Book excerpt: Solutions of stannous fluoride, solutions of stannous hexafluorozirconate, and solutions of stannous fluoride plus zirconium fluoride were compared as to their ability to reduce enamel solubility. All solutions were so prepared as to contain tin in amounts equal to solutions having 10%, 0.5%, and 0.1% stannous fluoride. Solutions of stannous hexafluorozirconate were significantly more effective than those of stannous fluoride containing equivalent tin. The performance of these stannous hexafluorozirconate solutions was not, however, different from that of solutions prepared by separate additions of identical amounts of stannous fluoride and zirconium fluoride. Thus, combining these two components into a single compound does not increase the protective potential above that provided by the separate compounds. The 16% and 24% concentrations of stannous hexafluorozirconate employed in a recent clinical study may be much higher than required. Equivalent reduction of enamel solubility resulted with solutions containing approximately 1/20 of these levels. (Author).

Performance was measured by the amount of phosphorus removed from enamel before and after fluoride treatment. Phosphorus was determined automatically on the AutoAnalyzer. SnF2 solutions of 5.0, 10.0, and 20.0 percent concentration were significantly more effective than 0.4, 0.7, and 1.0 percent solutions. Aqueous preparations of stannous fluoride maintained their protective potency throughout the 12-week experimental period.

Book excerpt: The in vitro effectiveness of an aqueous stannous fluoride (approximately 20 percent) prophylaxis paste was determined by measuring the amount of phosphorous removed from enamel surfaces both before and after treatment with the paste. Treatment reduced enamel solubility by over 90 percent in all experimental groups, and there was no loss of effectiveness when the paste was aged over an 8-week period. The substitution of liquid petrolatum, or silicone and petrolatum in combination, for water, did not increase effectiveness.
