Perfect for fans of Tomi Adeyemi, Leigh Bardugo, and V. E. Schwab. To Finn Voy, magic is two things: a knife to hold under the chin of anyone who crosses her…and a disguise she shrugs on as easily as others pull on cloaks. As a talented faceshifter, it’s been years since Finn has seen her own face, and that’s exactly how she likes it. But when Finn gets caught by a powerful mobster, she’s forced into an impossible mission: steal a legendary treasure from Castallan’s royal palace or be stripped of her magic forever. After the murder of his older brother, Prince Alfehr is first in line for the Castallan throne. But Alfie can’t help but feel that he will never live up to his brother’s legacy. Riddled with grief, Alfie is obsessed with finding a way to bring his brother back, even if it means dabbling in forbidden magic. But when Finn and Alfie’s fates collide, they accidentally unlock a terrible, ancient power—which, if not contained, will devour the world. And with Castallan’s fate in their hands, Alfie and Finn must race to vanquish what they have unleashed, even if it means facing the deepest darkness in their pasts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coreveth was a beautiful country and home to a variety of nonhuman creatures: elves, ogres, dwarves, and the like. Until one day, four human fishermen stumbled upon it and turned that world upside down. They brought into the country more of their kind by the shiploads and built four kingdoms, appointing each a human king. After a few generations and two wars, the nonhumans found themselves forced out from the kingdoms they helped to build and unwelcome even in the country they had called home for as far back as they could remember. Now King Richard, the leader of the purge of nonhumans from the kingdoms and the ruler of Kodia, sends his son, Prince Piers, to wed the princess of Oniraron and unite the kingdoms in his attempt to gain power and rule over the country. As the prince travels with his fiancée, his best friend and also the general to the Kodian army, the strongest of the country’s spellcasters, and a lawless forest dweller, he discovers the damage the purge has caused, how much control his father already has over the weaker kingdoms, and how their people suffer. The people find hope in the charming words of the benevolent prince and in his promises to save them from his father’s tyranny. But are there darker intentions hidden behind his kind eyes? Could he be just as sinister as his father? While there are those who vie for power, some are learning not to judge those around them by the positions they hold or the name of their breed. After all, life is not a fairy tale, and the heroes do not always so boldly wear their crowns. But most importantly... Not everything is what it seems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The set of Jewish mystical teachings known as Kabbalah are often imagined as timeless texts, teachings that have been passed down through the millennia. Yet, as this groundbreaking new study shows, Kabbalah flourished in a specific time and place, emerging in response to the social prejudices that Jews faced. Hartley Lachter, a scholar of religion studies, transports us to medieval Spain, a place where anti-Semitic propaganda was on the rise and Jewish political power was on the wane. Kabbalistic Revolution proposes that, given this context, Kabbalah must be understood as a radically empowering political discourse. While the era’s Christian preachers claimed that Jews were blind to the true meaning of scripture and had been abandoned by God, the Kabbalists countered with a doctrine that granted Jews a uniquely privileged relationship with God. Lachter demonstrates how Kabbalah envisioned this increasingly marginalized group at the center of the universe, their mystical practices serving to maintain the harmony of the divine world. For students of Jewish mysticism, Kabbalistic Revolution provides a new approach to the development of medieval Kabbalah. Yet the book’s central questions should appeal to anyone with an interest in the relationships between religious discourses, political struggles, and ethnic pride.

Book Kabbalah

    Book Details:
  • Author : Shahar Arzy
  • Publisher : Yale University Press
  • Release : 2015-06-30
  • ISBN : 030015237X
  • Pages : 217 pages

Download or read book Kabbalah written by Shahar Arzy and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this original study, Moshe Idel, an eminent scholar of Jewish mysticism and thought, and the cognitive neuroscientist and neurologist Shahar Arzy combine their considerable expertise to explore the mysteries of the Kabbalah from an entirely new perspective: that of the human brain. In lieu of the theological, sociological, and psychoanalytic approaches that have generally dominated the study of ecstatic mystical experiences, the authors endeavor to decode the brain mechanisms underlying these phenomena. Arzy and Idel analyze first-person descriptions to explore the Kabbalistic techniques employed by most prominent Jewish mystics to effect bodily reduplications, dissociations, and other phenomena, and compare them with recent neurological observations and modern-day laboratory experiments. The resultant study offers readers a scientific, more brain-based understanding of how ecstatic Kabbalists achieved their most precious mystical experiences. The study further demonstrates how these Kabbalists have long functioned as pioneering investigators of the human self.

They keep the balance of nature and guard the borders of our world, but don’t make the mistake of crossing one of them… The only thing more fiery than Bella Young’s red hair is her temper. She knows that a Baba Yaga’s power without strict control can leave the people she cares about burned, so to protect her heart—and everyone around her—the only company she keeps is her dragon-turned-Norwegian-Forest-cat, Koshka. But when Bella is tasked with discovering who’s setting magical fires throughout Wyoming’s Black Hills, she finds herself working closely with former hotshots firefighter Sam Corbett—and falling hard for his quiet strength and charm. Sam may bear the scars of his past, but Bella can see beyond them and would do anything to help him heal. Only before she can rescue her Prince Charming, she’ll have to overcome the mysterious foe setting the forest fires—a truly wicked witch who wields as much power and even more anger than Bella...

Book Hasidism

  • Author : Marcin Wodzinski
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2018-06-01
  • ISBN : 0190631279
  • Pages : 352 pages

Download or read book Hasidism written by Marcin Wodzinski and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hasidism is one of the most important religious and social movements to have developed in Eastern Europe, and the most significant phenomenon in the religious, social and cultural life of the Jewish population in Eastern Europe from the eighteenth century up to the present day. Innovative and multidisciplinary in its approach, Hasidism: Key Questions discusses the most cardinal features of any social or religious movement: definition, gender, leadership, demographic size, geography, economy, and decline. This is the first attempt to respond those central questions in one book. Recognizing the major limitations of the existing research on Hasidism, Marcin Wodzinski's Hasidism offers four important corrections. First, it offers anti-elitist corrective attempting to investigate Hasidism beyond its leaders into the masses of the rank-and-file followers. Second, it introduces new types of sources, rarely or never used in research on Hasidism, including archival documents, Jewish memorial books, petitionary notes, quantitative and visual materials. Third, it covers the whole classic period of Hasidism from its institutional maturation at the end of the eighteenth century to its major crisis and decline in wake of the First World War. Finally, instead of focusing on intellectual history, the book offers a multi-disciplinary approach with the modern methodologies of the corresponding disciplines: sociology and anthropology of religion, demography, historical geography and more. By combining some oldest, central questions with radically new sources, perspectives, and methodologies, Hasidism: Key Questions will provide a radically new look at many central issues in historiography of Hasidism, one of the most important religious movements of modern Eastern Europe.
