seminary Sharon Beekmann is an ordained minister in the Evangelical Presbyterian Church. In addition to writing, she teaches books of the Bible at local churches and conducts seminars on biblical demonology. She is General Editor and contributor for the forthcoming Masquerades of Satan: A Handbook on Biblical Demonology.

Book Thinking in the Light of Time

Download or read book Thinking in the Light of Time written by Karin de Boer and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2015-09-15 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heidegger's lifelong project of exposing and deconstructing the presuppositions governing the history of metaphysics begins with the conception of temporality outlined in Being and Time, a work which Heidegger never completed. In Thinking in the Light of Time, de Boer not only traces the notion of temporality developed in Being and Time, but goes beyond the published portion of that work to offer a reconstruction of its pivotal third division based on a systematic interpretation of other works, many of which have only recently been published. Emphasizing the continuity between Heidegger's early and later thought, de Boer provides a systematic interpretation of Heidegger's work as a whole. Hegel's claim to have perfected metaphysics is central to de Boer's concern with Heidegger's attempt to deconstruct metaphysics. Heidegger's struggles to come to terms with Hegel's speculative science, especially the manner in which Hegel regards his own project as founded upon an understanding of time, is thus one of the focal points of de Boer's interpretation of Heidegger's deconstruction of metaphysics. De Boer argues that it is especially in his reading of Hegel that one sees how deeply Heidegger is committed to the attempt to do justice to the radical finitude of human life and its possible philosophical self-interpretations. Her reading of Heidegger shows how his works paved the way for the deconstructive efforts that guide Derrida's thought.

Into His Presence Volume 2 uses the documented encounters of the prophets of old with the God of History as tools to help you understand the character of God as a person. In this book, you will see the God of the Bible as a divine person encountered by the prophets and the writers of the Old Testament. The approach to the study of the Bible presented in this book will completely change how you read the Bible and how you perceive the divine author of the Bible. In this book, you will learn how many historically documented conversations each of the great prophets had with God and understand that Jehovah moved with purpose in each of His encounters with His prophets. Your understanding of the character of God will be enriched as you see Him through the eyes of Elijah, Jehovah's defender against religious and political leaders who waged an aggressive campaign against the worship of Jehovah. You will be enlightened as you examine the person of Jehovah through the eyes of Isaiah and understand why he saw Jehovah as the only Savior and the coming Messiah. You will be amazed by the number of conversations Jeremiah had with God and see how his encounters with Jehovah demonstrate that encountering Jehovah can completely transform your views about His person. You will walk with Daniel, Zechariah, Esther and Nehemiah as their relationships with Jehovah turn them into His ambassadors in their own world. Through the enumerated experiences of each of the prophets, you will come to understand the consistent character attributes of God as a person over the course of history. Book Berkeley s Puzzle

  • Author : John Campbell
  • Publisher : OUP Oxford
  • Release : 2014-08-21
  • ISBN : 0191025542
  • Pages : 225 pages

Download or read book Berkeley s Puzzle written by John Campbell and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-08-21 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sensory experience seems to be the basis of our knowledge and conception of mind-independent things. The puzzle is to understand how that can be: even if the things we experience (apples, tables, trees, etc), are mind-independent how does our sensory experience of them enable us to conceive of them as mind-independent? George Berkeley thought that sensory experience can only provide us with the conception of mind-dependent things, things which cannot exist when they aren't being perceived. It's easy to dismiss Berkeley's conclusion but harder to see how to avoid it. In this book, John Campbell and Quassim Cassam propose very different solutions to Berkeley's Puzzle. For Campbell, sensory experience can be the basis of our knowledge of mind-independent things because it is a relation, more primitive than thought, between the perceiver and high-level objects and properties in the mind-independent world. Cassam opposes this 'relationalist' solution to the Puzzle and defends a 'representationalist' solution: sensory experience can give us the conception of mind-independent things because it represents its objects as mind-independent, but does so without presupposing concepts of mind-independent things. This book is written in the form of a debate between two rival approaches to understanding the relationship between concepts and sensory experience. Although Berkeley's Puzzle frames the debate, the questions addressed by Campbell and Cassam aren't just of historical interest. They are among the most fundamental questions in philosophy.

Book The Collected Works of Witness Lee 1957 volume 1

Download or read book The Collected Works of Witness Lee 1957 volume 1 written by Witness Lee and published by Living Stream Ministry. This book was released on with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the available records, Brother Witness Lee ministered in the Philippines until near the end of January 1957. After Brother Lee returned to Taipei, Taiwan, Brother T. Austin-Sparks visited Taiwan in February for the second time (his first visit was in 1955). After visiting Taiwan, Austin-Sparks went to Hong Kong in March for a short visit. Brother Lee accompanied him during the entire time. The result of these visits caused much confusion concerning the practice of the church, in particular concerning the truth of the ground of the church. After Austin-Sparks left the Far East, Brother Lee spent about six months in Taiwan, where he conducted conferences and trainings on the truth concerning the church. Near the end of September he went to the Philippines and spent about a month there. At the end of October he traveled to Hong Kong again and stayed until the end of December, conducting various conferences and fellowships, many of which were to clarify the confusion concerning the truth of the church. In January 1958 he again visited the Philippines and remained there about a month before returning to Taipei via Hong Kong. In the 1957 set, volume 1 comprises Brother Lee's messages and personal notes given during his travels in Taiwan and throughout Southeast Asia, including fellowship and messages given during the visit of T. Austin-Sparks to Taiwan and Hong Kong in February and March. Volume 2 continues with Brother Lee's speaking in Taiwan on topics related to the church. Volume 3 is composed of his speaking in Manila, Philippines, and in Hong Kong from the end of September through December. The Collected Works of Witness Lee, 1957, volume 1, contains messages given by Brother Witness Lee in January 1957 through January 1958. Historical information concerning Brother Lee's travels and the content of his ministry in 1957 can be found in the general preface that appears at the beginning of this volume. The contents of this volume are divided into ten sections, as follows: 1. Eighty-seven personal notes written by Brother Lee during his travels in the Philippines, Taiwan, and Hong Kong from January 1957 through January 1958. These notes are divided into seven chapters and are included in this volume under the title Witness Lee's Personal Notes. 2. Seven messages given in 1957. The place and time of the speaking of the first three messages are unknown. The last four messages were spoken in Taipei, Taiwan, in January 1957. These messages were originally published in The Ministry of the Word in February through August 1957 and were previously published in a book entitled God's Need and God's Goal. They are included in this volume under the same title. 3. Eight messages and private talks given in Taiwan and Hong Kong in February and March 1957. These messages and talks are included in this volume under the title Fellowship Given during the Visit of T. Austin-Sparks. 4. Two messages given in Hong Kong on March 31 and April 4, 1957. These messages are included in this volume under the title Messages Given during the Visit of T. Austin-Sparks. 5. A letter written probably in Taiwan on April 25, 1957. This letter is included in this volume under the title A Letter concerning the Ground of the Church. 6. An article written in 1957 and published in the periodical The Ministry of the Word. This article is included in this volume under the title The Ministry of the Word, Miscellaneous Messages, 1957. 7. Five messages given in 1957. The place and time of the first three messages are unknown. The last two messages were given in Taipei, Taiwan, in April. The five messages were published in 1957 in the periodical The Ministry of the Word and were also published in a book entitled God's Plan concerning the Church. Book The Politics of the Encounter

Download or read book The Politics of the Encounter written by Andy Merrifield and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Politics of the Encounter is a spirited interrogation of the city as a site of both theoretical inquiry and global social struggle. The city, writes Andy Merrifield, remains "important, virtually and materially, for progressive politics." And yet, he notes, more than forty years have passed since Henri Lefebvre advanced the powerful ideas that still undergird much of our thinking about urbanization and urban society. Merrifield rethinks the city in light of the vast changes to our planet since 1970, when Lefebvre's seminal Urban Revolution was first published. At the same time, he expands on Lefebvre's notion of "the right to the city," which was first conceived in the wake of the 1968 student uprising in Paris. We need to think less of cities as "entities with borders and clear demarcations between what's inside and what's outside" and emphasize instead the effects of "planetary urbanization," a concept of Lefebvre's that Merrifield makes relevant for the ways we now experience the urban. The city—from Tahrir Square to Occupy Wall Street—seems to be the critical zone in which a new social protest is unfolding, yet dissenters' aspirations are transcending the scale of the city physically and philosophically. Consequently, we must shift our perspective from "the right to the city" to "the politics of the encounter," says Merrifield. We must ask how revolutionary crowds form, where they draw their energies from, what kind of spaces they occur in—and what kind of new spaces they produce.

Book Architecture and Sacrament

Download or read book Architecture and Sacrament written by David Wang and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-03-25 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Wang’s Architecture and Sacrament considers architectural theory from a Christian theological perspective, specifically, the analogy of being (analogia entis). The book tracks social and cultural reasons why the theological literature tends to be separate from contemporary architecture theory. Wang argues that retrieval of the sacramental outlook embedded within the analogy of being, which informed centuries of art and architecture in the West, can shed light on current architectural issues such as "big box stores," the environmental crisis and the loss of sense of community. The book critiques the materialist basis of current architectural discourse, subsumed largely under the banner of critical theory. This volume on how European ideas inform architectural theory complements Wang’s previous book, A Philosophy of Chinese Architecture: Past, Present, Future, and will appeal to architecture students and academics, as well as those grappling with the philosophical moorings of all built environments.
